One of the strangest jobs at the Oscars is that of a seat-filler. When one of the stars needs to go to the bathroom, a seat-filler sits in the star’s seat. In that way, the TV cameras won’t show any empty seats. Kathy Muller talks about her night as a seat-filler.
(A)I was told to reach the theater in the middle of the day, wearing my dress for the evening. There were about 200 of us seat-filler, all very excited. We were told what we should and shouldn’t do (for example, “Don’t talk to the stars”), and then (B)我们一直等到五点钟。 That’s when the stars started coming.
The show stared at six o’clock. We had to stand outside the doors. Then, when someone came out to go to the bathroom or have a cigarette(香烟), we were told to go and sit in their seats. (C)The show was three hours long, and I only sat down five times. By the end, I was really tired, but I was happy because, during the evening, I sat behind Jim Carrey(he’s very tall!)and close to Denzel Washington, Nicole Kidman and Julia Roberts. It was an exciting night, but I think

If you look into the sky at night, you may see something moving and shining that you have never seen before. It might be a comet(彗星).
A comet sometimes looks like a star. Like a planet, a comet has no light of its own. It shines from the sunlight it reflects(反射). Like the earth, a comet goes round the sun, but on a much longer path(轨道) than the earth travels.
Some scientists think that a large part of a comet is water frozen into pieces of ice. This is mixed with iron and rock dust and perhaps a few big pieces of rock. When the sun melts(融化) the ice in the comet, great clouds, together with the dust, form a long tail. Many people have seen a comet. However no one knows how many comets there are. There may be millions of comets, but only a few come close enough to the earth for us to be able to see them. Even then it’s not often that a comet comes close enough to be seen without a telescope.(望远镜).
An English man named Edmund Halley, who lived from 1656 to 1742, found out a lot about the paths that comets take through the sky. Some comets never come back. Others keep coming back at regular intervals(有规律的间隔). A big comet that keeps returning was named after Halley because he was the one who worked out when it would come back again.
Some people saw Halley’s Comet in 1910. Maybe you have ever seen Halley’s Comet because the last time it came close to the sun and the earth was in 1986. If not you will probably be able to see Halley’s Comet when it comes near the earth again.

Spending just a few hours a week online may make people feel more socially isolated(孤立的),lonely and down-hearted, according to a two-year study of nearly 100 families with Internet access.
“We were surprised to find that what is a special technology has such bad effect on social communications,” the leader author, Dr. Robert Kraut of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, said in a statement to the press(新闻界). The findings suggest that “rather than encourage students to use the Internet alone for research, for example, teachers might give pupils online group homework to complete with classmates. Local groups might build websites that allow neighbours to discuss local affairs(地方事务).
Before the technology develops and can be much more beneficial , people should control their wishes to use much of the Internet, Dr. Kraut and other experts advise. In order to limit(限制) and monitor their children’s use, and encourage family activities, parents might consider putting the computer in the living room, rather than a child’s room, they suggest.
