Sometimes I really doubt whether there is love between my parents. Every day they are very busy trying to earn money in order to pay the high tuition for my brother and me. They don’t act in the romantic ways that I read in books or I see on TV. In their opinion, “I love you” is too luxurious for them to say. Sending flowers to each other on Valentine’s Day is even more out of the question. Finally my father has a bad temper. When he’s very tired from the hard work, it is easy for him to lose his temper.
One day, my mother was sewing a quilt. I silently sat down beside her and looked at her.
“Mom, I have a question to ask you,” I said after a while.
“What?” she replied, still doing her work.
“Is there love between you and Dad?” I asked her in a very low voice.
My mother stopped her work and raised her head with surprise in her eyes. She didn’t answer immediately. Then she bowed her head and continued to sew the quilt.
I was very worried because I thought I had hurt her. I was in a great embarrassment and I didn't know what I should do. But at last I heard my mother say the following words:
“Susan,” she said thoughtfully, “Look at this thread. Sometimes it appears, but most of it disappears in the quilt. The thread really makes the quilt strong and durable. If life is a quilt, then love should be a thread. It can hardly be seen anywhere or anytime, but it’s really there.”
I listened carefully but I couldn’t understand her until the next spring. At that time, my father suddenly got sick seriously. My mother had to stay with him in the hospital for a month. When they returned from the hospital, they both looked very pale. It seemed both of them had had a serious illness.
After they were back, every day in the morning and dusk, my mother helped my father walk slowly on the country road. My father had never been so gentle. It seemed they were the most harmonious couple. Along the country road, there were many beautiful flowers, green grass and trees. The sun gently glistened through the leaves. All of these made up the most beautiful picture in the world.
Once I thought love meant flowers, gifts and sweet kisses. But from this experience, I understand that love is just a thread in the quilt of our life, making life strong and warm.

Making a TV show is a lot of fun. But it’s also a lot of work. So how do you make a TV show? One of the most important parts of a TV show is the set. Sets are where the stories happen. Sets can look like a room in a house, a restaurant, or even a jungle.
Would you ever want to act on TV? Being an actor on TV is fun. You can be famous and sign autographs. But it’s also a lot of work. If you don’t want to be an actor, there are other jobs you can do in a TV studio. You can be a director, or you can work with lighting or sound. Many people work together during filming to make sure the show looks good.
More people work on the TV show after it is filmed. They are editors. Editing a TV show means putting the different parts of the show together to make a whole show. When someone edits the show, they also add music or sound effects to make the show more interesting.
So what do you think? Would you ever want to work in a TV studio? It might be fun!
48. Is making TV show a lot of work?
49. What are sets?
50. Why do many people work together during filming?

Time spent in a bookshop can be most enjoyable, whether you are a book-lover or only there to buy a book as a present. You may even have entered the shop just to find a shelter from a sudden rain. Whatever the reason, you can soon totally unaware of your surroundings. You soon become interested in some books or others, and usually it is only much later that you realize you have spent too much time there and have to rush off to keep some forgotten appointment.
This chance to escape the realities of everyday life is, I think, the main attraction of a bookshop. There are not many places where it is possible to do this. A music shop is very much like a bookshop. You can walk around such a place as much as you wish. If it is a good shop, no assistant will come up to you with the greeting “Can I help you?” You needn’t buy anything you don’t want. In a bookshop an assistant should remain in the background until you have finished reading. Then, and only then, are his services necessary.
Once, a medical student had to read a textbook which was far too expensive for him to buy. He couldn't borrow it from the library and the only copy he could find was in a certain bookshop. Every afternoon, therefore, he would go along to the shop and read a little of the book at a time. One day, however, he was disappointed to find the book missing from his usual place. He was about to leave, when he noticed the owner of the shop beckoning to him. Expecting to be told off, he went towards him. To his surprise, the owner pointed to the book which was tucked (folded beautifully) away in a corner. “I put it there in case anyone tries to buy it,” he said, and left the delighted student to continue his reading.
shelter: 遮蔽 unaware: 未意识到 attraction: 吸引 beckon: 示意
45. According to the passage, the main attraction of a bookshop is that________.
A. people can learn something from books
B. it can be a shelter from a sudden rain
C. the surroundings are all about new knowledge
D. it offers a chance to get free from the realities
46. The writer thinks that the assistant in a good bookshop should ________.
A. always greet customers pleasantly and warmly
B. help the readers to find what they want to read
C. not talk while the customers are reading
D. not stand beside the bookshelf all the time
47. The purpose of the writer in writing the last paragraph is to ________.
A. tell us a story that happened in a bookshop
B. tell us what a good bookshop assistant is like
C. teach us how to read in a shop without buying books
D. advise us to hide books if we need them

