It's March, 2050.Frank and Mary Smith wake up in their comfortable house in the morning and switch on the bedroom computer to get the latest news. They used to read the Times, but changed to electronic newspapers many years ago.
There is the usual news about space: another space flight has returned from Mars and scientists have discovered a new planet. Then they turn to
business news: the US dollar has risen greatly in Shanghai, one of the
world's leading business centers. Mary tells the computer to buy 5,000
dollars, and there is a quick response that it has been done.
As they watch the screen, Mary orders one of the household robots to make coffee for them. Frank disappears into the study to join a video conference with his partners around the world. He is a computer engineer, working for several companies. Mary has a quick look at the shopping channels. She also has a job and she is doing medical research. Both she and Frank used to have an office desk in London, but in 2014 they decided to move to the seaside and work from home.
Frank and Mary have one daughter, Louise, who also has her own workstation at home. She goes to school only one day a week, mainly to play with other students. Classrooms disappeared in 2030 because there was no longer any need for them: communications systems have made it much easier to learn at home.
Louise, now thirteen, is studying Chinese at present. It has become a world language as
important as English. Louise has many Chinese friends. They communicate by computer.
According to the family doctor, Louise will live to at least 130. Her wish is to work for a
few decades (十年) and then spend her time on music and painting.

Dear Disney,
Last weekend, the four members of my family spent an enjoyable holiday at the Magic
Kingdom - Disneyland. And one event made our visit seem truly magical.
We got to the front of the line at Space Mountain, only to find out that our little daughter Gloria couldn't take her ice-cream on the ride. We were so excited that we all forgot ice-cream was not allowed on the ride.
Gloria broke into tears and we all had no idea what to do. Then Murphy, one of the staff(员工) members, came over. She bent down and told Gloria that she would hold the ice-cream for her and give it to her when she finished the ride. Gloria said, "Promise?" Then she gave Murphy her ice-cream, and she completely enjoyed the ride.
As we walked out the exit(出口), there was Gloria's new friend with "her" ice-cream.
Now you and I both know what happened, because we know that an ice-cream won't last twenty minutes on a summer afternoon in Florida. Murphy knew what time we would get off the ride. She went to the nearest shop and bought a brand-new ice-cream thirty seconds before we walked out the exit. Gloria said, "Thank you," but I'm sure she thought it was the same ice-cream.
We know that someone tried hard to make our visit special. Thanks so much.
Your fan,
Carmen Rivera

If you live in the United States, the law says you can't have a full-time job until you are 16 years old. At 14 or 15, you can work part-time after school or on weekends, and during summer you can work 40 hours each week. Does all that mean that if you are younger than 14, you can't earn(赚) your own money? Of course not! Kids who are between the ages of 10 and 13 can earn money by doing lots of things. Valerie, 11, told us that she made money by cleaning up other people's yards. Lena, 13, makes money by knitting(织) dog sweaters and selling them to her neighbors, and Reisa said she had started taking art classes and showing her work to people. People have asked her to draw pictures for them and they pay her for them. Jasmine, 13, writes articles for different magazines! Earning is learning. By working to earn your own money, you are learning the skills you will need to succeed in life. These skills can include things like getting along with others, using technology and using your time. Some people think that asking for money is a lot easier than earning it; however, when you make your own money, you don't have to depend on someone else. The five dollars that you earn will probably make you feel a lot better in your hand than the twenty dollars you ask for.

Last week I drove up to the family farm, half-an-hour drive from Shepparton.
Wayde showed me around the farm where he began his day at about 6:30 a.m. He said that the cows couldn't listen to loud music while he was milking.
Cows are very nervous animals, and many farmers have played slow music to keep their cows calm. It's reported that playing some music to cows leads to more milk production. So a lot of farmers keep a radio on in the barn (畜舍) to keep them happy.
Too many people think cows like country music. In fact, cows don't enjoy such things as country music. They prefer classical music to rock'n'roll(摇滚). Thanks to some researchers in Britain, farmers now know how many beats per minute cows prefer. The best speed of the music seems to be under 100 beats per minute. Cows listening to music like Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony (《田园交响曲》) produced about 3.5% more milk a day than those listening to faster music. 根据短文内容,判断下列句子是否正确,对的写A, 错的写B
( )46. Wayde must be a guide.
( )47. The underlined word “milking” means “挤奶” in Chinese.
( )48. Playing some proper music to cows helps them grow better and produce more milk.
( )49. Cows like country music better than classical music.
( )50. Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony is the music under 100 beats per minute.
