　　Hi, my name is Alex．This is my school schedule．I have to wake up every morning at about 6∶30．First, I have breakfast．Then I ride my bike to school．It takes me 20 minutes to get there．

　　I have four classes in the morning．I like history the most．Mr Rudolph is really cool because he knows everything about history, and he tells us lots of interesting stories．We also get a 15-minutes break in the morning．I usually talk to Seth and Franklin at that time．We also share our lunch together, near the football pitch．

　　The afternoon is easier, since I have only two classes．Chemistry is my favourite．We get to do fun experiments．I want to be a doctor one day．Art and craft is also fun．Our teacher, Mrs Lester, is nice．She encourages(鼓励)us even if our drawing is bad．

　　After class, I ride my bike home．I spend about an hour doing my homework and then, I go out with friends for a while．

　　Why are brick and click companies, like Barnes and Noble, Toys R Us, and Wal-Mart so successful?First, many customers know and trust their names．Their websites, like walmart．com, are easy to remember．These companies also have a lot of experience．They know how to run a successful business．

　　In the world of e-commerce, companies are fighting for every dollar and every customer．Will brick and click companies win the war?Only time will tell．

　　Mr．Ma, a famous mental doctor from Beijing once said at an important meeting,“Now many young students can have problems with their minds．Some students become worried because they have to study very hard．Others have trouble getting on well with people around them like their parents and classmates．Parents and teachers should care more about this problem．”

　　Then Mr．Ma gave some examples．One patient, a middle school student from Xi'an was doing badly in his lessons．He thought his teachers and friends often laughed at him, and he became so nervous and worried that one night he left his home without telling his parents．Another student, a 14-year-old schoolgirl from Shanghai, was very afraid of exams．While she was reading the exam paper, she couldn't think of anything to write．

　　A recent report from Jiefang Daily says about 18％ of the young students in Shanghai have mental problems．They often felt worried and very unhappy．Unluckily many of them won't go and ask for help．Some think they will look stupid if they go to see a doctor．Others won't talk about their secrets．

　　At the end of the meeting, Mr．Ma offered some good ideas to young people：

　　☆Talk to your parents or teacher often．

　　☆Take part in group activities．

　　☆Try to get on well with the people around you．

　　☆Go to see a doctor if you often feel unhappy．

　　Whenever the sun dropped and the blue sky came up, my father and I used to climb the mountain near my house．Walking together, my father and I used to have a lot of conversations through which I learned lessons from his experiences．He always told me,“You should have goals like climbing the mountain．”This has largely influenced my life．Without the mountain-climbing that we both enjoyed, we couldn't have enough time to spend together because my father was very busy．I really got a lot from mountain-climbing．It gave me time to talk with my father and to be in deep thought as well as develop my patience(耐力)．

　　Once we climbed a very high mountain．It was so challenging for me because I was only ten years old．During the first few hours of climbing, I enjoyed the fresh air, the flowers and trees, and the birds' singing, but as time passed, I got a pain in both of my legs．I wanted to quit climbing．In fact, I hated it at that moment, but my father said to me,“You can always see a beautiful sky and enjoy the wonderful scenes at the top of the mountain, but you can't see it before you reach the top．Only there at the top, can you see all of the nice things, just like in life．”

　　At that time, I was too young to understand his words．But later after that, I got new hope and confidence．I found myself standing at the top of the mountain．And there, I could see the whole of the sky, which was as clear as crystal(水晶)．

　　On October 31, 2009, Chinese famous scientist Qian Xuesen, died in Beijing when he was 98 years old．He is famous as the country's“father of space technology”and“king of rocketry”．

　　Qian was born in 1911 in Hangzhou．He left for the United States and graduated school in 1936．He studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and later at the California Institute of Technology．Qian began his career in the US and was regarded as one of the brightest minds in the new field of aeronautics(航空学)before returning to China in 1955．

　　After he returned to school, Qian set up the first missile(导弹)and rocket research institute(学院)of China．The institute later helped start Chinese space program．He worked on its first satellite．

　　He retired(退休)in the year before Chinese manned space program was launched in 1992．But his research formed the basis for the Long March CZ-2F rocket that carried astronaut Yang Liwei into orbit in 2003．

　　In August, 2009, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visited Qian and spoke highly of him for putting his heart into Chinese defense(防御)technologies．Qian told him,“I'm trying to live to be 100 years old．”

　　Every country has its heroes．The heroes are the people the nation and especially the young people admire．If you get a list of the heroes of a nation, it will tell you the potential(潜力)of that nation．

　　Today in America, if you ask the high school students to list their heroes, their choice would probably fall into three groups．The first group of heroes would be the rock stars the people connected with rock music．There is no doubt that such people do have talent(天才)but one wonders if one should hold up rock stars as a model．The rock stars too often are mixed with drugs and their personal life is not all that good．The rock stars are rich and wear the latest fashion styles．However, one should seek(寻觅)more in a hero than such things as money and good clothes．

