　　The good news is that most troubled friendships can be mended．First, don't let your pride get in your way．Most of us can forgive each other when differences are brought out in the open．Second, apologize when you’re wrong-even if you’ve been wronged．Over the course of friendship, even the best people make mistakes．Sometimes, it may be best if the wronged person takes wrong．Third, see things from your friend's point of view．And finally, accept that friendships changes as our needs and lifestyles change．Making friends can sometimes seem easy．The hard part is keeping the connections strong during the nature ups and downs that have an effect on all relationships．My suggestion：Consider friendship an honor and a gift, and worth the effort to treasure and nurture(培养)．

　　If you are driving when an earthquake happens，stop the car if it's safe．Stay inside your car until the earthquake stops，and don't drive near bridges．Try not to stop by power lines or trees．These could fall and hurt you．

　　Everybody hates rats．But in the earthquake places of the world-Japan, Los Angeles, Turkey-rats will soon be man's new best friends．

　　What happens after an earthquake? We send in rescue(救援)dogs．Why? Because they can smell people．Dogs save lives．They help rescuers to find living people．But dogs are big and they can't get into small spaces．So now a new research project is using a smaller animal to save lives：the rat．

　　How does it work? First, the rat is trained to smell people．When this happens, the rat's brain gives a signal．This is sent to a small radio on its back, and then the rescuers follow the radio signals．When the rat's brain activity jumps, the rescuers know that someone is alive．The rat has smelled that person．

　　Although there are already robots which can do this job, rats are better．Christian Linster at Cornell University, New York, says, “ ‘Robot’ noses don't work well when there are other smells around．Rats are good at that．” Rats can also see in the dark．They are cheaper and quicker to train than dogs, and unlike robots, they don't need electricity．

　　The “ rat project” is not finished, but Julie Ryan of International Rescue Corps in Scotland says, “ It would be fantastic．A rat would get into spaces we couldn't get to and a rat would get out if it wasn't safe．” Perhaps for the first time in history, people will be happy to see a rat in a building(but only after an earthquake, of course．)

　　Two years went by．One day, his father said to the son, “You are going to the hospital, Son．Mother and I have someone who will donate the ears you need, but it's a secret．” The operation is a big success．Later he married and entered the diplomatic(外交的)service．One day, he asked his father, “Who gave the ears? Who gave me so much? I could never do enough for him or her．”

　　“You could, my son, ” said the father, “but the agreement was that you are not to know…not yet．”

　　The years kept their secret, but one of the darkest days did come．He stood with his father over his mother's casket(棺材)．Slowly, the father stretched forth(伸出)a hand

　　and raised the thick, reddish brown hair to reveal the mother had no outer ears．

　　"Mother said she was glad she never let her hair be cut, " his father whispered gently, "and nobody ever thought mother less beautiful, did they? "

　　Now it's possible that you have come across situations like these more than once in your life．In fact you probably did something you knew to be wrong one time or another．You may have excused yourself by saying, “ Gee, the crowd does it．” Well, let the crowd do it, but don't do it yourself．Learn to say “No”．

　　Develop your own standards(标准)and your own judgment．If you know the crowd is planning something you disagree to, you'd better take the courage to bow out in a polite way．You'll have the satisfaction of standing on your own two feet．

　　The English Fashion recently asked people about their wonderful ideas and plans about things they could do．The magazine asked people the following question: "If you had all the money you wanted, what would you like to do?" About 500 people answered the survey question．

　　Almost half (49％) of the people in the survey said they would buy material things such as a bigger house or a better car．One fifth (20％) of the people said they would travel to the interesting or famous places．17％ answered that they would give money to someone else．They would donate money to a charity or to help poor people．More than half of the rest of the people (about 10％) said they would give money to help medical research．All the other people in the English Fashion survey said they would save money in the bank．They said they didn't know what they would like to do right now, but perhaps in a few years they would find a good use for the money．

　　"Lots of people think that if they buy bigger and better things, they will feel happier," said Dr Mary Wilson, a sociologist at City University．" However," she said, "this feeling will not last long．After a while, they won't be satisfied with them any longer．" Dr Wilson thinks the happiest people are those who make a change in people's lives that will last into the future．She thinks those people who give money to someone else or to medical research are thinking beyond themselves and their own needs at the moment．If they had all the money they wanted, they would make a difference in the world．

　　Many years ago when people had no thermometers (温度计), they usually touched a thing to see how hot or cold it was．The following experiment shows how easy it was to make a mistake．

　　Take three glasses: the first one with very hot water, the second one with very cold water, and the third one with water at room temperature．Then you put a finger of one hand in the hot water, and a finger of the other hand in the cold water．You hold your fingers in the two glasses for a minute．Then you use each finger, one after another, to see how hot or cold the water in the third glass is．You will find that the water is warm to the finger that was in the cold water before, but the finger which was in the hot water will feel cold in the same glass of water．

　　That is why you must always find the temperature in a scientific way．You must not try to tell the temperature as it seems to you．

　　You will often make a mistake if you take something that seems to you for a real fact．For example, when you are going to an Amusement park by bus and you want to get there very quickly, it seems to you that your bus is going very slowly, slower than the other buses．But if it is Sunday and you have much free time, it seems to you all the buses and cars are going very fast．
