Prom(毕业舞会) is the last and biggest dance of the school year in the US, usually only for junior or senior students. This one big night costs teens and parents a lot of money.
Girls buy dresses while boys rent tuxedos(燕尾服). Girls usually get their hair, makeup and nails done for this special dance, and boys may rent a car to drive to the event and buy their date flowers. All of this adds up to a lot of money—an average of over $900 in 2015.
And that’s not where it stops. It’s becoming more common for teens to ask their dates(舞伴) to go with them to the dance in a special and public way. Lately, people are calling it a promposal(高中舞会),or a prom proposal(求婚), because teens are putting almost as much hard work into it as a wedding proposal.
It is said that the average promposal costs about one third of the total cost of prom. Prom is a great chance to dress up, dance and have fun with friends. But there can also be a lot of added pressure for teens to look good and impress their friends, which may take away some of the fun.

When you wave to a friend, you are using body language. When you smile at someone you mean to be friendly. When you put one finger in front of your mouth, you mean “be quiet”. Yet, people in different countries may use different body languages.
Once an Englishman was in Italy. He could speak little Italian. One day while he was walking in the street, he felt hungry and went into a restaurant. When the waiter came, the Englishman opened his mouth, put his fingers into it and took them out again and moved his lips. In this way, he meant to say, “Bring me something to eat.” But the waiter brought him a lot of things to drink, first tea, then coffee and then milk, but no food.
The Englishman was sorry because he was not able to tell the waiter he was hungry. He was ready to leave the restaurant when another man came in. The man put his hands on his stomach, and this body language was good enough for the waiter. In a few minutes, the waiter brought him a large plate of bread and meat.
Finally the Englishman had his meal in the same way.

A recent report by the American Heart Association—an organization that encourages adults and kids to stay healthy—found that today’s kids are 15 percent less healthy than kids from years ago. What does that mean? Let’s say you’re a 12-year-old girl. You’re not a sports superstar, but you’re pretty good. Let’s say your mother was at the same kind of kid when she was at your age. Now imagine we could set up a mile race between you and your mother from 30 years ago. The study shows your mother would probably beat you in the race by 90 seconds. It was the same for boys. An average boy from 30 years ago would beat an average boy today.
The scientists who did the study think there are some reasons for the big fall in fitness. First, too many of today’s kids are overweight(超重的), which makes it harder for them to run fast. Second, kids today don’t get enough exercise. Doctors say kids should get at least 60 minutes of exercise a day. That’s why it is important for schools to have P.E. classes.
So what should kids do? If you don’t want your parents to think they are faster than you, don’t spend a lot of time playing video games, watching TV or movies. Instead, do things that will get you to move.

Some people think that chicken soup is good for a cold. Others believe that it is unhealthy to eat meat. The question is, are they right?
Here are some facts.
For centuries, people have believed that chicken soup helps to fight a cold. Now, doctors say it may be true. They think that chicken soup has something that stops a cold from getting worse. Heat from the soup can also make a person feel better.
Many people think that it is unhealthy to have meat. It is untrue that meat, especially red meat, has protein(蛋白质) that the body needs. A person who doesn’t eat meat can get enough protein and be healthy by eating tofu, eggs and some vegetables.
A study shows that tea is better than coffee. Tea has something that can protect your heart, fight cancer and make you less fat. Coffee does not do this.
Many people believe that bread and potatoes can easily make people fat. In fact, bread and potatoes do not have fat in them. But eating too much and no exercising can make people fat. Also, adding things like butter to them can raise the chance of becoming fat.

Should Shanghai bid for(申办) the Summer Olympics in 2028? Here are some people’s opinions.
Some people said, “The games will improve Shanghai’s global influence and the city is powerful and must try to become a platform(平台) for major international dialogues. Shanghai has succeeded in holding the World Expo in 2010 and the city can also hold a successful Summer Olympics.”
Others, however, are not sure whether it’s a good idea. They think the Olympics would be too expensive and the money could be better spent on other things.
The 2008 Beijing Olympics brought much prestige(声望) to the city and to China, but its cost, over $40 million, was high and the Olympic site(场地) in the center of the city is now largely unused. Could Shanghai learn from Beijing’s experience and do it better?

A primary school in US is grading (分级) parents on how much they support their children. Parents of pupils are marked from A to D based on their involvement(参与) with their children’s education.
To improve the children’s performance at school, the system encouraged their parents to attend events, such as parents’ evenings and plays, and help with learning at home. For many children at this school, it is making a huge difference. Children whose parents are in groups A and B make better progress than those whose parents are in groups C and D.
But not all parents are fond of being graded. “They’ll have us all wearing dunce’s (差生) hats next,” said a mother-of-one, who did not wish to be marked. She said that “It’s one thing when children get a bad grade, but now they openly embarrass their parents, too.” Another mother, who argued that the move had unfairly shifted responsibility from teachers to parents, said “Those parents who work from nine to five won’t have time to have as much input as stay-at-home mums who have the time to contribute more and go to more school events.”
But Pat Walker, 63, whose eight-year-old granddaughter attends the school, supported it.
She said, “I think it’s very beneficial(有好处) to the pupils and the parents and the grandparents as well.”

More and more people around the world are joining in dangerous sports. Some people climbed the highest mountains; some traveled into unknown parts of the world. Some sailed small boats across the largest sea. Now some people begin to look for new excitement.
Bungee jumping(蹦极) and motorcycle racing are quite dangerous sports. Bungee jumping only lasts for a few minutes or even seconds. You jump from a high place, about 200 meters above the ground, and there is a rubber band (橡胶带子) tied to your legs. When you jump down, the rubber band pulls you up. About 2,000,000 people around the world have tried bungee jumping.
Why do people join in these dangerous sports? Some scientists say that it is because modern life has become safe and it is not interesting. In the past, people lived in danger. They had to go out and look for food, and life was like a fight but was interesting.
Many people think that there is little excitement in life. They live and work in safe places, buy food in shops, and there are doctors and hospitals to look after them if they become ill.

The First Snow
The first snow last year was in October
I was so happy that it was so early
Small and white, virginal and bright
To woods and fields
Like the love from mother
The first snow of this year was on Christmas Day
It came a little later than before
But it still falls slowly and deeply in silent
To mountains and rivers
Like the love from father
A good beginning is half done
A timely and heavy snow promises a fruitful year
The fallen snow will turn into the spring mud
To a good harvest year quietly and generously
Like a silk worm or a candle
You can do what you can do
Few words but many deeds
You can help everyone that needs help
Bravely and gently with love
Like a wee snow star
