　　Jack’s grandpa was very rich(富裕)and had some shops．The old man began to learn drawing when he was sixty, and he loved it very much．For twelve years he drew a lot and there were many pictures in his workroom．He liked the pictures and kept them well．

　　One day the old man was ill．He had to be in hospital．Before he died(死), he said to Jack, “I want to give my pictures to a school as presents．Then the students will remember me for ever(永远)．But I don’ t know which school I’m going to give to．Can you help me?

　　“Well, ”said the little boy, “you’ d better give them to a blind(瞎的、盲人)school．”

　　Whales(鲸)are the biggest animals in the sea．They are much bigger than any animal on land．The largest whales are more than 30 metres long．

　　Whales live in water, but they are not fish．They have warm blood(血)and they breathe(呼吸)air through(通过)a hole in the top of their head．They can stay under water for about an hour without breathing．

　　There are two kinds of whales．One kind has a big mouth with teeth．Its mouth is four metres deep．It can eat other large animals of the sea．This kind is called a killer(杀手)whale．

　　The other kind of whale is much larger than the killer whale．It has no teeth．It has rows of bone(骨)in its mouth．Small sea life is caught in these bones．These whales also have a very small throat(喉)．They cannot eat anything larger than an apple．

　　Whales have skin(皮肤)but not scales(鱼鳞)．Their skin is gray or black in colour．Under their skin is a lot of fat(脂肪)．This fat is used to make oil(油)．The oil is used for many things such as making soap．

　　Some whales have oil in their heads．This is pure(纯的)oil and is very expensive．From 114 to 228 litres(升)of oil can be found in the head of some whales．Sometimes on big whale has hundreds of litres of oil．

　　Joanne had planned to leave work early this afternoon，at three o’clock．But when she finally came out of her office, all the other conductors had already left．Now she was caught in a heavy traffic in central Birmingham at 5：30, and at 6：30 she was expected to be at a meeting．

　　At last, she arrived at her home．As she opened the door, she noticed something unusual about Sheba, a large dog．She could see easily Sheba was feeling bad and could hardly breathe(呼唤)．Joanne knew she would have to take her dog to the vet immediately．

　　“It looks like there’s something in her throat(喉咙), ”said Dr．Stern, “It shouldn’t take me too long to get it out．”

　　Being in a hurry, Joanne left the doctor with the dog and rushed back home．As she once more entered the house, the phone rang．Dr．Stem’s loud and worried voice was heard, “I want you to get right out of that house immediately．The police will be there any time now．Wait outside for us．”Joanne was surprised and afraid．She quickly ran into the street．

　　At that moment, a police car stopped outside the house．Two policemen got out and ran into the house through the still open door．Then the doctor arrived．Just then the two policemen reappeared from the house, half-carrying a white-faced man．who, it seemed, could hardly walk．There was blood(血)all over him．

　　“I think he must be a thief, ”said the doctor．“I knew he was there because when I finally removed what was in Sheba’s throat，and found it was three human fingers．”

　　It is strange that dolphins are friendly to men, and for thousands of years, there are many stories about dolphins and men．In the 19th century, in a dangerous part of the sea near New Zealand, there was a dolphin．The seamen liked him very much and gave him a very good name, Jack．From 1871 to 1903, Jack met every boat in the area and showed it the way．In 1903 a passenger on a boat with the name of The Penguin shot and hurt Jack．Luckily the dolphin didn’t die, and after a long time he was well again．He guided the ships through the area for nine more years, but he refused to help the boat of the Penguin．

　　Today, some people still kill dolphins, but many countries in the world now protect them．In these places, people are not allowed to kill them．
