　　Chicago is next to a big beautiful lake, Lake Michigan．In the summer Lake Michigan is warm and blue．People lie on the beaches and swim in the water．In the winter Lake Michigan is cold and gray．Snow covers the beaches, and ice covers the water．

　　On a cold January day, a little boy and his father were playing in the snow on Chicago beach．The boy was Jimmy Tontlewicz．He was four years old．Jimmy was playing with a sled(雪橇)．He pushed the sled down a small hill．The sled went onto the ice of Lake Michigan．Jimmy ran after the sled．He ran onto the ice．Suddenly the ice broke, and Jimmy fell into the cold water．Jimmy’s father jumped into the water．He couldn’t find Jimmy．Minutes went by．He still couldn’t find Jimmy．Firemen arrived．Twenty minutes later they found Jimmy and pulled him out of the water．Jimmy was not breathing, and his heart was not beating．He was dead．At the beach paramedics(医务辅助人员)worked on Jimmy for an hour．He began to breathe, and his heart began to beat．The paramedics rushed Jimmy to the hospital．

　　Doctors at the hospital put Jimmy in bed．They put him on a cold mattress(床垫)because they wanted his body to warm up slowly．They gave him some medicine because they wanted him to sleep．After eight days in the hospital, Jimmy woke up, but he couldn’t walk or talk．So he went on staying in the hospital for six weeks．Every day he got better．Then he went to another hospital．He stayed there for seven weeks．He began to walk, talk, and play again．

　　Jimmy was in the water for more than 20 minutes．He couldn’t breathe in the water．He couldn’t get any oxygen．But today he is alive and healthy．How is it possible? Jimmy is alive because the water was ice cold．Usually the brain(大脑)needs a lot of oxygen．But when it’s very cold, the brain slows down．It doesn’t need much oxygen．So the ice cold water saved Jimmy．Jimmy’s father has another reason．He says, “Jimmy is alive today because he is a fighter(战士)．

　　In the Caucasus Mountains, nearly 50 out of every 100,000 people live to celebrate their 100^th birthday, and many don’t stop at 100!In American only 3 people in 100,000 reach 100．But these old people aren’t alone．The people who live high in the Himalaya Mountains and the Andes Mountains, seem to share the secret of long life, too．

　　First of all, hard physical work is a way of life for all of these long-lived people．They begin their long days of physical work as children and never seem to stop．For example, Mr．Rustam is 142 years of age．He has experienced several wars．His wife is 116 years old．They have been married for 90 years．Mr．Rustam doesn’t want to stop his work as a farmer．“Why? What else would I do?” He asks．Oh, he has slowed down a bit．Now he might work for 6 hours in the field instead of 10．

　　Another factor(因素)that may contribute(有助于)to the good health of these people is their isolation．Most of them are kept off the modern world．

　　Inherited(遗传的)factors also help．Most of the longest-lived people had parents and grandparents who also reached very old ages．So good families genes(基因)may be one factor in living longer．

　　Finally, although these three groups don’t eat exactly the same food, they eat little animal meat．Their diets are full of fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains, cheese and milk．They never eat more food than their bodies need．

　　It was early morning．Peter Corbett helped Mark Wellman out of his wheelchair and onto the ground．They stood before El Captain, a huge rock almost 1．2 kilometers high．Mark had long dreamed to climb El Captain when he was a child．At the age of twenty one, he had fallen while climbing mountain, losing his legs．But he never lost his love for life．

　　Mark knew he couldn't finish the climb alone, but his friend Peter would be there to lend a helping hand．They thought it would take seven days to reach the top．Now Peter climbed about 30 meters up and hit a piton(岩钉)into the rock．Fastening(拴紧)one end of a 50?meter rope(绳子)to the piton, he let the other end of the rope fall down．Mark caught the rope and fastened it to his belt．He next reached above his head and fastened a T-bar(丁字铁)to the rope．Mark took a deep breath, pushed the T-bar up almost as far as his arms could reach, and began the first pull?up．High above, Peter let out a cheer, “You're on your way．”

　　For the first four days the two men progressed upward(向上)without accident．But on the fifth day, a very strong wind began to blow, making it hard for Mark to hold on to his rope．But Mark kept on pushing up the T-bar and pulling himself up．

　　It took them one day more than they had expected．But as the two heads appeared the group of people waiting on the top went wild with joy．

　　Mark Wellman showed that if you set your heart and mind on something, no wall is too high, no dream impossible．

　　Kitesurfing as a water sport began in the 1980s, but didn't get popular until the end of last century．It is also known as kiteboarding, and in some European countries as flysurfing．Kitesurfing works through wind power(动力)by using a large kite to pull a rider on the water at high speed．

