　　Many places in the world need more fresh(淡的)water．Every country is trying to find ways to turn salt water into fresh．

　　Why aren't there many factories like the Symi factory?

　　In some places, the sun is not hot enough．Or it does not shine every day．

　　In such places, other ways of heating sea water can be used．These ways cost more money, but they work faster than the sun．By boiling sea water with high heat, a lot of fresh water can be made quickly．

　　But heating is not the only way to get fresh water from salt water．Other ways are tried．

　　One way is freezing．The fresh part of salt water freezes first．To get fresh water, the bits of ice are taken out．

　　Which way is the best?The one that gives the most water for the least money．It may be a different way for each place．

　　Symi's way seems very good for small, hot places．It does not make very much water at a time．But the factory is easy to build and costs little．

　　That is why people in many dry places talk about Symi!

　　I have tried many ways to be ill．I don’t wear a sweater when I should, and two days ago I walked in the rain without my shoes．But so far nothing has happened．Debbie once told me about a boy in her class who milked being away from school．He would rub(摩擦)end of the thermometer (温度计)l it went up to 39℃．Then he’d put it in his mouth and his mother would think he was really ill．

　　This morning I was trying doing that but it never went above 35℃ and I rubbed it for ten minutes．So I held the thermometer next to the light on my desk and it went up to 40℃。I thought I’d put it in my mouth and walked downstairs like that．Then my mother would take it out and she would be worried when she saw that I was rather ill．

　　The only trouble was I didn’t know the thermometer would be so hot．As soon as I put it into my mouth I burnt my tongue(舌头)！I spat the thermometer out．It fell on the floor but it didn’t break．

　　I will have to think up a better way to get my mother and father back together．

　　It was a very hot summer morning but inside the pyramid(金字塔)it was very cool．Tom and his classmates had just walked into the pyramid and surprised to see what it was like．

　　They went to the Queen’s Room．They saw a passage(通道)．At the end of it there was a small room．They were told that they couldn’t go into that room, because it was newly found．Tom looked toward the passage．Two of his friends Jason and Peter saw him and said, “don’t get into trouble, Tom!” as soon as nobody was looking, Tom went up the dark passage, opened the door and walked in．Suddenly the door closed and behind him．The room was very dark, but luckily Tom had brought a torch(手电筒)with him．When he turned it on, he saw two white faces in front of him．“Oh, no!” he cried and ran to the door．He quickly opened it and went down the passage to the Queen’s Room as fast as he could．

　　As soon as Tom disappeared, Jason and Peter took the piece of white cloth off their faces and walked slowly down the passage．They couldn’t stop laughing．“that will teach him a lesson,” said Jason．

　　In western countries, especially in America, some social customs have lasted still today．For example, ladies first, that is to say, women in those countries are respected in many ways．

　　In the U．S．and Europe, you will see men usually open doors for women and women generally walk ahead of men into a room or a restaurant unless the man have to be ahead of the ladies to choose the table, to open the door of a car or to give other services．On the street, men almost walk or across the street on the side of the ladies which is closer to traffic, but if a man walks with two ladies, he should walk between them．

　　In Ghana, dinner is usually from four in the afternoon to six in the evening．But there are no strict rules(规则)about time．Whenever a guest arrives, a family offers food．When you go to a home, the person who receives guests takes you to the living room first．At this time everyone welcomes you．Then you go to the dinning room．There you wash your hands in a bowl of water．All the food is on the table．

　　In Ghana you usually eat with your fingers．You eat from the same dish as everyone else．But you eat from one side of the dish only．It is not polite to get food from the other side of the dish．After dinner, you wash your hands again in a bowl of water．

　　Most meals in Ghana have a dish called fufu．People in Ghana make fufu from the powder(粉末)of some plants．Sometimes they cut the fufu with a saw(锯子)because it is very hard．You must chew(咀嚼)fufu well, or you may get sick．You eat fufu with the fingers of your right hand only．
