　　China’s worst drought in fifty years is doing harm to most of the country’s south．Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, Anhui and Jiangsu provinces have suffered the most because of little rain．35 million people have been affected by the big thirst, according to China’s Ministry of Civil Affairs．4 million of them cannot get safe drinking water．

　　Dongting Lake in Hunan has now become smaller by two thirds．Gao Yibing, fisherman, said, “No eggs were produced, so there’s no young fish．We would not be able to fish anything in autumn and winter．”

Part Two

　　Medecims Sans Frontieres, or Doctors Without Borders, is a group that helps people in need．In 1971,some French doctors and journalists formed MSF．In 1999,MSF won the Nobel Peace Prize．

　　Doctors of MSF go to different countries to help poor people for free．These people are sick and hurt．They do not have enough money, food or water．MSF work in more than 70 countries including Iraq and Sudan．There are wars, disasters or diseases in these countries．

　　MSF doctors treat these sick people and speak out for them．They try to tell the world about what they see in the poor countries．This makes the world pay more attention to these places．

　　Chris is not a traditional explorer(探险家)－he usually works in an office for a large organization．However, Chris' job can be just as exciting and dangerous as being an explorer．

　　But why would doctors leave a comfortable life and a good pay to join MSF? According to Chris, the experience they have is a great help in their life．What's more, just like the explorers of the past, they need to keep an open mind and learn to get on well with the people they meet．One thing that they can say at the end of any task is that they have made a real difference to people’s lives．

　　For a long time being happy was considered natural，and there was nothing special to do about it．Now we know that we can work at getting along well with other people．It is possible to act in such a way that other people will like us better．

　　One way is being unselfish，not wanting everything your own way or asking for the best share of everything, including the attention of your friends．Another way is to look for good points, not bad ones in other people．

　　You don’t have to be spineless(无骨气的)in order to be popular．In fact，you will be liked and respected(尊重)if you are not afraid to stand up for your rights(权利)．But do it politely and pleasantly．One way to develop a good character is being friendly and polite to your own group,　to older people，to strangers and especially to those who do not look important or do not interest you．

　　You cannot expect to be perfect,　so you must learn not to be too unhappy when you make a mistake．Everyone makes mistakes, and no one is to be blamed unless he refuses to learn from them．Many young people become discouraged(泄气的)when they know their unpleasant qualities－selfishness，laziness，etc．Just remember that we all have some of these faults and have to fight against them．

　　When sometMng is wrong，it is best to try to make it right．Perhaps you don’t like a teacher or a classmate．Try to see why，and look at yourself，too．Make sure that you are not doing something to make others dislike you．In time, things may turn out all right, then you simply have to learn to get along the best you can with the situation, without thinking too much about it．Worrying never helps in a situation you can’t change．

　　It was the last day of final examinations at a large college．On the steps of one building, a group of engineering students were discussing the exam that was ahout to begin．On their faces was confidence．This was their last exam before they graduated(毕业)and found jobs．

　　Some talked of jobs they already had，others of jobs they would get．With four years of college study，they felt ready and able to conquer(征服)the world．

　　The coming exam，they knew，would be easy．The professor(教授)had said they could bring any books or notes they wanted，but they couldn’t talk to each other during the test．

　　They walked into the classroom．The professor passed out the papers．The students’ smiles became wide as they saw that there were only five essay-type questions．

　　Three hours passed and the exam came to an end．Then the professor began to collect the papers．The students no longer looked confident．They seemed worried．No one spoke as the professor faced the class with the papers in her hand．

　　She looked at all the worried faces in front of her, and then asked，“How many students completed all five questions?”

　　Not a hand was put up．

　　‘‘How many of you answered four?” Still no hands．

　　“Three? Two?” The students moved restlessly in their seats．

　　“One，then．Certainly somebody finished one．”But the class stayed silent．The professor put down the papers．“That is just what I expected，”she said．

　　“I just wanted to make sure you realize that even though you have studied engineering for four years, there are still many things about the subject you don’t know．Instead of testing you on what you learned in this class, I’ve given you questions that skilled engineers face in the world outside the classroom．You can’t expect to be an expert(专家)on the day you graduate．You have to learn as you go．”

　　Then，smiling, she added，“You will all pass this course, but remember that your education has just begun．’’

　　In general, it's hard to spend enough time in both concentrating on lessons and taking part in social activities．But I wanted to succeed in both．I knew this would be a challenge but I didn't realize how difficult it was until my classes in the high school began,

　　I got on well with other girls．After school, I often had ice cream with them first instead of finishing my homework before it was time to hand it in, I always finished it the next day between classes．I knew it wasn't very good and the grades that I got showed I was not hard-working enough．I realized that I needed to find some kind of balance．

　　So I created a timetable that would divide my time between studying and relaxing．It was a good idea but I was only able to follow it for a few days because it made me under too much pressure．

　　Later, I tried another plan．Each week I listed everything that I had to get done during the week and the time by which I had to get it done．Then under the things I had to do, I made another list of things that I could do if I had time．

　　It worked really well．Ever since I have never missed any important things．At the same time, I enjoyed my spare time a lot．

　　Planning my time has been challenging, but I continue to do it．I'm glad that I've learned to balance things and it has helped prepare for what is coming after graduation．

　　people in Bed ZED have done many things．They recycle their paper, plastic, glass and other daily things．They build many houses whose windows face south in order to get as much sunlight as possible．The rainwater is collected for use in the toilets．Also, the people there travel to work in shared cars or use public transportation if they work far away．

　　Now, you may think it's not easy to live such a life, but let me tell you．it's not! It's a way of life．We just have to say no to what is bad for the environment, and begin working on ideas to protect it．Life would be much more pleasant if villages like Bed ZED existed(存在)all over the world!
