　　School is expensive for many African children．Lots of families can't afford school uniforms or exercise books even though they don-t have to pay for school．

　　For those lucky enough to go to school, they have a lot to learn．Some take two language classes：English or French, and their first language．There is al90 math, science, history, social studies and geography．Chores take up much of children's time after school．They have to get water and firewood for the family; every day．Also there's cleaning, washing and helping Mum with the meal．

　　It's not all work and no play．Sports are very popular．Children can make goals with twigs(嫩树枝)and their own footballs with plastic and bits of string(绳子)．They play in the country and the streets of old towns．There're many football teams for teenagers in Africa．

　　It's really expensive to get on the Internet．To surf the net for 20 hours costs over 600 yuan．This is more than the average(平均的)monthly pay per person．

　　Egypt and South Africa are the top two users of the Internet in Africa．All of the capital cities there can get on Internet．

　　Some schools offer computer lessons but few students can enjoy computer fun at home．

　　Speaking is different among the four skills in learning English．The other three you can do alone on your own, but you can't really speak alone．Speaking to yourself can be“dangerous”because men in white coats may come and take you away!Then how can you practice speaking?Where can you find people to speak English with?

　　At school-If you pay to go to a language school, you should use the chance to speak．If your teacher asks you to speak in pairs with other students, try to say as much as possible．Don't worry about your mistakes．Just speak!

　　Cafes and bars-There are American, British, Irish and Australian bars in many big cities．If you can find one, you will probably meet many people speaking English as their first or second language．

　　Songs and videos-Repeat the words of an English song singing with the music until it becomes automatic(不假思索)．It's good practice for your memory and for the mouth muscles(肌肉)that you need for English．

　　Language is all around you－Everywhere you go, you will find language．Shop names, notices, and car numbers……When you walk down the street, practice reading the words and numbers that you see．Say them to yourself．It's not exactly a conversation, but it will help you to“think”in English．

　　I have been a reporter for fifteen years．I chose this job so that I could travel the world, but the job has taught me many unforgettable lessons．My work is sometimes boring but for most of the time it is amazing and inspiring．

　　In India, I visited a city．There were many homeless children．Some were young and lived in the streets．But then a lady called Rosa opened a home for them．In one whole year, she was looking after two hundred kids, feeding them, teaching them and giving them hope．

　　Another time, I was in Japan and met a young girl with a serious illness．After seven operations, she had to have thirteen more in hospital．However, when I met her, she was still smiling．

　　Here in China, after the terrible Wenchuan Earthquake, I found a three-year old boy named Lang Zheng．He had been in the ruins(废墟)for more than ten hours before he was found by the soldiers．Though weak and injured, the brave boy lifted his right hand above his head with difficulty and saluted the soldiers to show his thanks, which became the most moving moment in the disaster(灾难)．

　　Thanks to the experience as a reporter, I myself am getting braver and stronger．When I face challenges in my life, I always remember the courage(勇气)of these three people．

　　One midnight, a little girl woke up to pass water．She by herself got up and down her bed, walked to the bedroom door and opened it．She looked outside and walked back, for it was so dark in the hall that she feared．

　　Her mother said,“Don't be afraid, honey．Take courage!”

　　“What's courage?”she asked, running to her mother's bed．

　　“Courage is the brave breath,”her mother answered．

　　“Mum, do you have courage?”

　　“Certainly．”

　　The girl held out her little hands, saying,“Mum, blow some of your breath of courage to me．”

　　After her mother blew out two mouthfuls of breath into her little cold hands, the little girl clenched her fists(握拳)nervously, afraid that the“breath of courage”would run away．Then with her fists clenched, she walked out of the bedroom towards the bathroom with nothing to fear．

　　Her mother said to herself,“It will be nice if someone can blow some kind of ‘breath' to me．Then I can hold it in my hands too when I feel terrified or lost．”

　　In fact, mostly, what we are terrified of is nothing but the fear in our mind．Who we should defeat(战胜)is nobody but ourselves．
