One day Peng Xianzhe learned he would go to the Mashan School in Guizhou. The 16-year-old boy tried to imagine how serious the drought was for the students at that school. However, he realized it was more serious than he had imagined when he saw the sign "DON’T wash clothes with water, or you will be punished(惩罚). "

Because of drought, the school has been short of water for a long time. Each student has only one bottle of water every day for washing and drinking. The drought has made the poor students much poorer.

Peng is a student from Beijing Chaoyang Foreign Language School. He took part in the school’s Rain & Bow Project from April 2 to 10.

The project idea came from Peng’s principal(负责人). One day, she heard a sad story about Li Guoxian, a poor girl in the Mashan School, who stopped going to school because of drought. The principal started this project to help the school. In one day, 3, 000 students made over 10, 000 donations of water, books and clothes.

Peng and other four students went to the Mashan School and gave the donations with five teachers. They visited poor families, made surveys and had classes at the school.

Ding Zhentao, 16, was worried about the school’s poor learning environment. "The blackboards and playground are too shabby to use,"Ding said. "Besides, there really aren’t enough teachers. A teacher has to teach both history and English, and even the cook is a class teacher. "

Although life isn’t easy, students at the school have a positive attitude(积极的态度)towards life and they are quite willing to learn. That’s what moved 16-year-old Chen Shi most.

"They sang their songs together as usual before class every afternoon. After class, the students asked us to tell them things about Beijing and our studies," Chen said. "You can see the passion(热情)in them. I believe it will make a difference. Their futures will be bright. "

A city without cars would be very strange, right? But Venice is such a city.

Venice is in the northeast of Italy. It wasn’t built on land, like Beijing or Shanghai, but on more than 110 islands. Seawater is everywhere around the city.

Even so, travel isn’t difficult. The waterways have always been the best ways to get around. There are 117 waterways and more than 400 bridges that can guide you where you want to go. People in Venice move from place to place by boat. They like to enjoy the scenery and cool summer nights while taking boat trips. They can talk to other people as they go along.

Venice grew out of small islands in saltwater lakes when some Italians escaped from a war more than 1,500 years ago, and built homes there.

Water makes the city special, but it is also a big problem.

Once, people used too much underground water. This made the city get lower little by little. Now the city has gone down by 23 centimeters. Another problem is the rising seawater. The temperature has risen over the years. This has made the ice of the Arctic Ocean (北冰洋)

melt (融化).

Every year, high waters hit the city in autumn and winter. When a lot of water comes, more than half of the city is underwater.

Scientists are trying different ways to stop the city from getting even lower.

A. In Italy. B. In Canada. C. In England. D. In America.

2.Which is the most impossible way for people in Venice to get around ?

3.Why is Venice still getting lower and lower?

A. Because too many people live there. B. Because the rising temperature has made the ice melt.

C. Because lots of bridges have been built. D. Because the underground water is rising.

4.What seasons are dangerous for Venice because of high waters?

A. Summer and autumn. B. Autumn and winter. C. Summer and winter. D. Spring and winter.

5.The passage is mainly about .

According to the World Happiness Report, people who live in Denmark (丹麦) are the happiest in the world. Why? Because they know the secret to happiness—“hygge”. But what is “hygge”?

The Danish (丹麦的) word “hygge” (pronounced “hoo?ga”) is often translated(翻译) in English as “coziness”. But coziness paints only part of the picture. It's also about spending peaceful time in a quiet environment with no calendar. It's about spending time alone or spending time with family.

Danish people are very good at “hygge”. For example, they create a “hygge” environment by burning candles in classrooms, kitchens, bedrooms, etc. According to some reports, Danish people burn more candles every year than people from any other European country.

However, “hygge” isn't just about creating a nice and warm environment; it is best enjoyed with family members and friends. With up to 17 hours of darkness every day in winter, Danish people spend more time indoors as a result, and they often get together for a meal or hot drinks, without the distraction(使人分心的事物) of technology or the stress of daily life.

Still can't understand what “hygge” is? If you're reading this in a comfortable chair, with a few candles around you, that sense of coziness you're feeling might just be “hygge”.

1.How do Danish people create a “hygge” environment?

A. By painting their houses.

B. By cleaning up bedrooms.

C. By burning candles.

D. By shopping alone.

2.With up to 17 hours of darkness every day in winter, Danish people________.

①play computer games till midnight

②spend more time indoors as a result

③stay up late to work in their own rooms

④often get together for a meal or hot drinks

A. ①② B. ②④

C. ①③ D. ③④

3.In the last paragraph, the word “coziness” means “________” in Chinese.

A. 舒适 B. 友善

C. 奢侈 D. 密切

4.The article mainly tells us________.

A. when Danish people like to stay at home

Lizzie-s diary from Antarctica (南极洲)

Day 3: Tuesday December 2

We planned to go to Rothera that morning. We’d be staying there for the next two weeks. Because Antarctica is the windiest place on earth, sometimes you can’t fly at all.

We had a nervous wait over breakfast to find out if we’d be leaving that day. People have to stay in Stanley for weeks while the pilots wait for good weather

It turned clear at 9:30 and we took off at 10:30 on a little red plane called a Dash-7. But even when we were in the air, there was still a chance we wouldn’t be able to fly the whole day.

Day 4: Wednesday December 3

After waking up in the Antarctic for the first time today I can understand why everybody who comes here falls in love with the place. It is really beautiful.

We’re staying at Rothera Survey base with mountains of ice all around. It s about minus 20C today, which for me is very cold, but the regulars(常客) here are often seen walking around in T-shirts !

Day 5: Thursday December 4

I woke up to another beautiful sunny day here in the Antarctic. I’m told it’s a bit colder today, about minus 50C , but it’s not very windy so it feels warmer. Those of us who are new to the bas have to do a spccial training course before we're allowed to go off base to other stations or to go snowboarding over the nearby hill.

Day 7: Saturday December 6

Not a cloud in the sky and it’s warm enough to sit outside (in a jacket).

The most amazing thing about this place is how the scenery (凤景) changes every day.

At first I thought I was going mad. I’d step outside in the morning and think, “I’m sure that big mountain of ice wasn’t there yesterday.” It’s because the sea ice is always moving—slowly thankfully !

1.Lizzie sat outside wearing a jacket on_______.

A. Tuesday B. Wednesday C. Thursday D. Saturday

2.What could stop Lizzie from leaving Stanley for Rothera?

A. Strong winds. B. Thick clouds.

C. Mountains of ice. D. Low temperatures.

3.How did Lizzie feel during her stay in the Antarctic?

A. Afraid. B. Nervous. C. Amazed. D. Bored.

4.What impressed Lizzie most about Rothera was that _______.

A. people walked around in T-shirts B. there was a special training course

C. the weather was sometimes warm D. the scenery changed every day
