Tom's father was a coward (胆小鬼) and not an honest man. He not only often told lies (谎话) but was also wanted his son to do so. One day Tom and Mike saw a man beat a boy. A policeman caught the man and brought him before a judge. Tom and Mike had to go, too, to tell the judge what had happened. Before Tom left home, his father said to him, “Be careful, son. You didn't see that man beat the boy, did you? Tell the judge you saw nothing. Remember we have to live in this village with that man.” But Tom was brave and honest. He did not obey his father. In the doctor's waiting-room, many patients were sitting quietly and waiting for their turns. Tom, a school boy, was sitting there, too. They all looked very sad except Tom. He was reading an interesting book, and there was a smile on his face.
Just then a doctor came in and said he was ready for the next patient. Tom jumped up and ran into the doctor's room.
“Good morning, Doctor.”
“Good morning. What's your trouble, young man?” asked the doctor. Before Tom could say a word, the doctor made him lie down on a bed. “Now, let me listen to your heart.” Tom tried to speak, but the doctor told him not to say anything. “I'll take your temperature.” Tom tried to sit up, but the doctor stopped him. “Now open your mouth …. Mm, good.” After a moment, the doctor said, “Well, my boy, there is nothing wrong with you.”
“I know there isn't,” said the boy. “I just came here to get some medicine for my father.”
