Happiness at Christmas Time

It was that time of the year again: bright lights, gifts, snow and carols (Ë̸è). It was Christmas. Since my younger days, Christmas has been a time of happiness and surprise. Being in the US hasn¡¯t changed much. The holiday itself matters to everyone here, even if they are not religious (óÆÐÅ×ڽ̵Ä).

There were some religious events. For us it was lessons and Carols, the yearly event in which the whole school listens to readings from religious books and Christmas songs. Since the event is formal, there is a dress rule. This year, for example, I looked through my whole locker to find a black dress suitable for the event. The event was very pleasant. The choir (ºÏ³ªÍÅ) sang the carols beautifully, the organ (·çÇÙ) was played beautifully and we got to sing some Christmas songs ourselves. Lessons and Carols has been an important part of Groton¡¯s traditions for many years. Even for townspeople, it has always been a must during this season.

Another thing that brings me surprise and joy is the tradition of Secret Santa. This year, each person in the dorm had to give three gifts and receive three. My Secret Santa was very kind to me: I got cookies, a fantastic drawing and the warmest scarf. I tried very hard to guess who my Secret Santa was, but she hid herself well until the last minute when everyone announced who they had bought gifts for in the gift-exchanging event. It was so much fun!

Besides all the happiness Christmas brought me in the US, I was also given a prize: a Christmas break, which meant that I could go home. On the plane back to China, I began thinking about my past year. It was a good year except my struggles. It was my first whole year abroad, and I was shaped into a better person ¨Cthat was the Christmas present I gave myself.

Have you ever wondered how and why a fall leaf changes color? We first have to understand what leaves are and what they do.

Plants are the world¡¯s food factories. Plants take water from the ground and take CO2 from the air. Plants use sunlight to turn water and CO2 into glucose(ÆÏÌÑÌÇ). Glucose is a kind of sugar. Using it as food, plants get energy and grow. Plants using sunlight to turn water and CO2 into sugar is called photosynthesis(¹âºÏ×÷ÓÃ). ChlorophyII helps photosynthesis. It gives plants their green color.

As summer ends and autumn comes, the days get shorter and shorter, and trees £¢know£¢ to begin getting ready for winter. During winter, there is not enough light or water for photosynthesis. Trees rest during this time and live on the food they store during the summer. They begin to shut down their food ¡ª making factories. As the green chlorophyII disappears from the leaves, we begin to see yellow and orange leaves. These colors have been in the leaves all the time. We just can¡¯t see them in the summer, because they are covered up by the green chlorophyII.

The bright reds and purples we see in leaves are made mostly in autumn. In some trees, glucose is caught in the leaves after photosynthesis stops. Sunlight and the cool nights of autumn turn this glucose into a red color. The brown color of trees is made from waste left in the leaves. It is mixture(»ìºÏÎï) of all these things. It makes the beautiful leaves during autumn.

My family lives very happily on a farm near a small town. My father always learns some information about weather through the TV, the Internet and newspapers.

One evening, he asked us to meet at the table after dinner. "I have some bad news," he said. "The weather reports on the television warned(¾¯¸æ)that we would face a typhoon tomorrow."

At 6.30 a.m. the next day, the winds started and the rain was falling heavily. There were new warnings that the sea level could go up as much as 5 meters.

The winds were terribly strong and tree branches were flying everywhere. Trees were falling down and the rain kept coming down.

Just after 10:30, the wind stopped suddenly-it was strangely calm and the sun was shining. Then the winds came howling(ÅØÏø)again, but this time more rain fell. There were more flying things and the storm came in. Everything within 1 km of the coast was flooded-there was fish in the streets. Now the winds were dying down, but the rain was still falling.

After another two hours, the wind came to a stop at last. My home was in a mess and my mum burnt her arm when the hot water from the stove hit her skin. We were all frightened, but we were all safe, including the cat.
