During the last week of my sophomore year(大学二年级), Mom called me, hoping my summer break would be spent with grandma and grandpa. My grandparents were both in their seventies, and I knew they really needed the help around the farm.

So I packed my car after the final exam and started my life on the farm. As weeks passed, I gradually settled into a routine of daily work with Grandpa. In the evenings I usually read or talked with Grandma.

On the last Saturday in June, I went fishing with my grandfather. Unexpectedly, we saw one of the swans was dead by the pond. Grandpa had given the pair of swans to Grandma on their fiftieth anniversary. "Why don't we buy another one?" I suggested. Grandpa thought for a few moments and finally said, "no... it's not that easy, Bruce. You see, swans mate for life. There's nothing we can do for the one that's left. He has to work it out for himself." A few days later, we drove by the pond and found the other swan lying near the same place we had found the first one. It, too, was dead.

Then July 12 came. Grandma died suddenly that morning of a stroke( 中 风 ). My grandfather was obviously shaken when he heard the news.

The funeral was held the next day. On the second day after the funeral, Grandpa asked all the people to get back to their own lives. Grandpa was not a man who could outwardly express his grief around others, and we all worried about him.During the rest of the summer, we stayed busy working. I thought there was something different about Grandpa but couldn't tell exactly what it was.

September was nearing, I had to leave. As I drove down the driveway, he waved to me and then walked to the gate to start the morning livestock check. That's how I like to remember him.

Mom called me at school on a windy October day to tell me Grandpa had died. He died of a stroke, the same as Grandma.

3.What do you think is the most probable reason for Grandpa’s death?

A. He was sad about the swans’ death.

Many teachers believe that hands-on experiences are the best way to learn. A group of students in the United Sates is putting that belief to the test.

The students are from the Stevens Institute of Technology. They successfully designed and built a robot for discovering mines at the bottom of the sea. The underwater robot is called Perseus II. It costs about $15,000 to build. The students made the robot to answer a challenge from the U.S. Department of Defense(国防部).

The students use a video game controller to direct its movements. Devices known as

thrusters enable the robot to go up, down and toward its target in the water. Video cameras on the robot send images back to a computer through a 13-meter-long cable(电缆). Perseus II also has a set of lasers(激光), they are used to measure the size of an object.

The robot is the creation of five college students. They worked for over six months to design and build Perseus II.

"Their goal was to go down and find the mine and not only just find it but provide information to an expert on the surface so he or she could make a decision whether it was something dangerous or not before they removed it," Michael DeLorne said.

Perseus II was successfully tested in Florida with similar robots built at other engineering schools. In a separate development, new students at the Stevens Institute of Technology have already started on the next project. It is a flying vehicle they are calling Perseus III.

1.Why did the five college students make the robot?

A. To go up, down and toward its target underwater.

B. To provide information to an expert on the surface.

C. To answer a challenge from the Department of Defense.

D. To prove hands-on experiences is the best way to learn.

2.Which of the following is NOT part of Perseus II?

A. a set of lasers B. a computer

C. video cameras D. a video game controller

3..What does the word “mine” in Paragraph 5 most probably mean ?

A. 宝藏 B. 海鱼 C. 矿井 D. 水雷

4.What can we infer(推断) about Perseus III according to the passage?

A. Perseus III may be used in the sky.

B. Perseus III has been successfully tested in Florida.

C. Perseus III will cost more money and time.

D. Perseus III and Perseus II are made by the same students.

Researchers from two universities at Chicago discovered 550 children, ages three to six, to learn about how money affects children. The result proved money makes children work harder, but it also makes them less giving.

To avoid raising a selfish generation, parents should talk to their children about money in the following ways according to the Money Advice Service.

Start young

With a five-year-old son or daughter, parents can start talking to them about different types of coins and let them pay for things when out shopping, so they get used to using money.

Open a savings account

Opening a savings account for your child is a great way to show them how their money can grow. It will also start to teach them the very basic ways to invest(投资) and save money.

Provide chances to earn money

Provide chances for your kids to earn money. Encourage them to work for it. From a young age, offer payment for “extra” work around the house and yard.

Make it step by step

Parents should introduce their child's education about money step by step.

If parents haven't spoken before about savings and how to use money, don't jump in with one long chat, as it will become boring with money grows.

Be consistent(坚持的)

Although most parents give their children pocket money, only 36% of parents say they do so regularly. Being irregular can actually make it harder for children to learn about using money.
