　　A young passenger(乘客)was looking everywhere for his ticket because the conductor was coming to punch(剪)the ticket．He was looking for it in all the pockets of his coats and trousers．What surprised the other passengers most was that they found he had the ticket in his mouth．The conductor quickly pulled the ticket out of his mouth, punched it and gave it back to the young man．When the conductor moved on, all the other passengers couldn't help laughing．One of them said to him at last, "I'm sure you felt foolish just now, sitting there looking everywhere for your ticket when it was right in your mouth all the time．"

　　"Foolish?" answered the passenger, "I was chewing(嚼)the date off．"

　　Except for a few times, Americans are not big present-givers．There's no exchange of presents among business people, and if one American tries to give another a present, it may look like that he wants to bribe(贿赂)him．Americans have learned that in some other countries people like to give presents to others, but among ourselves we don't see the need for presents．

　　Even friends may never exchange presents．When I go to foreign countries, I try to bring back little things for close friends, but nobody would feel unhappy if I didn't．I don't often remember a friend's birthday, and few people outside of my family remember mine．If someone gave me presents too often, I'd get unpleasant．But a present from a foreigner - that kind from his or her homeland－won't go wrong, except to government employees(政府职员)who can't be given presents．

　　You usually open a present at once and in front of the person who gives it except Christmas and birthday presents．You should only say, "It's so nice．Thanks…" when you get Christmas or birthday presents．

　　You may want to bring a bottle of wine(葡萄酒)or flowers to a dinner party, but you're never asked to．Nobody will mind if you bring wine, but your friend may not use it that evening．

　　At Christmas we often give presents to our family and sometimes our friends．We also give presents to people who have been helpful during the year- doormen, babysitters, housecleaners, newspaper senders－anyone who has often helped us．

　　London is planning to host(主办)the 2012 Olympic Games．They will need to plan carefully．Local people are worried that plans were made carelessly and too quickly because the organizers wanted to win the bid．So, while some Londoners are excited about what will happen, others are more worried．The government is sure that the country will host a magnificent(宏伟的)Olympics．Here are just a few things some ordinary people said in the week following the bid．

　　——Paul Smith：It is really good news for the businesses in the area．London gets a lot of tourists anyway, but this will bring more．Local people are thinking of things to do that will make the area more fun over the Olympics and make money as well．

　　——David Ford：London is busy anyway．I'm not sure that the government will get the transport right．The underground and the buses are too full now．The underground is so full at rush hour that it is dangerous．It will be ten times worse in 2012．I 'm going to rent out(出租)my flat and go on holiday when the Games are happening!

　　——Pearl Armstrong：It's great! I We sport - it's exciting! I like to watch it and I like to play it．We will see all these great athletes(运动员)at the Games．It will be good afterwards, because the stadiums and swimming pools and so on will all still be there, so they will let us use them．

　　Jackson was driving back home along a road one evening．He just lost his job．It was winter and it was very cold, just like his feelings．

　　An old lady with her car was standing on one side of the road．She needed help．No one stopped to help her．Jackson stopped in front of her and got out of his car．The lady looked very worried．Even when he put a smile on his face, the old lady still looked worried．Was he going to hurt her? He didn't look safe, and he looked poor and hungry．

　　Jackson knew how she felt．He said．" I'm here to help you, madam．Why don't you wait in my car? By the way, my name is Jackson．"

　　The lady thought for a while and then went into his car．There was something wrong with her car．Jackson went under her car to repair it．When he finished, he got dirty and his hands hurt．Then the lady told him that her name was Annie．She asked Jackson how much she should pay for his help．

　　Jackson never thought about getting money．This was not a job to him．This was helping someone in need．He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she should give that person help．

　　A passenger told an air hostess that he needed a cup of water to take his medicine when the plane just took off．She told him that she would bring him the water in ten minutes．

　　The air hostess was kept so busy that she forgot to give him the water．As a result, the passenger was held up(延误)to take his medicine．Thirty minutes later, when the passenger’s ring for service sounded, she hurried over to him with a cup of water, but he refused(拒绝)．

　　In the following hours on the plane, each time the air hostess passed the passenger, she would ask him with a smile whether he needed help or not．But the passenger never answered a word．

　　When he was going to get off the plane, the passenger asked the air hostess to hand him the passengers’ booklet．She was very sad．She knew that he would write down sharp words, but with a smile she handed it to him．

　　Off the plane, she opened the booklet, and smiled, for the passenger put it．“On the flight, you asked me whether I needed help or not for twelve times in all．How can I refuse your twelve sincere smiles?”

　　That’s right! Who can refuse twelve sincere smiles from a person?

　　Everyone has worries．How do you deal with your worries? There is always something you can do to help yourself feel less worried．Sitting there worrying is no fun and it won't solve your problems．

　　Grades at school are often a top worry for kids．if you worry most about grades, ask yourself these questions：

　　●Why are grades important? What do grades mean to me?

　　●How do I get ready for class? Do I go over my notes even when there isn't a test?

　　●Do I have a good place to do my homework?

　　●Have I tried different ways of studying?

　　If your worry is about a fight you had with your friend, you might write down al! the things you could do-write a note to him or her, invite him or her to watch a basketball game, say sorry to him or her and so on．Once you have a list of things you could do, you can choose one thing that could get your friend back．

　　You can ask for help when you're worried．You can find someone to talk to, such as your parents, friends, and teachers．
