　　Beijing Opera is also called Peking Opera．It came into being after 1790 when the famous four Anhui opera troupes(戏班)came to Beijing．Its music and singing(唱腔)come from Xipi and Erhuang in Anhui and Hubei．Its costumes are all fascinating and artistic．It is the highest expression of the Chinese culture．It’s full of famous stories, beautiful facial paintings, and wonderful gestures and fighting．This kind of opera is very popular with Chinese people．

　　There are four main roles in Beijing Opera：Sheng, Dan, Jing and Chou．Sheng is the leading male(男性)actor．For example, a Wusheng is a soldier or fighter．A Xiaosheng is a young man．A Laosheng is an old man．Dan is the female(女性)role．Jing, mostly male, is the face-painted role and Chou is the comedy actor or clown．

　　Stories in Beijing Opera are very interesting．Some of them are from the history book, but most of them are from the literature, especially famous novels．The people in the story usually have some disagreements．They become angry and unhappy．They are sad and lonely．Sometimes they are nervous and worried．Then they find a way to make peace．The stories usually end with happiness and laughter and people are all happy in the end．

　　“Everything happens for the best,”my mother said whenever things weren’t going my way．“Don’t worry, one day your luck will change．”

　　Mother was right, as I discovered after I had finished my college education．I had decided to try for aq job in radio．One day, I wanted to host(主持)a sports programme．I went to Chicago and knocked on the door of every station．But I got turned down every time．

　　In one station, a kind lady said my problem was that I hadn’t got enough experience．“Get some work with a small station and work your way up,”she said．

　　I went back home．I couldn’t get a job there, either．Then my dad told me a businessman had opened a store and needed someone to help him．But again, I didn’t get the job．

　　I felt really down．“Your luck will change,”Mom said to me．Dad lent me the car to help me to look for my job．I tried another radio station in Iowa．But the owner, a nice man, told me he had already had someone．

　　As I left his office, I asked,“How can someone be a sports announcer(播音员)if he can’t get a job in a radio station?”

　　I was waiting for the lift when I heard the man call．“What did you mean?Do you know anything about football?”He put me in front of a microphone and asked me to try to imagine that I was giving my opinion on a football game, I succeeded．

　　On my way home, Mom’s words came back to me,“One day your luck will change, Son．And when it happens, it’ll feel doubly(加倍的)good because of all the hard work you’ve had．”At that moment I knew what just what she ment．

　　Years ago, a college teacher gave a group of graduate(毕业)students this job：Go to a poor place．Take 200 boys, between the ages of 12 and 16, and find out their living environment．The predict their chances for the future．

　　Would you know what to do during a big earthquake(地震)?Scientists have some advice for us．

　　If the ground begins shaking while you are driving, stop your car on the roadside and stay in it．If you are in a tall building, don't use the lift and never jump out of the windows．When you are in a living room, find a strong table or rush into a smaller room like washroom．Then lie down your body．Take care of your head．When you are in a public place, like supermarket or cinema, don't crowd in jam(拥挤), or you may fall over and get hurt．Cross your arms to protect yourself．You can also find a place to hide．

　　Nowadays, in the United States and other western countries, some teens are choosing to become vegetarians．That is, they choosing not to eat meat．There are many types of vegetarians, some of whom don't even eat animal products such as milk, eggs, or yogurt．Having balanced meals is very important, especially for teens who are growing up．So why are they becoming vegetarians?Well, each person chooses to become vegetarian for different reasons; The most popular reason is just wanting to be healthier．