WHEN ARE YOU AN ADULT?
Many countries have ceremonies to celebrate their young people becoming adults. However, some countries do not. Instead, young people think of themselves as adults when they can do “adults” things. But when do you become an adult in the U.S.A.? Let’s look at what some American teenagers say.
Sam: I think you are an adult at 18. That’s when you can vote. You can help to choose who runs the state and the whole country. That’s grown up! My grandfather couldn’t vote until he was 21. They only change it to 18 in 1971. I guess they think we are more responsible at 18 now.
Jenny: I think it’s hard to choose. I get to drive a car at 16, don’t I? That’s a serious responsibility. When you have a driver’s license you show it to people to prove your age for all kinds of things. So that must be the age when you change from a young person to an adult. Because you have to prove you are that age and not a kid.
Suzie: I think there is something crazy about American laws about when young people can do things. So I can vote at 18 and drive at 16. So you would think that 18 is grown up, even if 16 isn’t. But then I can’t drink alcohol until I’m 21! If I’m an adult at 21, how can people stop me buying a can of beer in a shop?
vote: 选举
43. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. You can’t vote until 21.
B. You can drive a car at 18.
C. You can’t drink until 16.
D. You can buy beers before 21.
44. Sam thinks “grown up” means __________.
A. you can help to choose the president and governors
B. you can drink alcohol
C. you are responsible for all things you do
D. you can drive a car

In the fall of 1992, when Vicki was ten, she and her father, Jim, happened to notice an advertisement for a new flight school. Her father suggested to her that since she wanted to be an astronaut, she might want to take a flying lesson, just see if she liked it. She was excited.
Vicki continued with her flying lessons. She was so brave and devoted that she impressed her teacher and soon passed ground school with straight—A’s. She would have passed her pilot exam, too, if she had been old enough. Instead, she’ll have to wait until she is 16 to get her pilot’s license.
Vicki made her first record-breaking flight in September 1993, at the age of 11. She flew a small plane across the United States, from Augusta to California. Although by law she had to have a licensed pilot at her side, he never touched the controls or helped her in any way. She was the youngest woman pilot to fly across the U.S. and the youngest pilot ever to fly across the U.S. from East to West. That direction is considered the most difficult flight because it means flying against the wind. And in fact on part of her flight she had to fight her way through strong headwinds. Because she was flying a small plane and FAA rules limited her to flying no more than eight hours each day, the trip took several days with eight stops. Her parents followed along on commercial flights, meeting her at each stop.
40. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. Jim took Vicki to the flight school.
B. Vicki asked her father to send her to the flight school.
C. Jim advised Vicki to take the flying lessons.
D. Vicki didn’t like the flight school.
41. What made Vicki’s first record-breaking flight difficult?
A. The strong winds. B. Her age. C. Her plane. D.Her experience.
42. Vicki was the youngest pilot _____.
A. in history in America
B. to fly across the U.S. alone
C. to fly across the U.S. from East to West
D. to break the first flight record in the world

Hi Eric,
We don’t have smog in Oxford. We get fog sometimes, but that’s all. Oxford is much smaller than LA. We only have about 135,000 people. I looked up the 1900 population, it was about 57,000. So it is about twice as many people, not ten times as many, like LA! Oxford is much smaller than London - London has about 7,000,000 people. So that means that LA has more people than London. LA gets hotter than Oxford. We have colder winters too – it can be -4°C in winter.
I’m not surprised that your new student only knew about the university. It is famous because it is one of the oldest universities in the country. There are about 18,000 students. The brother of my best friend is at Aberystwyth University, in Wales. There the population is 14,000 and half of that are students! It must be a strange place to live! There are more tourists in Oxford than students, I should think. We get a lot of tourists, all year round. We also get a lot of young foreign students because there are a lot of language schools here. You can stand in the middle of Oxford, close your eyes, and hear accents from all over the world!
Your e-mail friend, Ben
