Hello Sandy,

　　We have just returned from our holiday．We went with our friends Edward Smith and his wife Tina to the Yorkshire Moors．This is a beautiful place．It is a natural park．There are lots of places to walk on the tops of the hills, miles of grassland with no people, just sheep and birds．

　　Edward, who had just come out of hospital, could not walk as far as be used to．However this meant that we walked in the mornings, and then stopped at a cafe for lunch each day, before returning to the place we live．Edward and I slept in front of the fire all afternoon, while the ladies went for another walk．Very pleasant!

　　I have taken lots of photos from the place we live, across the valley(峡谷)below us, of the morning sunrise, and the mist in the valley．Also, in England, the old steam powered trains(蒸汽火车)are very popular．I have taken many photos of the train and from it．

　　Yesterday we had the first snow of this winter．It is very early(we usually expect snow in January)．It rained all day, then snowed in the evening．Today we have bright sunshine!

　　Both Jenny and I are well I don’t know if I told you, in the last e-mail, that Jenny is now working in a hotel．Although she has to work hard, people there are nice and she is enjoying the work．

　　Life in the future will be different from life today．But what will the change be?

　　The population is growing fast．There will be many people in the world and most of them will live longer than people live now．

　　Computers will be much smaller and more useful and there will be at least one in every home．And computer studies will be one of the important subjects in school then．

　　People will work fewer hours than they do now and they will have more free time for sports, watching TV and travel．Travelling will be much cheaper and easier．And many more people will go to other countries for holidays．

　　There will be changes in our food, too．More land will be used for building new towns and houses for all the people．Then there will be less room for cows and sheep, so meat will be more expensive．Maybe no one will eat it every day．Instead they will eat more fruits and vegetables．Maybe people will be healthier．

　　Work in the future will be different, too．Dangerous and hard work will be done by robots．Because of this, many people will not have enough work to do．This will be a problem．

　　Catherine is a beautiful girl．She studied in a university in Sydney a year ago．When she left the city, she returned to the town where she was born．And she found work in a middle school．She teaches her students French there．She likes her work and sings and dances well．So she’s made many friends soon and most people in the town know her．She often takes part in all kinds of meetings and parties and she always sings or dances for the participants(与会者)．She spends a lot of time on it．Sometimes she goes to bed late and can’t get up on time．Of course she’s often late to go to work．Mr．Read, the headmaster(校长)，is strict with everybody．He always stands by the school gate when the first bell rings．Catherine has to tell him that her watch is slow．Yesterday the girl went to a birthday party of her friend．They all sang and danced and none of them remembered the time．She got home late at night．And this morning she got up late again．She hurried to school without breakfast, but Mr．Read was waiting for her at the gate．

　　“ I’m sorry, Mr．Read, ” said Catherine, “ My watch…”

　　“ Your watch is slow again, isn’t it?” The old man said angrily．“ I have to tell you either you change your watch, or I’ll change you!”

　　A good way to pass an exam is to work hard every day in the year．You may fail in an exam if you are lazy and don’t study for most of the year and then only work hard for a few days before the exam．

　　If you are studying to take an English exam, do not only learn the rules of grammar, but try to read stories in English and speak in English whenever you can．Then you will learn and know more English words．

　　A few days before the exam you should start going to bed early．Do not stay up late at night studying and learning things at the last moment．Before you start the exam, read over the question paper carefully．Try to understand the exact meaning of each question before you pick up your pen to write．When you have finished your exam, read over your answers, correct the mistakes if there are any and make sure that you have not missed out on anything．

　　Happiness is for everyone．You don’t need to care about those people who have beautiful houses with large gardens and swimming pools or those who have nice cars and a lot of money and so on．Why?Because those who have big houses may often feel lonely and those who have cars may want to walk on the country roads in their free time．

　　In fact, happiness is always around you if you put your heart into it．When you are in trouble at school, your friends will help you; when you study hard at your lessons, your parents are always taking good care of your life and your health; when you get success, your friends will say congratulations to you; when you do something wrong, people around you will help you to correct it．And when you do something good to others, you will feel happy, too．All these are your happiness．If you notice a bit of them, you can see that happiness is always around you．

　　Happiness is not the same as money．It is a feeling of your heart．When you are poor, you can also be very happy, because you have something else that can’t be bought with money．When you meet with difficulties, you can say loudly I’m very happy, because you have more chances to challenge yourself．So you cannot always say you are poor and you have bad luck．As the saying goes, life is like a revolving door．When it closes, it also opens．If you take every chance you get, you can be a happy and lucky person．

　　An acorn(橡子)is a seed, It holds food for a new plant, It holds life for a plant, Oak trees grow frown acorns(橡树果实)．

　　One day a squirrel(松鼠)ran across a yard, He ran to a big oak trees, He looked for acorns, When he found them, he hid the acorns in the ground．

　　It the winter, he dug up the acorns to eat, when spring came, one acorn was still in the ground, the spring rains, made the acorn soft．The sun made the ground warm, The acorn began to grow, A root went down．A small white shoot(芽)pushed up．The small white shoot pushed through the top of the ground．Two small leaves came out．They were oak leaves．

　　Another oak tree was growing, It would become a big tree some day, Its acorns would drop to the ground．Would another squirrel find them and plant another tree?

　　I feel very excited at the thought that in another week I’ll be with you again on holiday．

　　I enjoy my stay in England very much indeed．My host and my fellow-students are all very nice to me, but as they say in England, “There’s no place like home”, and I think you will feel this above all at Christmas time．

　　I’m leaving here early on Thursday, the 23^rd, and I will be arriving in Paris on Friday morning．So I will be home about lunch time．Please meet me at the station．In some of my earlier letters I have told you all about the other students here．Well, I want to ask my Canadian friend, Ken, to come and spend Christmas, and he has no friends in England except me．He is a very nice boy．Know you will like him and I feel sure he will enjoy Christmas with us．But I haven’t invited him yet．Please let me know soon if that’s all right．I’ve got some Christmas presents for you all, but I’m not going to tell you what they are, so it will be a surprise．

　　How are you all at home?I hope you are keeping well．Make sure that father always puts on his big coat when he goes out so that he will not catch a cold．We don’t want him ill for Christmas．
