Helen is a teenager who has growing problems. She posts her problems on her blog and gets a lot of advice from other bloggers.
Helen: My parents are annoying. They never stop going on about how I should keep my room tidy, keep my hair tidy and wear smart clothes. They even make me do the washing-up after dinner every night! None of my friends have got such parents. What should I do? |
Why do you think you're the only one with parents like that? All parents are the same. They want us to look like them. Sometimes it's really annoying. They don't understand that fashions have changed in the last 30 years! Tom, Canada Hi, Helen. I think you should do what your parents ask. They're much older than you and you should take their advice. It's their house you live in and their money you spend. Emily, New Zealand, Helen, why should your parents do all the washing-up? You should help around the house---it's only fair. Simon, Scotland I don't see why you are so unhappy. Your parents act like that because you are the one they love and care about. We share housework in my family. I even wash the car for my father. And I get paid for that. Victoria. Australia |

On a hot African morning, Leila was lying on her stomach and an elephant was walking towards her. Leila waited. Then she pushed the button on her camera. “And I got my best photo of an elephant ever, by lying under my car,” Leila explained. “I wanted to get close to the elephants, but of course this was dangerous; they had their babies with them. So every morning I used to park my car in the open near the path (小道). They used to take the same path every morning when they left the water hole. After a week, they were used to seeing my car. So the next morning, I lay under it and got my photo!”
Many of the best wildlife photos come from good planning. In Africa, photographers set up their hides (隐匿处) near water holes. They also set up hides near forest paths, as animals use the same paths every night. For bird-watching, many lakes have hides. Inside the hides, bird-watchers can watch all day in the shade (荫处) out of the wind and rain.
Good wildlife photos are needed for books, postcards, magazines and newspapers. But a success rate of 1 in 20 is good.

Do you get angry when your friends sing loudly? Or when your best friend does not wait for you after school?
If you do, you need to control(控制) your feelings and stop getting angry so easily. Getting angry easily can make you lose friends.
Gary Egeberg, an American high school teacher, wrote My Feelings are Just Like Wild Animals to help you control your feelings. It tells teens how to stay cool when bad things happen to them. The book says that getting angry only makes problems worse. It can not make them better. “Getting angry is not a natural way to act”, the book says. It is just a bad habit, like smoking. The book says you can control your anger easily, and all you have to do is to tell yourself not to be angry.
When a baby falls over, it cries only when people are watching it. Like a baby, you can only get angry if you are sure it is the right thing to do.
The book gives many suggestions to help you if you get angry easily. Here are the top three.
①Keep a record. Every time you get angry, write down why you are angry. Look at it later and you will see you get angry too easily.
②Ask your friends to stop talking to you when you get angry. This will teach you not to be angry.
③Do something different. When you get angry, walk away from the problem and go somewhere else. Try to laugh!

People show their personalities in their clothes, their cars and their homes. Because we might choose some foods to “tell” people something about us, our diets can also be an expression of our personalities. For example, some people eat mainly gourmet (供美食家享用的)foods, such as caviar (鱼子酱) and lobster (龙虾), and they eat only in expensive restaurants. They know about the “better things in life”.
People can eat many different kinds of foods, but some people choose not to eat meat. Vegetarians(素食主义者) often have more in common(相同) than just their diets. Their personalities might be the same too. For example, vegetarians in the US and Canada may be creative(创造性的) people, and they might not enjoy competitive(竞争性的) sports or jobs. They worry about the health of the world, and they are probably strongly opposed (反对的) to wars(战争).
Some people eat mostly fast food. One study shows that many fast-food eaters have a lot in common with one another, but they are very different from vegetarians. They are competitive and good at business. They are also usually in a hurry. Many fast-food eaters might not agree with this description(描述) of their personalities, but it is a common picture of them.
