High above the city, stood the statue (雕像) of the Happy Prince. He was covered all over with thin leaves of fine gold, for eyes he had two bright sapphires (蓝宝石), and a large red ruby (红宝石) on his clothes.
One day, a Swallow (燕子) arrived at the city and stayed between the feet of the Happy Prince. But just as he was putting his head under his wings a large drop of water fell on him. “What is the use of a statue if it cannot keep the rain off?” he said. Then he looked up and saw the eyes of the Happy Prince were filled with tears, and tears were running down his golden face. His face was so beautiful in the moonlight that the little Swallow was filled with pity.
“Who are you?” he said. “I am the Happy Prince.”
“Why are you weeping then?” asked the Swallow.
“When I was alive and had a human heart,” answered the statue, “I did not know what tears were, for I lived in a palace. In the daytime I played with my friends in the garden, and in the evening I danced in the Great Hall. Everyone called me the Happy Prince, and happy indeed I was. So I lived, and so I died. Should we allow modern buildings to be built next to older buildings in a historic area of a city? In order to answer this question, we must first examine whether people really want to preserve the historic feel of an area. Not all historical buildings are attractive. However, there may be other reasons for example, economic reasons—why they should be preserved. So, let us assume that historical buildings are both attractive and important to the majority of people. What should we do then if a new building is needed?
In my view, new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style. Indeed, there are many examples in my own home town of Tours where modern designs have been placed very successfully next to old buildings. As long as the building in question is pleasing and does not dominate (影响) its surroundings too much, it often improves the attractiveness of the area.
It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt the area they are in, but the same can be said of some old buildings too. Yet people still speak against new buildings in historic areas. I think this is simply because people are naturally conservative and do not like change.
Although we have to respect people’s feelings as fellow users of the buildings, I believe that it is the duty of the architect and planner to move things forward. If we always reproduced what was there before, we would all still be living in caves. Thus, I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something fresh and different, even though that might be the more risky choice.
1.Which of the following is TRUE according to the author?
A.We should reproduce the same old buildings.
B.Buildings should not dominate their surroundings.
C.Some old buildings have spoilt the area they are in.
D.No one understands why people speak against new buildings.
2.By “more things forward” in the last paragraph, the author probably means “__________”.
A.Destroy old buildings B.Put things in a different place
C.Choose new architectural styles D.Respect people’s feelings for historical buildings
3.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To explain why people dislike change.
B.To warm that we could end up living in caves.
C.To admit how new buildings have ruined their surroundings.
D.To argue that modern buildings can be built in historic areas.

There was once a captain who loved money so much that he cheated his sailors at the end of every trip and took their wages.
On the last day of one trip, the ship was in a small port. It was winter time, and the sea was very cold, so the captain said to his sailors, “If one of you stays in the water during the whole night, I will give him my ship. But if he comes out before the sun appears, I shall get his wages.”
The sailors had heard about the captain’s cheating, so they didn’t believe in him. But then one of them, who thought that he was cleverer than the captain, said that he would do it. He got into the water and stayed in it although it was very cold. When it was nearly morning, some fishermen lit a fire on the shore about half a mile away.
“You are cheating,” the captain said to the sailor, “The fire's warming you.”
“But it's half a mile away,” said the sailor. “A fire is fire,” answered the captain.
“Perhaps you think that you are clever because you have won my wages, but you can't cook a chicken,” said the sailor.
“I can,” answered the captain.
“If you cook this chicken,” said the sailor, “I shall work for you without wages for seven years, but if you can’t, you will give me your ship.”
The captain agreed, took the chicken and said, “Where's the fire?”
“There it is,” answered the sailors, “On the shore."
“‘A fire’s fire’, you said,” answered the sailor. “If it is enough to warm me in the water, it is enough to cook your chicken.”

C.by cheating them D.and said he would return the money soon
2.What could the sailor get if he stayed in the water during the whole night according to what the captain said?
A.His own wages. B.A chicken. C.The captain's ship. D.A fire.
3.The captain said that the fire was warming the sailor in the water because_____.
A.he didn't want to lose the bet
B.the sailor cheated him
C.the fire was close enough to warm the sailor
D.some fishermen wanted to help the sailor with the fire
4.What do you think of the sailor according to the story?
A.He was polite. B.He was rude. C.He was smart D.He was dishonest.
5.What do you infer (推断) about the end of the story?
A.The sailor worked for the captain for seven years without wages.
