　　Take a class at Dulangkou School, and you’ll see lots of things different from other schools．You can see the desks are not in rows and students sit in groups．They put their desks together so they’re facing each other．How can they see the blackboard?There are three blackboards on the three walls of the classroom!

　　The school calls the new way of learning“Tuantuanzuo”, meaning sitting in groups．Wei Liying, a Junior 3 teacher, said it was to give students more chance to communicate．

　　Each group has five or six students, according to Wei, and they play different roles(角色)．There is a team leader who takes care of the whole group．There is a“study leader”who makes sure that everyone finishes their homework．And there is a discipline(纪律)leader who makes sure that nobody chats in class．

　　Wang Lin is a team leader．The 15-year-old said that having to deal with so many things was tiring．

　　“I just looked after my own business before,”said Wang．“But now I have to think about my five group members．”

　　But Wang has got used to it and can see the benefits(好处)now．

　　“I used to speak too little．But being a team leader means you have to talk a lot．You could even call me an excellent speaker today．”

　　Zhang Qi, 16, was weak in English．She used to get about 70 in English tests．But in a recent test, Zhang got a grade of more than 80．

　　“I rarely(很少)asked others when I had problems with my English．But now I can ask the team leader or study leader．They are really helpful．”

　　Last year, we spent Christmas and New Year in Queensland, Australia．The beaches there were beautiful, and we spent a lot of time playing by the sea, swimming and surfing．One day, we were on a beach just south of a city called Cairns．My little siste was looking for shells in the sand down near the waves when she shouted to me,“Hey, Lan!Look what I’ve found!”I ran down to have a look, and saw her pointing at a strange black object that was half buried(掩埋)in the sand,“What is it?”she asked．I said I didn’t know．

　　Just then, my father came over,“Are you enjoying yourselves, you two?”he asked．Then he saw the strange black thing．“What’s that?”he said, bending down to take a closer look．Suddenly, he said,“Quick kids, get away from here．Go and play somewhere else．”

　　We went and played further down the beach, while Dad ran up to the shop near the beach to make a phone call．About 20 minutes later, we heard the noise of cars and trucks arriving, and a lot of soldiers ran onto the beach．They told everyone to leave the beach and stay away from it．

　　About half an hour later, we were sitting with Dad in a café a few hundred metres from the beach, when we heard an enormous explosion(爆炸)．“What was that?”we asked Dad．“That was the thing you found,”he said．“One of the soldiers down there told me it was a Japanese bomb(炸弹)from World War II．Sometimes they get washed up on the beaches here．”

　　Bicycles are very popular around the world today．People ride their bicycles for exercise and enjoyment．In some places, people use a bicycle to get to work．In other places, bicycle riding is a very popular exercise to people who live in cities．But who invented the first bicycle?In 1791, a Frenchman named Comte de Sivrac invented and owned the first bicycle．Mrs．Sivrac rode(骑)the bicycle in Paris．The handles(把手)and the seat were wooden．This bicycle was very difficult to move．A rider even had to pick up the front wheel to change direction．Finally, the bicycle had no brakes for stopping or pedals for the feet!Riding a bicycle was a great risk．

　　In 1817, a German named Baron von Drais de Sauerbrun made the first bicycle better．The seat became more comfortable．The wheel could now change direction．His ride in the forest took only one hour instead of three hours on foot, which surprised people at that time．

　　Sauerbrun brought this kind of bicycle from Germany to France．Then Denis Johnson, an Englishman, made a bicycle for women．It had space for their dresses to hang down．But these bicycles still had no brakes or pedals, and riders often got hurt．These bicycles and the people who rode them were not very popular．

　　It took another forty-five years for the bicycle to become popular．More than 100 years later, bicycle riding is more popular than ever．In fact, in India and China, there are still many more bicycles than ears．

　　When Wayne Mix was a child in the 1930s, his family sent him to a school for the deaf and blind．He learned American Sign Language．With American Sign Language, deaf people use their hands to communicate．They can spell words with their fingers, or they can use signs for whole words．Wayne communicated with teachers and friends in sign language．He graduated at the age of 20．In those days, people who were deaf did not get jobs and were not part of the community(社区), so Wayne went back to the family farm．His family did not know sign language, so Wayne communicated a little by making simple motions(手势)with his hands．He was never able to tell them his thoughts and feelings．

