We moved away from my grandmother when I was eight years old. I missed her a lot. I was her favorite granddaughter and she was my favorite grandma.

Two years later my mother and father separated and soon divorced. I felt as if my world was falling apart. I lived with my mother for a time, next door to my grandma and grandpa in an apartment while my father was away during World War Ⅱ.

Grandma never had much in the way of money or material things. But it was the little things she gave me that let me feel warm, like letting me dip my fingers in the sugar bowl, letting me sip the coffee from her cup or allowing me to sit on the table as I had meals.

Though she didn’t have much, she did something for my brother and me. I will always remember she saved her coins in a glass jar. I thought my grandma could have used these coins herself, but she saved them to give us when we came to visit her.

We often face the following situations in our daily life:

? The woman next door plays her piano after 12 o’clock at night.

? The family across the street never cleans up their yard. The rubbish blows into your yard.

? The man next door always parks his car in front of your drive.

Have things like this ever happened to you? If so, you may ask yourself, “Who are these people? Why are they doing these things to me?”

These days, many people don’t know their neighbors. Sometimes we share a friendly smile or say hello, but lots of people don’t even know their neighbor’s names! When you don’t know someone, it’s easy to be angry when something has happened that you think is unfair. You think, “Maybe they like to make me angry, “or “Maybe they do it on purpose.” Believe it or not, your neighbors probably don’t mean to irritate(激怒)you. Often, they don’t even know that they’re making you feel angry. So before you take unusual steps to fix the problem, you should discuss it with them first.

When you move towards your neighbors, you should talk to them in a friendly manner. Praise their children to make them feel good. Then explain the situation. And if you can think of a simple way to solve the problem, suggest it.

If talking doesn’t work, ask another person to help. This person can listen to both sides of the story and help you and your neighbor solve the situation.

Finally, sometimes it’s a good idea to avoid the problem. Depending on the problem, it might be best to just stay out of your neighbor’s way.

1.What’s the writer’s purpose of writing paragraphs 1&2?

A. To ask some questions. B. To lead in the subjects.

C. To list some situations D. To tell some stories.

2.You should talk about the problem with your neighbors first because ________.

A. they often say hello or smile to you

B. you do not know what they are called

C. they probably don’t plan to make you unhappy

D. they will take unusual steps to solve the problem

3.When talking with your neighbors, you can make them have a good feeling by _______.

A. praising their children B. explaining the problem

C. shaking hands with them D. making friends with them

4.The best way to solve the problem sometimes is to ________.

A. ask another person for help B. turn a blind eye to it.

C. tell the story to your friend D. let your neighbor get out of the way

5.What does the passage mainly talk about?

A. Ways to deal with neighbors

B. Problems caused by neighbors

C. Situations we may face every day

D. Reasons why we become angry at neighbors

If you want a more interesting experience when you arrive in a new city or country, here are some better ways to travel, both for you and for the environment.

Way 1 Get out of the car and walk. It’s slower but it’s the greenest way to travel. It’s also the most rewarding(有益的)way to see a city, but remember to wear comfortable shoes.

Some also provide electric bikes that make it easier to go up hills and no longer journeys. Some cities also have mobikes, and you can pick up one easily. It’s not free but very cheap.

Way 3 If you have to take transport in a city, try to take public transport. Most cities now offer lots of information and very clear maps at the city’s website.

Have you ever been in a conflict(冲突)? Do you know how to solve it? Conflict resolution is a peaceful way of trying to solve a conflict. Both sides in the conflict explain what they think happened to cause it. The person who listens to both sides is called the mediator(调解人).

After both sides tell what they think happened to cause the conflict, they discuss ways to solve it. They try to come up with a “resolution” that both sides agree to. They cannot be angry during the communication. Everyone should use good listening and attending skills while talking. If voices get too loud or it appears that someone is angry, the mediator will speak up and have them treat each other with respect. After different suggestions are shared in how to mediate the conflict, it is time for

discussing the best solution(解决办法).

Here is an example of how conflict resolution works step by step in a school playground setting:

Someone says a student pushed him on the football field.

The person who was accused as the “pusher” says it was actually an accident.

The person who was pushed gets the mediator.

The mediator takes the two persons to a quieter place, away from others to talk.

The mediator calms them down and lets them know he understands their feelings.

Each person describes what happened.

The mediator repeats what he heard, so it is clear to everyone.

The mediator asks for ideas to solve the problem.

The two persons offer their own solutions.

The two persons have a discussion and come to an agreement.

The mediator makes sure the persons follow the solution.

The mediator offers praise for solving the problem.

Conflict resolution can be used in many environments. It encourages people to tell what really happened, to share their feelings, and to work together peacefully to solve the problem. It offers people workable steps to reach an agreement with the help of a mediator.

1.According to the passage, if two students have had a fight, they had better .

A. call the police B. get a mediator

C. ask parents for ideas D. describe the fight to teachers

2.In conflict resolution, the mediator’s job is to .

A. describe what really happened to both sides

B. help both sides reach an agreement in a proper way

C. listen to both sides and then punish the trouble maker

D. write down what both sides have explained in the communication

3.The underlined words “was accused” in this passage might mean “ ” in Chinese.

A. 被惩罚 B. 被轻视 C. 被指责 D. 被否定

4.The writer gives the example in the passage in order to .

A. show how a mediator works in a football match

B. help us know the importance of a mediator in daily life

C. show how conflict resolution is used in different environments

D. help us clearly understand the workable steps in conflict resolution

My best friend Jenny and I got to the mall for shopping. She held up a white sweater and matching skirt.“Do you like this?” she asked.

“It’s great,’’I said. Jenny nodded and continued looking while I moved about. touching the beautiful clothes. “I’ll try this on.” Jenny walked towards the dressing room. After a while, she came out in the outfit(一套衣服). She looked beautiful.

I sighed. Part of me wanted to say how good she looked. but another part stopped the words coming out. Jenny was in such good shape that she’d look good in the outfit. Sometimes. I regretted choosing a best friend who was so pretty. God, why can’t I be the one with the rich parents and the great look? More and more, I was envious(妒忌的)of her.

“Well, Teresa, what do you think?” Jenny asked more than once. “Do you like it?’’

The outfit looked great on her, but I lied, “Not really. I think you need something with more colors.’’

“You think so?" Jenny said doubtfully.

“Just believe me. We’ll find something better, "I told her, pushing her back into the dressing room. “You just can’t buy the first thing you see.” I did my best to get Jenny out of the store, away from that outfit. As we left, Jenny gave the sweater one last look.

Just down the mall, we passed a yogurt place. ‘‘My treat, ’’Jenny said, pulling out her wallet.

I could never say no to chocolate, so we got some and sat down at a table. As Jenny talked without stopping about a million things, I thought about my feelings toward her. Those feelings weren’t kind.

Sitting there, Jenny was attractive(吸引人的)not just because of her good luck, but more because of her kindness. Treating me to chocolate was far from her only show of generosity. She also let me drive her car and borrow her clothes.

Finishing our chocolate, we headed for the next clothing store. ‘‘Look at that red sweater.’’ Jenny said as we passed the window. ‘‘It would be perfect for you. Soon maybe you’ll have enough by saving your babysitting money to buy something like that.”

A few minutes earlier, all I had heard was about saving my babysitting money. I had hated the fact that Jenny could ask her parents for anything, and they’d buy it for her. This time, though. I heard more. I heard the voice of someone who loved and cared me for who I was. I needed to express the same to her.
