Why do we need to throw less away? There are two reasons. One is that some resources (资源) are
nonrenewable (不可再生的). That means there is only a certain amount of that resource in the world.
One example of this is oil. When we use up all the oil in the world, there will be no more.
There is another reason for throwing less away. All of our trash has to be put somewhere. Often, it is
put into garbage dumps (垃圾场). Much of that trash will be there for hundreds of years. The dumps will
be filled up with all this trash.
There are three ways to cut down on trash.
One way is to recycle. When you recycle something, it means it is made into another shape and used
again. Old newspaper may become paper bags. A glass jar can be melted (熔化) and made into a bottle.
Another way to cut down on trash is to reuse things. You can wash and use again a bottle that can hold
mustard (芥末酱) or something else.
The third way to cut down on trash is to reduce the amount of trash you make, stop buying thing that
you don't need in the first place. That reduce the amount of the earth's resources that you use.
1. How many reasons do we need to throw less away?

One cool April 22 morning, people started the day as usual. Yet it was not a normal
day. What's so special about April 22? The answer is simple. It is Earth Day. People all
over the world celebrate this important day. The idea of having a special day to celebrate
Earth began in the 1960s. Life was very different then. Few people talked or even thought
about the environment. Most people had no idea how dirty our air and water were.
On April 22, 1970, twenty million (百万) Americans joined the first Earth Day activities. They showed that
people really did want to do something about the environment. Since then laws have been passed to protect the
air, water, land, and animals.
The vehicles such as cars and buses you ride in must pass tests to make sure they don't cause too much
pollution. Thanks to this law, cars today release (排放) about half as many bad chemicals as cars did back in
1970. As a result, the air we breathe is cleaner than it once was.
Rivers and lakes are also cleaner today than they were in the 1970s. It's a good thing because they needed
a lot of help. The Cuyahoga River in Ohio was so polluted that rubbish and oil on the river even caught fire!
Today, the river is cleaner. It no longer burns. It's healthy enough for birds, fish, and other animals.
Now the celebration has spread to other countries. More than 175 countries take part each year.
In 2007, people in China paid much attention to a big problem. People were throwing away 27 million plastic
bags a day! People had "Bye-Bye Throwaway Culture Week." They wanted everyone to see how polluted it was
to throw away so many plastic bags. In 2008, China passed new laws against them.
Every April 22, millions get together to clean and protect Earth. They also celebrate how far we have come.
Our job is to put this knowledge to work. You can help keep our planet healthy too!

Do you want to live a happier, less stressful (有压力的) life? Try laughing for no reason at all. That's
how thousands of people start their day at Laughter Clubs around the world-and many doctors now think
that having a good laugh might be one of the best ways to stay healthy.
The first Laughter Club was started in Mumbai, India, in 1995 by Dr Madan Kataria. "Young children
laugh about 300 times a day. Adults laugh between 7and 15 times a day," says Dr Kataria. "Everyone's
naturally good at laughing-it' s the universal language. We want people to feel happy with their lives." There
are now more than 500 Laughter Clubs in India and over 1, 300 worldwide.
Many doctors are also interested in the effects (效果) of laughter on our health. According to a 5-year
study at the UCLA School of Medicine in California, with laughing there is less stress in the body. Laughter
improves our health against illness by about 40%.
So, what happens at a Laughter Club? I went along to my nearest club in South London to find out. I was
quite nervous at the beginning of the class, to be honest-I wasn't interested in laughing with a group of strangers, and I was worried about looking stupid. Our laughter teacher told us to clap our hands and say"ho ho ho, ha
ha ha," while looking at each other. However, our bodies can' t tell the difference between fake laughter and
real laughter, so they still produce the same healthy effects.
Surprisingly, it works! After ten minutes everybody in the room was laughing for real and some people
just couldn't stop! At the end of the class I was surprised by how relaxed and comfortable I felt. So if you're
under stress, then start laughing. You might be very pleased with the results!
1. In which country was the first Laughter Club started?
A. Britain.
B. America.
C. Australia.
D. India.
2. How did the writer feel at the beginning of the class?
A. Surprised.
B. Pleased.
C. Nervous.
D. Stressful.
3. When did the people in the club begin to laugh for real?
A. After a few minutes.
B. After a few hours.
C. After a few seconds.
D. After a few days.
4. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. Fake laughter and real laughter are both good for health.
B. 40% of the people in Laughter Clubs are good friends.
C. Adults laugh more often than children in a day.
D. Laughing is the best way to prevent illness.