　　Wayne's father died in 1971．There was no place for Wayne to live, so they sent him to Mountain Meadows nursing home．He was only 51 and much younger and healthier than the other people in the nursing home, but he was treated like the 80 and 90-year-old people because he did not hear or speak．No one knew that Wayne was able to use sign language．

　　Twenty-nine years passed slowly and silently for Wayne．Then one day he saw a visitor using sign language with her deaf mother during a visit to the nursing home．He walked up to them and signed,“I’m Wayne Mix．”

　　Suddenly everything changed for Wayne．He found many people who knew sign language．These people communicated through sign language, e-mail, television with subtitles and a special telephone that prints(打印)the words that are spoken．It was a whole new world for Wayne．Now he could tell people his feelings, his needs, and his thoughts．

　　The people in Wayne's town were sad about the thousands of days in Wayne's life when no one knew that he could communicate．They wanted to help Wayne to do some of the things he always wanted to do．The workers at the nursing home found out that as a young man he loved to swim, and he loved to see pictures of dolphins swimming．When he started signing again, they asked him where he wanted to go．“Water．”Wayne signed．

　　Mountain Meadows workers had an idea．“Let’s send Wayne to Sea World in San Diego．”They told other people in town about their idea．Many people in Wayne's town and in other states gave money to help Wayne make the trip．The people at Sea World were very kind to Wayne．They let him swim with the dolphins and help them feed all the sea animals．Newspapers wrote about Wayne, so many people gave money to buy him a special TV and a telephone set．These were things Wayne never knew about before．

　　FIFTEEN YEAR-OLD Liu Xuyang said he has more than 30 pairs of shoes．But some are old．He doesn’t want them any more．

　　Where should these old shoes go?To the garbage or to be recycled?

　　This is bow Liu began to care about old shoes．He shared his thoughts with his classmates at Beijing No．35 Middle School, Luo Hao and Yang Mengwei．The three then decided to do some research．They found out that old shoes can pollute the environment if not recycled properly．Earlier this month, their research paper won second prize in the Beijing Youth Science and Invention Competition．

　　The three first spent two weeks designing a questionnaire on how people deal with old shoes and how the shoes are treated．They gave over 100 questionnaires to the public, to shoemakers, garbage stations and recycling stations．

　　Doing the survey, They found that on average(平均), a family throws away 5.17 pairs of shoes each year．That means millions of old shoes are thrown away a year around the country．

　　However．most old shoes are not treated properly, according to the students．

　　“Usually．the old shoes are just burnt or buried(填埋)with other garbage,”said Luo．

　　Most of the shoes are made of chemical materials．If they are burnt or buried, they can give off gas(气)or other things that pollute the air and rivers, said the students．

　　They suggest there should be big boxes in cities f6r people to put old shoes in．The shoes could then be taken to recycling stations to be treated．

　　On the other hand, the shoemakers, said the students, could use more environment-friendly material to make shoes．

　　French doctors and American scientists have reported doing an operation in which the doctor was outside the operating room．This kind of operation is known as robotic operation．

　　Doctor Marescaux did the operation in an office in New York City last month, while a sixty-eight-year-old woman patient was in a hospital in Strasbourg, France．

　　A doctor in Strasbourg got the patient ready．He placed medical tools and a small video camera in her stomach area．Doctor Marescaux in New York watched the patient on a video screen．Then he used the computer to send messages to the robot machine．The robot moved the tools that cut the woman’s gallbladder(胆囊)away．The woman got well soon after the operation and left the hospital two days later．

　　Experts say the main problem with such a robotic operation is based on high-speed telecommunications between the doctor and the robot．Technology must be able to send a doctor’s order to a robot to move the tools quickly．

　　Experts also say a successful robotic operation will improve an operation．For example, the robot can make much smaller movements than a person can．A robot machine can turn tools in ways that a doctor’s hand cannot．

　　Doctors say such a robotic operation will make possible safer and better operations in the future．They say it will improve doctor training．It will also mean that doctors could do an operation on people in dangerous places far away．And it could mean that people could have operations done by top doctors without having to travel to the city where doctors work．
