　　A young boy was playing a ball in the street．He threw it hard, and it broke the window of a house and fell inside．A woman came to the window and shouted at the boy．The boy ran away．But he still wanted his ball back．A few minutes later he came back and knocked at the door and said, “My father’s going to come and mend your windows very soon．”

　　In a moment, a man came to the door with tools(工具)in his hand, so the woman let the boy take his ball away．

　　When the man finished mending the window, he said to the woman, “Please give me ten dollars(美元)．”

　　“But aren’t you the father of the boy?” The woman asked．“No,” he answered, “Aren’t you his mother?”

　　Smith was a landlord(老板), He loved money very much and never gave anything to anybody．Soon he became rich．

　　One day the weather was fine．There wasn’t a cloud in the sky and it was very warm．The landlord was walking along a river with his friends, when, all of a sudden, he slipped and fell into it．He cried, “Help! Help!”One of his friends held out his hand and said, “Give me your hand and I will pull you out．”The landlord’s head went under the water and then came up again, but he did not give his hand to his friends．Then another of his friends tried but the same thing happened．

　　Just then a farmer came over and saw all this．He knew the landlord very well．He said to the others, “Let me try．”He held out his hand and said to the landlord, “Take my hand and I will pull you out．”Hearing this, the landlord took the farmer’s hand, and in a minute the farmer pulled the landlord out of the water．

　　All the others got very surprised at this and asked the farmer, “Why did he give his hand to you but not to us?”The farmer said, “You don’t know your friend very well．When you say ‘give to’ him, he does nothing．But when you say ‘take’, he takes．”

　　It’s Sunday morning．Rose gets up early in the morning．After breakfast her parents take her to the zoo．They go to see the pandas and other animals．The pandas live only in China．There are not any pandas in America．So they like the pandas best．Outside the zoo gate there is a picture．It’s a picture of a panda with“welcome”, there, in the zoo．Rose sees not only pandas, but also many other animals．A panda is round and fat．It looks like a ball．It always moves slowly like a ball rolling(滚动)．The elephant is the biggest animal on land．There are many monkeys on the hill．Some of them are sitting in the trees．Some are picking nuts．And the others are running or climbing up the trees．Rose and her parents have a good time in the zoo．

　　Unfortunately, in many parts of the world, men have not realized(功能)is the most important．In their eagerness(渴望)to make money from trees, some people have cut trees down in large numbers, only to find that without them they have lost the best friends they had．And besides(此外), they are usually too careless to plant and look after new trees, SO the forests slowly disappear．

　　This doesn't only mean that men will have fewer trees．The results are even more serious：where there are trees, their roots(根)break up soil－allowing the rain to sink in and also bind(固定)the soil, thus(因而)preventing it from being washed away easily, but where there are no trees, the rain fails and carrying away the rich top－soil．When all the top－soil is gone, nothing remains(剩下)but worthless desert．
