Americans love sports--they love to play them, to watch them on television, and to talk about them. But this hobby sometimes has serious results-- at least to the players. For example, when people play tennis, sometimes they hurt their elbows(Öⲿ) and in this way they develop "tennis elbow". Also it is easy to hurt a knee in a football game. These injuries happen while the player is having fun, but they still hurt.

A few months ago Kathleen Simmons, who loves playing volleyball, hurt her knee in a volleyball game. Her doctor told her that she needed a very difficult operation(ÊÖÊõ) or she might not be able to play again. She felt very sad and didn't know what to do.

Then Simmons learned about "video operation". Simmons found a hospital that was using this new science and went to see the doctor there. The doctors told her the operation could help.

For this operation, her doctor didn't have to open her knee. Instead he put a very small camera lens(¾µÍ·)inside her knee. The lens sent back pictures, which appeared on a television screen. As he worked, he could see the inside of her knee on the TV. With the help of the large pictures on the screen, the doctor knew exactly what to do when he was making the repairs.

Simmons started walking five days after her operation. Now, six months after her operation, Simmons can do everything she did before her injury. She can play volleyball again."

Mahalya Daye, 13, is an eighth-grader at Lamberton Middle School in Pennsylvania, USA. Every afternoon at nearly 2 o'clock, she runs to a store at her school. But she is not running to buy snacks. Instead, she works as the storekeeper.

¡°I didn't know that it took so much work. I've never really done something like this,¡± Mahalya said.

In fact, she is one of 12 volunteer staff members at Bison Bargains. It is the school's first store run (¾Óª) by students. It started on Feb. 22, and it opens each school day during break time from 2 to 2:30 p.m. It mainly sells stationery (Îľß) and snacks.

The school wants to provide the students with a real-life business experience through this. Christian Ilg, 14, an eighth-grader, was really surprised by how hard it was not to make mistakes and do the transactions (½»Ò×). ¡°It's kind of a challenge to learn all the information on the lists and remember all the prices of the products,¡± Christian said.

To learn about business, the students took a special class. They learnt how to use money and some simple business rules.

The school did a survey on what products students would buy from a school store. In the future, they plan to sell things made by the students themselves. For example, students can sell their homemade pencil boxes.
