【题目】 Plastic can be found almost in everything. That includes toys, cars and computers. Most plastic cans should be recycled. However, many types of plastic are often thrown away. Much of the plastic rubbish ends up in the ocean. It gets there mainly from litter on land and over-flowing sewers (下水道).The rest is thrown directly into the seas. It's reported that about 8 million tons of plastic flows into the seas each year. That's equal to a garbage truck full of plastic every minute. Plastic can not fully break down, so once it reaches the ocean it will float on the sea or sink into the bottom and then it may kill the wildlife.

In response to this problem, the United Nations (U.N.) hosted its first-ever Ocean Conference. At the conference, the UN’s 193 member nations reached an agreement. They agreed to try their best to protect the ocean from pollution. "The sea has a special relationship with all of us in the world, but the relationship is under threat now," said Antonio Guterres, the secretary-general of the UN.

Countries in Asia have agreed to take some measures. The promise from China, Thailand, and Indonesia is hopeful. They produce up to 60% of all marine plastic waste-because of leakage (泄露) from underdeveloped garbage-collection facilities.

Good news is that some scientists and companies worldwide are developing ways to keep plastic out of the ocean. They are trying to remove it and recycle it. For example, the Dell, a computer company, is creating laptop packaging (包装) from recycled plastic rubbish.

Dell predicts that the project will prevent 16,000 pounds of plastic from entering the ocean.“We hope to encourage more companies to do something for the growing environmental issue," Carly Tatum says, who is a Dell spokeswoman.

However, environmentalists are not so optimistic. They warn that there is no quick way to prevent plastic pollution. Maybe the real solution is that every country in the world should make stronger laws on the plastic pollution.

【题目】 When we want to find out what the weather will be like tomorrow, we usually turn on the radio or TV. But in the time before radio and TV, people needed to forecast (预测) the weather. How did they do it? Let’s learn about two weather rhymes (押韵的诗) together.

Red sky at night, Sailor’s delight!

Red sky in the morning, Sailors take warning!

This weather rhyme was written a long time ago, but it still works today. As the sun is setting, a red sky at night usually means there are no clouds coming in from the west, a sign of good weather for tomorrow. But a red sky in the morning always means drier air is moving away to the east and moister air is moving in from the west. The moist air could bring clouds, rain and stormy weather.

When leaves show their undersides (底部), Be very certain, rain betides.

The rhyme shows us how trees forecast the weather. Tree leaves turn upside down just before it rains. In the period before a storm, strong winds can lift the leaves and show their undersides.

Animals, insects and plants are natural forecasters. When a summer storm is coming, you may notice that dogs, cows, horses, and geese grow restless (不安的) and frogs come out of their hiding places. These animals don’t have some sixth sense. Scientists think the animals can hear the low frequency (频率) sound waves made by thunderstorms many miles away.

Get outside and observe nature carefully, and soon you’ll be your own weather forecaster.

1The underlined word “moist” can be replaced by the word “________”.

A.wetB.ColdC.warmD.clean

2What is helpful for some animals to forecast the stormy weather?

A.Their sense of sight.B.Their sense of hearing.

C.Their sense of smell.D.Their sense of touching.

3Which of the following is TRUE?

A.The two rhymes are both about winter weather.

B.When leaves show their undersides, it will be fine.

C.If you see a red sky in the morning, you can travel outside.

D.If you see a frog come out of its hiding place, you’d better stay at home.

4What’s the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?

A.To introduce two famous weather rhymes to us.

B.To tell us we should read as many rhymes as possible.

C.To show us the way to observe different animals.

D.To encourage us to get close to nature and observe the weather on our own.

【题目】 There's much to see under the sea , but you need to remember that light behaves differently in water than in air . The objects appear closer to you than they exactly are . You might find yourself reaching out to touch something and completely missing it.

Objects under water will appear larger than they would on surface , too . Be careful not to tell any stories about the big fish that got away. That fish might not be so big after all ! It's just because sometimes things can seem to be as much as about 33 percent bigger in water!

What's more , in deeper water , colors just don't seem as bright . In fact , it looks as if some colors are missing . Remember the color of an object results from the wavelengths of light that are reflected from its surface . And light is taken in as it moves down through the water.

Swimmers wear wet suits to keep warm underwater . Let's take a bright red, yellow , and blue wet suit as an example . These colors are hard to miss on the surface of water.Watch carefully the changes in color as you descend in the water . The red part now looks almost black because the red light wavelengths , the longest among these three colors , are missing . As you go down deeper, the same thing will happen to the yellow part and in the end to the blue part . Even at a place about 6 to 9 meters underwater , you will look terrible, like a ghost! And you have to wait for your return to the surface to enjoy the bright colors again !

根据材料内容选择最佳答案。

A.the sizeB.the weightC.the positionD.the color

3The underlined word " descend " probably means________in Chinese in this passage .

4Which of the following is true ?

A.A four-meter-long fish looks three meters long underwater

B.The wavelengths of red light are longer than those of blue light

C.Much water will be taken in by the swimmer deep in the water

5The best title of this passage is________.

【题目】 Research proves that nearly half of the cancers diagnosed(诊断) in the UK each year—over 130,000 in total— are caused by life choices that include smoking, drinking and eating the wrong things.

Tobacco(烟草) is the biggest factor, causing 23% for cases in men and 15.6% in women, says the Cancer Research UK report. Next comes a lack of fresh fruit and vegetables in men’s diets, while for women it is being overweight. Lead author of the report, Professor Max Parkin, said: “Many people believe cancer is related to fate(命运) or ‘in the genes(基因)’, and that it depends on luck whether they get it or not. Looking at all the evidence, it is clear that around 40% of all cancers are caused by things we mostly have the power to change.”

For men, the best advice appears to be: stop smoking, eat more fruit and vegetables and cut down on how much alcohol you drink. For women, again, the best advice is to stop smoking, but also watch your weight.

In total, 14 lifestyle and environmental factors, such as where you live and the job you do, cause 134,000 cancers in the UK each year.

Some risk factors are well founded, such as smoking’s link with lung() cancer. But others are less well realized. For stomach cancer, a fifth of the risk comes from having too much salt in the diet, data suggests. Some cancers, like mouth and throat cancer, are caused almost mainly by lifestyle choices. But others, like gall bladder cancer(胆囊癌), are largely not related to lifestyle.

Public Health Minister, Anne Milton, said: “By making small changes you can cut your risk of serious health problems—giving up smoking, watching you drink, getting more exercise and keeping an eye on your weight.”

1The underlined word “it” in the second paragraph refer to________.

A.changeB.lifestyleC.cancerD.weight

2According to Professor Parkin, he thinks that________.

A.cancers are caused because of genes

B.some cancers may be avoided mainly

C.most cancers are caused for no reason

D.men can keep an eye on their weight to avoid cancers

3According to this passage, stomach cancer can be brought on by________.

A.working overtimeB.taking in too much salt

C.lack of exerciseD.smoking too much

4Which of the following can be learnt from the passage?

A.Smoking is the only cause of lung cancer.

B.Drinking a small amount of wine is good for health.

C.Some cancers may not be caused by lifestyle choices.

D.About 134,000 people die of cancer in the UK each year.
