　　It is reported that many middle school students are just not getting enough sleep, especially during the school week．The problem seems to get worse as they get older．Year 7 students sleep 8.4 hours in a school night, and Year 9 students only 6.9 hours．

　　It's also reported that not getting enough sleep can cause problems in a student's life．

　　Many students fall asleep in school or while doing their homework, so it is not surprising that they get lower grades than those who get enough sleep．Scientists suggest nine hours a night for middle school students．

　　Of the students who feel unhappy and nervous, 73％do't get enough sleep at night．

　　Why aren't students getting enough sleep? Many students have one of the following things, like telephone, television, or computer, in their bedrooms．Using them on a school night not only takes their time away from homework, but also makes it difficult for them to fall asleep．As a result, many students can't fall asleep before 11 P.m., yet they must get up early to go to school．

　　Scientists also suggest students should not do exciting activities for an hour before bedtime．

　　“I’m hungry,” said Kelly as she and Sheila walked home from school．

　　“You’re always hungry,” Sheila said, “We’ll have something when we get to my house．”

　　Kelly looked at Sheila, who was walking quickly down the sidewalk．Sheila had long, beautiful red hair and always wore nice clothes．Kelly had short hair and many of her clothes were hand-me-downs．

　　No one was home when they got to Sheila’s house．No one ever seemed to be home at Sheila’s house．Kelly had two sisters and a brother．“It must be amazing to have the whole house to yourself．I’m lucky if I can be alone for five minutes,” said Kelly．

　　“Well, I can do whatever I want．Do you want to order a pizza? There’s nothing in the fridge．”There was never anything in Sheila’s fridge．

　　“That’s okay,” said Kelly．“I have to go home for dinner soon．”

　　“But I would go crazy if people were telling me what to do all the time．”

　　“Well, you’re lucky,” said Kelly．Sheila was lucky．She had perfect hair, perfect clothes, a perfect house．“I would give anything to be Sheila for just one day,” thought Kelly．

　　The phone rang．“Hi, Mom,” Kelly heard Sheila say．“No, it’s okay．I understand．”She hung up．“My mom’s having dinner out again,” she said．“Are you sure you can’t stay for pizza?”

　　“Sorry．I have to go or I’ll be late for dinner,” said Kelly．

　　“Whatever．See you．”

　　Kelly saw Sheila looking out of the window as she walked down the street．Suddenly, Sheila’s house looked very big, and Sheila looked very small．

　　New York State has passed the USA’s first state law banning(禁止)motorists talking on cell phones．The ban will begin on November 1, although drivers caught using cell phones will be given only warnings during the first month．

　　First-time violators(违法者)will face a ＄100 fine．A second time call for a ＄200 fine and every violation after that will cost ＄500．

　　At least a dozen localities have established(制定)bans, starting in 1999; and 40 states have had bans proposed but not passed．At least 23 countries, including the Great Britain, Italy, Israel and Japan, ban drivers from using cell phones．

　　There are about 115 million cell phones in use in the United States and more than 6 million in New York State．

　　“To think that I’m not going to use cell phone when at the same time I can still use my laptop(手提电脑), I still can read a paper, I can still change my pants while driving at 65 mph．I think there’s just something wrong,”an official said．

　　Maybe you know floods, droughts, earthquakes, sandstorms and so on．But have ever heard of typhoons?

　　Typhoons are some of the worst storms, usually around the Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea．Most happen in July, August and September．

　　How does a typhoon happen?When lots of sea water gets hot in the summer sun, it evaporates into the air．This makes the air hotter．When the air gets warm enough, it starts to move higher up into the sky．Then, cooler air around it rushes in．It fills the space that is left．After the air gets warmer, it starts to move quickly, making wind．The wind goes in circles, and it keeps moving higher in the sky．The warmer the air gets, the quicker the wind moves．And when the wind moves faster than 30 meters a second, a typhoon begins．

　　A typhoon has two parts, One is called the“eye”．In the eye, the wind does not move so fast．The other part is the wall of clouds around the eye．This is where the strongest with and hardest rains are．

　　Typhoons are very dangerous．In 2004, Typhoon Yunna killed 164 people in Zhejiang, and 24 people were missing．In May 2006, Typhoon Pearl hir Guangdong and Fujian, and thousands of houses were damaged．

　　What to do when a typhoon hits

　　Stay inside, Close all the windows and stay away from them．

　　Try to bring all of your things inside．Strong winds could even blow away your bikes!

　　Listen to the radio or TV for important information．

　　If you’re told to go to a safer place, do so right away．
