Dou Kou, a Chinese boy, is called “the youngest writer in the world”．He has written three books till now．Dou Kou was born in Jiangsu in 1994．When he was 7 months old, his partents started working in over 30 different cities, such as Xi’an and Shenzhen．This kind of life gave him things to think and write about．When he was 9 months old, he could speak and at the age of one, he could say five to six hundred words．At three, he could look up words in the dictionary．At four, his father taught him how to learn by himself．His parents like reading very much．So does he．At the age of 5, he began writing fairy tales．At the age of 6, he wrote a novel about his life in different cities with his parents．His fairy tales are all from his life．One day, he found many mice in the house．They only ate their food but also hurt his mother’s hand．So he thought, “If we give mice the stomach of cows, they will eat grass and they will be helpful to people．” This was his first fairy tales Change Stomach for Mice．Now he studies well in a middle school．He has written his third book, the novel called Eyes of Children．He says, “I am not different from other children．I just wrote several books．

　　My class will put on a short play in English at the end of the year．Yesterday our English teacher gave us copies of the play．

　　“Choose a character in the play whom you’d like to be, ”she told us．“This afternoon learn a few lines of this part for homework．Then tomorrow you can say those lines in front of the class．Ill decide who play each part．”

　　I wanted to have one of the bigger parts in the play, so I choose the part of the king．He has a lot of lines to say．I learned them by heart．

　　This morning in our English lesson we had to say our lines．I acted the part of the king．When I said my lines, I put a lot of expression into my acting．I thought I acted really well．

　　Everyone in the class read a part and then the teacher who would play each part．

　　Many of the students in my class couldn’t act at all．They couldn’t even read without making lots of mistakes．I was sure that I would get a big part in the play．

　　However, the teacher gave me the part of a soldier．He has only one line．It is, “Yes, sir!”

　　I was very disappointed．At the end of the lesson I went up to her and asked her why I had such a small part．

　　“You put too much expression in your acting,” she said．“Good acting is not big acting．It is acting the audience can believe in．”

　　I think I know what she means．

　　A doctor was once teaching a class of medical students at a famous hospital in Edinburge．An injured man was brought in, and the doctor turned to one of his students and asked him, “What’s wrong with this man?”

　　“I don’t know, sir,” the student answered．“Shall I examine him and find out?”

　　“There’s no need to examine him,” said the doctor．“You should know without asking questions．He has hurt his right knee．Didn’t you notice the way he walked? He hurt it by burning it in the fire．You see his trousers leg is burnt away at the knee．This is Monday morning．Yesterday was fine, but on Saturday the roads were wet and muddy．The man’s trousers are muddy all over．The man fell down on Saturday night．”

　　The doctor then turned to the man and said, “You had your pay on Saturday and went to a public house and drank too much．You got muddy and wet on the way home．Because you had drunk too much, you fell on the fire and burnt your knee．Is that right?

　　“Yes, sir,” said the man．

　　Most people around the world are right-handed．This also seems to be true in history．In 1799, scientists studied works(作品)of art made at different times from 1, 500 B．C．to the 1950s．Most of the people shown in these works are right-handed, so the scientists guessed that right-handedness has always been common through history．Today, only about 10％ to 15％ of the world's population is left-handed．

　　Why are there more right-handed people than left-handed ones? Scientists now know that a person's two hands each have their own jobs．For most people, the left hand is used to find things or hold things．The right hand is used to work with things．This is because of the different work of the two sides of the brain(大脑)．The right side of the brain, which makes a person's hands and eyes work together, controls(控制)the left hand．The left-side of the brain, which controls the right hand, is the centre for thinking and doing problems．These findings show that more artists should be left-handed, and studies have found that left-handedness is twice as common among artists than among people in other jobs．

　　No one really knows what makes a person become right-handed instead of left-handed．Scientists have found that almost 40％ of the people become left-handed because their main brain is damaged(损害)when they are born．However, this doesn't happen to everyone, so scientists guess there must be another reason(原因)why people become left-handed．One idea is that people usually get right-handed from their parents．If a person does not receive the gene(基因)for right-handedness, he/she may become either right-or left-handed according to the chance(偶然性)and the people they work or live with．

　　Though right-handedness is more common than left-handedness, people no longer think left-handed people are strange or unusual．A long time ago, left-handed children were made to use their right hands like other children, but today they don't have to．

　　Bamboo(竹子)is one of nature's(自然)most surprising plants．Many people call this plant a tree, but it is a kind of grass．

　　Like other kinds of grass, a bamboo plant may be cut very low to the ground, but it will grow back very quickly．A Japanese scientist reported one bamboo plant which grew 1.5 metres(4 feet)in 24 hours! Bamboo grows almost everywhere in the world except Europe．There are more than 1, 000 kinds of bamboo．

　　Not all bamboo looks the same．Some bamboo plants are very thin．They may only grow to be a few centimetres wide while others may grow to more than 30 centimetres(1 foot)across．This plant also comes in different colours, from yellow to black to green．

　　Bamboo has been used to make many things such as hats and kitchen tools(厨房用具)．Because it is strong, bamboo is also used to build buildings．

　　Many Asian countries have used bamboo for hundreds of years．They often use bamboo for buildings and supporting(支撑)new buildings and bridges while they are being built．

　　In Africa, poor farmers are taught how to find water using bamboo．These African countries need cheap way to find water because they have no money, and their fields often die from no rain and no water．Bamboo pipes(管子)help poor farmers bring water to their thirsty fields without spending a lot of money．
