The word advertising is used to bring new products and services to the attention of people. Since ancient time, advertising has been a very good way to help with the buying and selling of products. In the Middle Ages, businessmen asked “town criers” to read public messages aloud to introduce their products. Later,in the fifteenth century, pages uf advertisements (ads) could be printed easily and were either hung in public places or put in books.
By the end of the seventeenth century, when newspapers were beginning to be read by more people, printed materials became an important way to introduce new products and services to people. The London Gazette was the first newspaper to leave a place for advertising. This was so successful that by the end of the century several companies started businesses of making newspaper ads for others.
Advertising became popular quickly in the eighteenth century. Ad writers were starting to pay more attention to the design of the ad. Everything, from clothes to drinks, was introduced to people with clever ways such as words organized in eye - catching styles, the use of pretty pictures and expressions that are easy to remember. Near the end of the nineteenth century, companies that made ads came to be known as “advertising agencies (广告商).” The agencies developed new ways to get people to think of themselves as members of a group. During the twentieth century, advertising agencies tried their best to make consumerism (消费主义)as a way of life, making people to believe that they could be happy only if they bought the “right” products.
