    One day, Mr Read and his son Robert were going out for a walk. He put on a pair of shoes together with a pair of different socks, one white and one yellow. As he came out of his house, his son noticed the colors of his father’s socks and said, “You’ve put on two different socks, Dad.” When he heard this, he looked at his socks and found that his son was right. He was happy and said to himself, “What a clever son I have got!” Then he asked his son to go back to the house to get another pair of socks for him. When the son went back to his house, all he could find was one white sock and one yellow sock. Robert then took the socks to his father and said, “It’s no use changing. These socks at home are also different, one yellow and one white.” Mr Read agreed with his son and they went out for a walk.

    As a child, I was really afraid of the dark and of getting lost. These fears were very real and caused me some uncomfortable moments.
    Maybe it was the strange way things looked and sounded
    in my own room at night that scared me so much. There was
    never complete darkness, but always a streetlight or passing
    car lights, which made clothes on the back of a chair take on
    the shape of a wild animal. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw
    the curtains(窗帘) seem to move when there was no wind. A
    very low sound in the floor would seem a hundred times       
     
    louder than in the day. My imagination (想象) would run wild, and my heart would beat fast. I would lie very still so that the "enemy(敌人) " would not discover me.
    Another of my childhood fears was that I would get lost, especially on the way home from school. Every morning I got on the school bus right near my home. That was no problem. After school, though, when all the buses were lined up along the street, I was afraid that I would get in the wrong one and be taken to some other strange places. On school or family trips to a park or a museum, I wouldn’t let the leaders out of my sight.
    Perhaps one of the worst fears of all I had as a child was that of not being liked or accepted by others. Being popular was so important to me then, and the fear of not being liked was a serious one.
    One of the processes(过程) growing up is being able to realize and overcome our fears. Understanding the things that scared us as children helps us achieve greater success later in life.

    There are many unusual hotels around the world. In Greenland(格陵兰岛), there is a hotel made of ice, open between December and April every year. In Turkey(土耳其), there is a cave(岩洞) hotel with a television, furniture, and a bathroom in each room. And in Bolivia(玻利维亚), there is a hotel named the Salt Palace Hotel.
    Thousands of years ago, the area around the Salt Palace Hotel was a large lake. But today, the area has only two small lakes and two salt deserts(荒漠).
    The larger of the two deserts is called Uyuni salt desert. During the day, the desert is bright white because of the salt. There are no roads across the Uyuni desert, so local people must show guests the way to the hotel.
    In the early 1990s, a man named Juan Quesada built the hotel. He cut big blocks of salt from the desert and used the blocks to build it. Everything in the hotel is made of salt: the walls, the roof(屋顶), the tables, the chairs, the beds, and the hotel’s bar.
    The sun makes the walls and roof warm during the day. At night the desert is very cold, but the rooms are warm. The hotel has twelve rooms. A single room(单人间) costs＄40 a night, and a double room(双人间) costs＄60.
    A sign on the hotel’s wall tells guests, “ Please don’t lick（添）the walls.”
