　　The big Town Hall clock was striking midnight when Frank began to cross the bridge．The dark night air was cold and a little wet, and the street lamp gave little light．

　　Frank was anxious to get home and his footsteps rang loudly on the avenue．When he reached the middle of the bridge, he thought he could hear someone coming near behind him．He looked back but could see no one．However , the sound continued and Frank began to walk more quickly．Then he slowed down again , feeling shame(羞愧)at having acted so foolishly．There was nothing to fear in a town as quiet as this．

　　Just then , he heard short , quick steps closely behind him．By the time he reached the other side of the bridge , he could almost feel someone at his heels．He turned round and there stood a man in a large coat．A hat was pulled down over his eyes and very little of his face could be seen．Frank said something about the weather , trying to sound friendly and calm．The man did not answer but asked rudely where Oakfield House was．Frank pointed to a big house in the distance and the stranger continued his way．

　　Then Frank wondered why the stranger had wanted to find Oakfield House at such an hour．

　　He knew that the people who lived there were very rich．Almost without realizing what he was doing , he began following the stranger quickly．The man was soon outside the house and Frank saw him look up at the windows．A light was still on and the man waited until it went out．When about half an hour had passed , Frank saw him climb noiselessly over the wall and heard him drop on the ground on the other side．

　　Now Frank realized what was going to happen．He walked quickly and silently across the street towards a telephone box on the corner．

　　Sometimes I really wonder whether there is love between my parents．Every day they are very busy trying to make money．They don't act in the romantic ways that I read in books or I see on TV．They never say "I love you"．It's not their style．

　　One day, my mother was sewing(缝)a quilt(被子)．I silently sat down beside her．

　　"Mom, I have a question to ask you," I said after a while．

　　"What?" she replied, still working．

　　"Is there love between you and Dad?" I asked her in a very low voice．

　　My mother didn't answer right away．

　　I thought I had hurt her．At last I heard my mother say："Susan, look at this thread(线)．Sometimes it appears, but most of it disappears in the quilt．It makes the quilt strong．If life was a quilt, then love should be a thread．It can hardly be seen anywhere, but it's really there．Love is inside．"

　　The next spring．At that time, my father suddenly got very sick．My mother had to stay with him in the hospital for a month．

　　After they got back, my mother helped my father walk slowly down the road every day．My father had never been so gentle．

　　“Dad, how are you feeling now?”I asked him one day．

　　"Susan, don't worry about me．" he said．" I just like walking with your mom．

　　Once I thought love meant flowers, gifts and sweet kisses．Now, I know that love is a thread in the quilt of our life．Love is inside, making life strong and warm．

　　Tomb(坟墓)Sweeping Day, which falls on April 4 this year, is a traditional festival when Chinese remember and honor their ancestors．

　　On this day, people take food and paper money to visit the tombs of their elders．Grass is pulled, dirt is swept away, and the family lays out offerings．They pray to their ancestors for blessing．

　　In the tradition of folk religion, Chinese tombs are usually in woods or on mountains．It is believed that an area that faces south, with many pine(松树)trees, is a proper place for a tomb．People believe such a place will make the ancestors happy, and in return , they will look after the living family．

　　The Western world has different attitudes towards the dead．From about the 7th century tombs can only be placed on church ground．But from the late 18th century, many new cemeteries were set up outside old towns and cities．They were used instead of church grounds．

　　Today, almost all communities have cemeteries(公墓)．In the US and many European countries, modern cemeteries have many tombstones placed in open spaces．Trees, such as Willows,yews and flowers are often planted in a cemetery．Friends and family of the dead often leave flowers at their graves on major holidays and birthdays．

　　Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan said the government would do everything it can to minimize(使降到最低)the effects of the disaster．And in Washington, President Obama said the United States is ready to help the people of Japan．

　　The English Fashion recently asked people about their wonderful ideas and plans about things they could do．The magazine asked people the following question： "If you had all the money you wanted, what would you like to do? " About 500 people answered the survey question．

　　Almost half(49％)of the people in the survey said they would buy material things such as a bigger house or a better car．One fifth(20％)of the people said they would travel to the interesting or famous places．17％ answered that they would give money to someone else．They would donate money to a charity or to help poor people．More than half of the rest of the people(about 10％)said they would give money to help medical research．All the other people in the English Fashion survey said they would save money in the bank．They said they didn't know what they would like to do right now, but perhaps in a few years they would find a good use for the money．

　　"Lots of people think that if they buy bigger and better things, they will feel happier, " said Dr Mary Wilson, a sociologist at City University．" However, " she said, "this feeling will not last long．After a while, they won't be satisfied with them any longer．" Dr Wilson thinks the happiest people are those who make a change in people's lives that will last into the future．She thinks those people who give money to someone else or to medical research are thinking beyond themselves and their own needs at the moment．If they had all the money they wanted, they would make a difference in the world．
