The president and the election of president in USA

The president is the head of the nation and the Executive Branch in the USA and is chosen in a national election for a four-year term of office and may be reelected for a second term, but not to allow the third time. Long long ago people made fires from lightening(闪电). But they had to keep the fire burning, for they couldn't start it again if there was no lightening. Later, they found out hitting two pieces of stone together could make a spark (火花). The spark could fire dry leaves. In this way they could make the fire again if it went out. Then people also learned to make a fire by mbbing(摩擦). They made a hole on a piece of wood and put a smaller stick into the hole. They turned the stick again and again. After a few minutes they got a fire.

Years went by, people learned other ways to make a fire. Sometimes they used the heat from the sun. They held a piece of glass in the right way and made a piece of paper on fire.

Handshaking

Handshaking, though a European practice, is now often seen in big cities of China. Nobody knows exactly when the practice started in Europe. It is said that long long ago in Europe when people met, they showed their unarmed open hands to each other as a sign of amity. As time went on and trade in cities grew prosperously, this practice was later somehow revised and gradually finalized into shaking hands.

Do the Europeans shake hands wherever they go and with whomever they meet? No, sometimes the Chinese scholars abroad reach out their hands too often to be polite, especially when she is a woman. In fact some people in western countries stand even more on ceremony and are more reserved than some Chinese today.

Handshaking was first introduced into China after the overthrow of the Qing Dynasty at the beginning of last century. Thanks to Dr. Sun Yat-sun, many unknown and unforeseen practices were imported from Europe, for example, to work on weekdays and to have a day off on Sundays, the brushing of teeth, and handshaking. In old China, when people met or parted, they bowed to each other and cupped their own hands one in the other, moving them up and down several times in front of the chest to pay obeisance. Children have their own rules in playing games. They seldom need a referee(裁判)and rarely trouble to keep scores. They don't care much about who wins or loses, and it doesn't seem to worry them if the game is not finished. Yet, they like games that depend a lot on luck, so that their personal abilities cannot be directly compared. They also enjoy games that move in stages, in which each stage, the choosing of leaders, the picking-up of sides, or the determining of which side shall start, is almost a game in itself.

Grown-ups can hardly find children's games exciting, and they often feel puzzled at why their kids play such simple games again and again. However, it is found that a child plays games for very important reasons. He can be a good player without having to think whether he is a popular person, and he can find himself being a useful partner to someone of whom he is ordinarily afraid. He becomes a leader when it comes to his turn. He can be confident, too, in particular games, that it is his place to give orders, to pretend to be dead, to throw a ball actually at someone, or to kiss someone he has caught.

It appears to us that when children play a game they imagine a situation under their control. Everyone knows the rules, and more importantly, everyone plays according to the rules. Those rules may be childish, but they make sure that every child has a chance to win.

(1)What is true about children when they play games?

[ ]

AThey can stop playing any time they like.

BThey can test their personal abilities.

CThey want to pick a better team.

DThey don't need rules.

[ ]

Aplay well

Bwait for his turn

Cbe confident in himself

[ ]

AThey are not interested in games.

BThey find children's games too easy.

CThey don't need a reason to play games.

DThey don't understand children's games.

(4)Why does a child like playing games?

[ ]

ABecause he can be someone other than himself.

BBecause he can become popular among friends.

CBecause he finds he is always lucky in games.

DBecause he likes the place where he plays a game.

(5)The writer believes that ________.

[ ]

Achildren should make better rules for their games.

Bchildren should invite grown-ups to play with them.

Cchildren's games can do them a lot of good

Dchildren play games without reasons

Chanukah光明节

Every year between the end of November and the end of December, Jewish people around the world celebrate the holiday of Chanukah, the Festival of Lights. Chanukah begins on the 25th day of the month of Kislev, lasted for eight days, but the starting date on the western calendar varies from year to year. Jews celebrate Chanukah to mark the victory which Jews reclaimed the Jerusalem Temple 2300 years ago.

Long ago in the land of Judea there was a Syrian king, Antiochus. The king ordered the Jewish people to reject their God, their religion, their customs and their beliefs and to worship the Greek gods. There were some who did as they were told, but many refused. One who refused was Judah Maccabee. Judah and his four brothers formed an army. After three years of fighting, the Maccabees were finally successful in driving the Syrians out of Israel and reclaimed the Temple in Jerusalem. The Maccabees cleaned the building and removed the Greek Statues. On the 25th day of the month of Kislev, the job was finished and the temple was rededicated.

When Judah and his followers finished cleaning the temple, they wanted to light the eternal light, known as the Ner Tamid, which is present in every Jewish house of worship. Once lit, the oil lamp should never be extinguished.

Only a tiny jug of oil was found with only enough for a single day. The oil lamp was filled and lit. Then a miracle occurred as the tiny amount of oil stayed lit not for one day, but for eight days. The people had a torchlight parade in the Temple, which may also have contributed to the tradition of lighting candles on Chanukah.

In America, families celebrate Chanukah at home. They give and receive gifts, decorate the house, entertain friends and family, eat special foods, and light the holiday candles.
