　　First it was an earthquake．Then came a terrible tsunami．These natural disasters killed thousands of people in Japan on Mar．11, 2011．Then a nuclear crisis(核危机)put the island in danger and shocked the world．

　　Damaged by the earthquake and tsunami, Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant(福岛第一核电站)has put out dangerous radioactive(放射性的)materials．Experts from several countries are working to control the crisis．

　　Although the reports say the leak so far will not cause huge health problems, people are worrying about nuclear safety．Switzerland has stopped plans to build new nuclear plants．Germany raised questions about its nuclear future．

　　As for China, the government has suspended approving(暂停审批)new nuclear power stations and stepped up safety checks at existing plants, Xinhua reported．But it is reported that all nuclear power stations in China are safe．

　　A nuclear power plant creates electricity．It is a clean energy source．In 1954, the world's first nuclear power plant was built in Russia．From then on, nuclear power has been widely used．

　　But nuclear power plants have hidden problems．If radioactive materials get into the air or water, they can pollute soil and plants and harm humans and animals．Nuclear accidents, such as the Chernobyl(切尔诺贝利)disaster in 1986 in the Ukraine, have caused great damage to the nearby people and the environment．

　　Will there be another choice for energy that we can use in the future? In recent years, scientists have found ways to make electricity from sunshine, wind and garbage．

　　Some scientists say hydrogen(氢气)may be used to create power．Hydrogen is a clean resource to use, and will never disappear．Some car companies have already developed cars powered by hydrogen．But still, the technology for its production is only in early stages of development．

　　Comera is the only place in the world which has a whistle(口哨)language．We do not know how and why it began because we do not know the complete history of the island．But we can certainly imagine the reasons for the beginning of the whistle language．There are many deep valleys(峡谷)on the island．A person on one side of a valley can not easily shout to a person on the other side．But he can whistle and be heard．Some of the best whistlers can be heard from four miles away and the record is seven miles．The people who live on the island usually have good teeth, and this helps them to whistle well．They must also have good ears so that they can hear other whistlers．

　　We can understand why the whistle language continues．It is very useful on the island, and quite easy to learn．When somebody is hurt or ill, the whistle language takes the place of telephone．If the sick person is quite far away from the town, people pass the message from one to another．A boy guarding cattle(放牛)on a hillside whistles to a man fishing from his boat．The last one is able to describe the trouble fully and exactly to the doctor in town．People help one another in the same way when a car breaks or a cow is lost．

　　The whistle language is hundreds of years old, and probably it will continue to live on for hundreds of years more．Radio and TV often kill the special ways of speaking in the different parts of a country．But on Comera you are nobody if you cannot whistle．Perhaps soon after TV arrives on the island, the people there will be whistling the news and other facts and opinions．

　　He Junquan is a Chinese swimmer and has won many Paralympic(残奥会)gold medals．Born in Jingmen, Hubei province, He Junquan was a healthy boy．But one day at the age of three, he climbed up to the high－voltage electricity(高压线)box and lost both of his arms forever．He became a disabled boy!

　　From then on he learnt to do everything with his feet：writing, eating, getting dressed and taking things．Seeing other pupils swimming in the river, he jumped in, too．Without arms, he suffered a lot in the river at the beginning．But he finally learnt to balance himself in water and could swim much faster than the other pupils．Once he even saved a little boy who fell into the water and couldn't swim．His father was so happy to see that this son had a talent in swimming．

　　In 1995, He Junquan became a real swimmer．He practices swimming for more than four hours every day．Since 1996, he has won more than twelve gold medals of the world class．At the 2008 Summer Paralympics, he won a silver medal．Reporting on the competition at the 2008 Games, Will Swanton of the Sydney Morning Herald wrote：

　　“ The Water Cube has been a sight for sore(气愤的)eyes．China's He Junquan, with no arms, was leading the 50m backstroke(仰泳)final．…He came to the finish－ and had to crash into the wall with his head．As he slowed down to lessen(减少)the impact(撞击力), Brazilian Daniel Dias hit the wall first with a hand．You’ve never heard a silence like it．”

　　Thousands of animals can kill humans．So which are the deadliest?

