The great US writer, J. D. Salinger was one of the most influential writers of the last century. His writing interests all age groups, but young people are especially big fans of his.
He is famous for his novel The Catcher in the Rye. The hero of this story is named Holden Caulfield. Holden is a troublemaker at school and has difficulty getting along with others.
And yet Holden has a heart of gold. Many readers have been moved by the attitude (态度) he has toward young children, especially to his little sister Phoebe. He always tries his best to protect the young. Millions of people all over the world have taken the troubled 17-year-old Holden into their hearts.
In fact, Salinger didn't write all that much over the course of his life. Besides The Catcher in the Rye, he published (出版) a few other shorter works, and then, after 1965, nothing at all. The reason for this seems to be that he hated public attention. He had become famous with the success of his novel and didn't care about what people thought of him. Misadventure in English
Last week, our forum ( 论 坛 ) asked if you had any funny or strange stories about using English. Here are some of our favourite posts.
Sophie | When I first visited New York, I went to a shopping centre. I asked a lady where the shoes were. She said they were on the first floor. I went upstairs. But I couldn’t find any. I thought she gave me the wrong information. Then, I realized that the first floor was the ground floor. 128 |
Yancy | I went to a summer school in Manchester. One day, the head master told us that our English teacher Maggie couldn’t teach that day because she had a frog in her throat. Why did she eat a frog? Then I learned that it means someone’s throat is dry or blocked. How funny! 135 |
Julien | My British penfriend once told me that his grandfather was “wicked (邪恶的)”. But when I met his grandfather, I liked him a lot. I found it very strange. Why did my friend use a bad word about such a nice man? Guess what? When speaking informally, “wicked” means “very nice”. 70 |
Zheng Xu | I was part of a student exchange programme between a school in England and one in China. I knew I had done a good job writing my first English paper. But my teacher gave me “Not bad!” Not bad? There weren’t any mistakes! Actually, British people use “not bad” when things are pretty good! I got a good comment! 85 |

You must think a computer is the best thing in the world, right? You must think it works at a super speed and can do everything? Well, it’s not! In fact, the brain is much more powerful than any super computer! Think about when a glass is just about to fall off the table. Your brain controls everything that you need to do to save that glass from falling. First your eyes check out what’s going on, then tell your brain, and your brain decides how quickly you need to react (反应), and then your muscles (肌肉) go into action. That is just from your brain. No computer could ever come close to that!
The brain weighs just 3 pounds, but it controls everything you do from thinking, learning, feeling even to breathing and your heart beating. Even though the brain is just 2% of your body weight, it uses around 20% of all your energy in your body. That is a lot for such a small organ (器官). There are about 100 billion tiny, tiny little cells in your brain. There are so many that it would take you over 3,000 years to count them all!
Your brain stops growing when you’re 18, but it actually keeps on developing and learning new things. So your parents are really super smart! You won’t be able to fool them! Believe it or not, your brain NEVER stops working. Even during sleeping, the brain works for long-term memory establishment (建立). It is realized that the brain is the second organ in the body as the heart that never stops during human lives.
So everyone should be proud of such a gift of nature.
