In American school there is something called Homecoming Day(校友返校日). Many high schools and colleges with a football team have a homecoming game. This can be the most important thing of the year except Graduation of Commencement Day(毕业典礼日). Students plan Homecoming Day for many weeks in advance(预先).

Several days before Homecoming, students start to decorate the school. There are signs to wish luck to the team, and many other signs to welcome all the graduates. Many people still come to Homecoming twenty or thirty years after their graduation.

The members of school clubs build booths(摊位)and sell lemonade, apples and sandwiches. Some clubs help to welcome the visitors.

During the day people like to look for teachers that they remember from long ago. Often they see old friends and they talk together about those happy years in school.

Everyone soon comes to watch the football game. When the game is half over, the band comes onto the field and plays school songs.

Another important moment is when the Homecoming Queen or King appears. All the students vote a most popular student Homecoming Queen or King. It is a great honour(荣誉)to be chosen.

Homecoming is a happy day, but it is not perfect unless the football team wins the game. Even if the team loses, the students still enjoy Homecoming. Some stay at the school to dance, and others go to a party. For everyone it is a day worth remembering.

Many of the expressions using water haven't enjoyable meanings in English.

Water over the dam(水坝)” is another expression about a past event. It's something that finishes and it cannot be changed. The expression comes from the idea--water has run over a dam and it cannot be brought back again. When a friends is troubled by a mistake he has made, you might tell him to forget about it. You can say It's water over the dam.

Tipping in the West

Tipping customs in the West vary considerably from country to country,

from one part of a country to another, and from small town to large city. There are no absolute rules: most people give between 15 to 20 percent of the bill depending on how much service they have had, how many people have been involved, how long they have been at a place, how much they have enjoyed it and where they are.

Fifteen percent in big cities is OK; 20 percent means something a bit more than that. Outside major cities, 15 percent is still the commontip. And the normal tipping coin for small services is 25 cents.

People you DO tip in the West are: waiters, taxi drivers, porters, doormen, hatcheck girls. You also tip for personal services from barbers, shoeshine boys, beauty parlor attendants, and so on.

People you DO NOT tip include: customs officials and other government employees, mailmen, airline personnel, bus drivers, storeclerks, gas station attendants, receptionists, operators. Christmas is special and expensive for tipping. You should give the following people some tip: doormen, the superintendent of one's apartment house, the laundryman, newspaper boy, milkman, parking lot attendant, postman and barber. Matt Mason has seen the future--and it's fun. Mason likes thinking about how machines can make our lives easier by doing the work we hate, such as cleaning. He shows a hard floor cleaning system(系统)that's built into the wall: it will blow dirt to a part of the room where it will be collected by a vacuum(吸尘器). Then the system will drop some cleaner on the floor and an arm will mop(用拖把擦) it up. This may trouble you, says Kara, an expert in Mason's company. But you can program it to come on at 3 a m, and it will just wet-mop the floor for you.”

When it comes to the kitchen, Bruce Beihoff, another expert at Whirlpool, is sure that in a few years, robots will be doing most of the boring work, freeing us to relax. More than just fun, future kitchens will be environmentally friendly, he says. A new system will be built in the house which can recycle energy(能量)lost from your kitchen to make the whole home warm.

The fridge will be the center of the home, says Daniel Lee, a market expert. The fridge will have a touch screen(触摸屏幕)where you can watch TV, surf the Internet, check your e-mail, keep a shopping list and order vegetables. Your fridge is the first place you go in the morning and the last place at night, says Lee.

Ever wonder why a 1.9-meter man and a 1.6-meter woman have to cook meals on counters(工作台)of the same height. The height was decided over 50 years ago, according to the height of ordinary women, says Jane Langmuir, an expert of cooking machines. But times have changed. We have made a new counter where you press a button and it moves to whatever height you want. At the same time, Ted Selker at MIT's Counter lab has made the dishmaker which lets you make dishes and bowls out of plastics at home. After each meal, the dishes are changed straight back into plastics.