　　A second type of hero for the American youth is the sports star．Again you have a person who has a great ability in one area－sports．However, too often the personal life of the sports star is a bit of a disorder(混乱)．Too frequently(频繁)drugs and drinking are a part of life of the sports star．

　　A third type of hero is the TV or movie star．This person may have lots of acting talent and is quite handsome．However, the personal life of too many actors is quite sad and they should not be held up as a model of young people．Today, the rock star, the athlete, and the actor all have become the models of the youth in America．Really, do you hear a young person say that his hero is a doctor, a teacher, or a scientist?These people are not rich and do not wear fashionable clothes．However, they are talented people who work hard to make the world a better place for everyone．

　　What is really sad is that the young try to imitate their heroes．They like to wear the same clothes and follow their styles．If the heroes of today for the American young people are limited only to rock stars, athletes and actors, the future does not look too bright．

　　One of the most popular American singers of 20th century was Elvis Presley．Elvis Presley made the music called rock‘n'roll popular around the world．He sold millions of records and made many successful films, and he helped change the direction of popular music in the 1960's．Elvis Presley was born in 1935 in a small town called tupelo, in Mississippi in the southern United States; he came from a very poor family．His parents were simply country people who often took Elvis to church．At church he learned to sing, and he never forgets the kind of songs that he used to sing in church as a child．

　　When he was a school boy, Elvis moved to the town of Memphis in Tennessee(田纳西州)．He attended high school in Memphis, but he was not a very good student．His only real interest was singing．He began to sing in the style that is popular in Tennessee, a style called country and western．

　　In 1955 in Memphis he recorded some country and western songs for his mother's birthday, the people at the recording studio liked Elvis's singing and music．There was something different about it．It was country and western music, but it also sounded a little like the music which black people used to sing in the American south, music known as blues．

　　Dogs are known for their sense of smell．They can find missing people and things like bombs and illegal drugs．Now a study suggests that the animal known as man's best friend can even find bladder(膀胱)cancer．

　　Cancer cells(细胞)are thought to produce chemicals with unusual smells．Researchers think dogs have the ability to smell these smells, even in very small amounts, in urine(尿)．The sense of smell in dogs is thousands of times better than in humans．

　　The study follows reports of cases where, for example, a dog showed great interest in a growth on the leg of its owner．The man was later found to be skin cancer．

　　Carolyn Willis led a team of researchers at Amersham Hospital in England．They trained different kinds of dogs for the experiment．The study involved urine collected from bladder cancer patients, from people with other diseases and from healthy people．

　　Each dog was tested 8 times．In each test there were 7 samples for the dogs to smell．The dog should signal the one from a bladder cancer patient by lying down next to it．Two cocker dogs were correct 56 percent of the time．But the scientists reported an average success rate of 41 percent．

　　The British Medical Journal published the research．In all, 36 bladder cancer patients and 108 other people took part．During training, all the dogs reportedly even identified(认出)a cancer in a person who had tested healthy before the study．Doctors found a growth on the person's right kidney(肾)．

　　Carolyn Willis says dogs could help scientists identify the combined(合成)chemicals produced by bladder cancer．That information could then be used to develop machines to test for the chemicals．The team also plans to use dogs to help identify markers for other kinds of cancer．

　　Monday was China's traditional“Tomb-Sweeping Day”, when people mourn(哀悼)their dead．But it also became a day for national celebration, when rescuers saved 115 workers who were trapped for more than a week in the flooded Wangjialing Coal Mine in Shanxi province．

　　“It's a miracle(奇迹),”Liu Dezheng told reporters on Monday morning after the first nine miners(矿工)were taken out shortly after midnight．“We believe more miracles will happen．”

　　At about noon, rescuers carried out the second group of 106 survivors(幸存者)．The survivor clapped his hands and tried to reach for his rescuers in an expression of joy．Both Shanxi Governor Wang Jun and State Administration of Work Safety Director Luo Lin called the rescue“a miracle”in the history of China's coal mine rescues．

　　The trapped miners survived underground with the encouragement of thinking of their families．They live through eight days and eight nights by getting sawdust(锯末), tree bark(树皮)and turbid(混浊的)water for food．

　　One survivor said that he had to hang from tunnel walls by his belt(腰带)to survive when the disaster came．After being in the water for three days, he climbed into two passing mine carts(矿车)with eight other men and floated to a dry place．

　　A rescue team on an inflatable boat(橡皮艇)threw lifelines(救生索)to the trapped men after realizing that the boat could not move any further．Once the survivors found themselves in the boat, Wang said he was asked whether he would take them out．“I promised them that they would be lifted out as long as I could get out,”Wang said．

　　After being rescued, one of the survivors told doctors he wanted to call his family．“I have two daughters and a son．I have to work in the mine to earn money for them,”said another 45-year-old survivor who was taken to the Shanxi Aluminium Plant Hospital, which admitted(接纳)35 survivors from the mine．The hospital is among five local ones treating the workers．

　　“It's great to be up on the surface again,”said one 27-year-old survivor．