　　That means which can probably cause the most deaths? Here are two ways to answer this question：

　　●Which animals have the deadliest poison(毒)?

　　Many consider the golden poison-dart frog the most poisonous(有毒的)animal on Earth．Scientists have determined that two micrograms(微克)of its poison could kill a human．It is said that the ink in a period weighs about six micrograms．This 5-centimeter-long frog has enough poison to kill 10-20 people．

　　Others think that the 5-meter-long box jellyfish is the most poisonous．In fact, its victims can die before they can get out of the water．One of these jellyfish can kill 60 adults．But in fact, these jellyfish have only caused about 100 reported deaths in the last 100 years．

　　Poisonous snakes like the Russell's viper and Indian Cobra come near the top of this list．Snakes kill at least 20,000 humans world yearly．

　　However, the mosquito(蚊子), a more common living things comes number one．Mosquitoes carry and spread(传播)diseases to over 700 million people every year．As a result, mosquito bites lead to over 3 million human deaths per year．That makes the mosquito, by far, the world's deadliest animal．

　　The little girl answered in a low voice, "After mum made me this dress, she went away．My dad says that she's up in heaven(天堂)now with Grandfather．"

　　Finally the woman realized why she was crying．She felt very sorry for the little girl and gently held the child in her arms．

　　Then suddenly the little girl did something a bit strange．She stopped crying, walked back from the woman and began to sing．She sang softly．It was the sweetest sound the woman had ever heard, almost like the song of a very small bird．

　　After the child stopped singing, she said to the lady, "My mum often sang that song to me before she went away, and she asked me to sing it whenever I started crying and it would make me stop．"

　　"See," she said loudly, "it did, and now my eyes are dry!"

　　Just before the lady wanted to go, the girl showed her a spot(印迹)on her dress, and said, "Right here is where my mum kissed(吻)my dress, and here," pointing to another spot, "and here is another kiss, and here, and here．Mum said that she put all those kisses on my dress so that I would forget my sadness．"

　　Then the lady realized that she wasn't just looking at a dress, no, she was looking at a mother．The mother knew that she was going away and would not be there to kiss away her daughter's hurts any longer．

　　So the mother gave all her love to her beautiful daughter and put it into this dress．Now her child was wearing it so proudly．

　　The lady no longer saw a little girl wearing a simple dress．She saw a child wrapped(包)in her mother's love．

　　When he is counting again, a friend of his passes, and George says to him “I leave my house with six donkeys, then I have five, then I have six again, and now I have only five! Look! One, two, three, four, five．”

　　“But, George,” says his friend, “You are sitting on a donkey fool．That is the sixth．And you are the seventh!”

　　Harry Mendis, a 15-year-old British schoolboy, had a long hiccup(打嗝)at the end of last month．

　　His hiccups began one Sunday lunchtime and lasted for two weeks．After the first week, Harry's parents took him to hospital, but it took another week for the doctors to cure(治愈)him．

　　Harry who is now back at school is talking about his hiccups．

　　“When I began to hiccup, I drank a glass of water, but that didn't work．That evening I had hiccups every four seconds．I tried many ways to stop them．I held my breath(屏住呼吸)and drank cold drinks．My father even tried to give me a shock, but that didn't work, either．After a week of sleepless nights, I went to hospital．The doctors couldn't find anything wrong．They gave me some medicine and my hiccups slowed down, but it was another week before the medicine worked completely(完全)and my hiccups stopped．”

　　Harry was very lucky．The world record(记录)holders is the American farmer Charles Smith, who hiccupped for 69 years and 5 months．He stopped hiccups in 1990 at last, but nobody knew why．
