The Palace Museum,known as the Forbidden City(紫禁城),stands in the center of Beijing and was the home of China's emperors for over 500years.The last emperor to live there was Puyi.While the emperors ruled,no commoners(平民)or foreigners were allowed to enter the grounds without special permission.
The Forbidden City was built between 1406and 1420.The palace grounds cover an area of 720,000square meters.And it has a six?meter?deep moat(护城河) and ten?meter?high walls around it.These walls were built high and strong to protect the Forbidden City.There are gardens and a few lakes around it.
The Forbidden City has 800buildings and 9999rooms.You can see some of the best features of Chinese architecture(建筑风格).The beautiful palaces and buildings are now used as public museums,and nobody lives in it now.Today it remains a symbol of Chinese sovereignty(君权).