　　The Shanghai History Museum is putting on exhibition to remember the Long March(长征)which took place 75 years ago．More than 220 photos and 40 other things are on show．All the exhibition is explained in Chinese．The show will end on November 20．

　　When you cough or sneeze, please turn your head away from others and cover your mouth with the full part of your hand．Afterwards, you should say,” Excuse me．” This is a rule I set for my students

　　It is so simple, but many kinds have never been told to do this．In fact, I notice adults cough and sneeze in public without putting a hand over the mouth．I hate traveling by subway(地铁)in New York during cold and flu season, because it is certain that someone is going to stand right behind me and cough or sneeze on my neck．

　　One important thing I point out to the kids is that after they sneeze or cough on their hand, they should wash their hands as soon as possible．Otherwise, they will be passing those germs(病菌)along to everything and everyone they touch．

　　In order to help the kids remember this rule, I tell them about an old story．It says that when you sneeze, evil spirits jump into your body．If you don’t cover your mouth, the spirits will enter, but if you cover your mouth, you will keep them out, We say “God bless you” when someone sneezes, and in Germany you should say “Gesundheit”．That means “Good health to you．“ Both expressions are said just in case you didn’t cover your mouth in time and the spirits were able to enter your body．The kids love finding out the origins(起源)of these expressions and it encourage them to put the advice to use more often．

　　When people use fuels(燃料), such as coal and gasoline, poisonous gases are give off．When these gases mix with rain, acid rain forms．Many power stations burn fuels in order to creat the electricity(电)that we use in our homes and offices every day．Cars and trucks also send these gases into the air when they burn gasoline．When rain mixes with these gases, harmful things called acids form．This is acid rain．

　　Acid rain damages(毁坏)everything that it touches．It poisons our rivers, ponds, lakes, and oceans along with all the life in them．It pollutes our soil and crops, harms trees, and can even kill fish and plants．Acid rain also eats away at buildings．

　　We need to cut down on the pollution that gets into our air．Turn off lights, television, and other electrical appliances if you are not using them, Walk or take a bike whenever possible．If you are travelling a long distance, take a bus or train to save fuel．

　　As research shows, acid rain harms our environment．But people everywhere can take small steps now to help protect our environment for future generations．

　　After our hospital visit, my husband and I needed cheering up, so we thought we would treat ourselves to a big breakfast at our favourite restaurant．While we were waiting for our meals, we decided to use all our small change and make our wallets light, so we counted it out as we waited．

　　I vaguely(含糊地)remember seeing a man sitting nearby．When our meals arrived, we found a note．It read,” Your breakfast has been paid for．Hope you have a lovely day．”

　　It was a wonderful surprise as nothing like that had ever happened to us．He must have thought we could hardly pay the bill．We looked around to thank him, but he had left．As retirees(退休者)，we were grateful for the help like this, but it was the kindness of a total stranger that meant so much more to us．

　　Alice was now in a long dark room with doors all round the walls, and she could not see the White Rabbit anywhere．

　　She tried to open the doors, but they were all locked(锁上的)．“How will I ever get out again?” she thought sadly．Then she saw a little glass table with three legs, and on the top of it was a very small gold key．Alice quickly took the key and tried it in all the doors, but she couldn’t open any．

　Then she saw another door, a door that was only forty centimetres high．The little gold key unlocked this door easily, but Alice couldn’t get through it－she was much too big．So she lay on the floor and looked through the open door, into a beautiful garden with green trees and bright flowers．

　　“I’d like to be out there－not in this dark room．Why can’t I get smaller?” It was already a very strange day, and Alice was beginning to think that anything was possible．

　　After a while she locked the door again, got up and went back to the glass table．She put the key down and then she saw a little bottle on the table．Round the neck of the bottle was a piece of paper with the words DRINK ME in large letters．

　　“It can be dangerous to drink out of strange bottles,” she said．“What will it do to me?” She drank a little bit very slowly．The taste was very nice and very soon Alice finished the bottle．

　　“I think I’m getting smaller and smaller every second．” And she was．“And now,” she said happily, “I can get through the little door into that beautiful garden．”

　　She ran at once to the door．Then she remembered that the little gold key was back on the glass table．She ran back to the table for it, but she was now much too small! The key was high above her, on top of the table．She tried very hard to climb up the table leg, but she couldn’t do it．

　　At last, tired and unhappy, she got angry with herself．Soon she saw a little glass box near her on the floor．She opened it, and found a very small cake with the words EAT Me on it．

　　Nothing could surprise Alice now．
