　　Do you know what a cold is?Have you ever had a cold?When you have a cold, liquid runs out of your nose, and you are ill．A cold is not a bad illness, but it can cause serious illness．We call this illness“a cold” or“a cold in the head”, because people think that cold air causes illness．They say,“I went out of my warm house into the cold air．I felt cold．So I caught a cold．”

　　Many people catch cold in winter．But cold air does not always cause a cold．You catch a cold in summer when the air is not cold．In fact, germs cause a cold．The germs get into your mouth, or they get into your nose．Then you have a cold．

　　When you have a cold, do not go out and give it to other people．Other people do not want it．When you have a cold, stay in your house till you get well again．You will soon be well．

　　A grown-up dog needs two meals a day-not more．And it can eat meat, fish, rice and some other things, dogs like large bones, but don't give them chicken bones．Remember to give them much clean water．

　　Be careful when you have chosen a cat．It has two meals a day with some meat or fish．Cats drink a little milk every day．Sometimes give them vegetables to eat．Don’t forget that they need clean water to drink．

　　Like most English children, I learned foreign languages at school．When I made my first visit to the United States, I was sure I could have a nice easy holiday without any language problem．But how wrong I was!

　　A great French writer has said that we should help everyone as much as we can because we often need help ourselves．The small even can help the great．About this, he told the following story．

　　An ant was drinking at a small river and fell in it．She tried her best to reach the side, but she couldn’t move at all．The poor ant got too tired but was still doing her best when a big bird saw her．With a pity the bird threw a piece of wood．With it the ant reached the bank again．While she was resting and drying herself in the grass, she heard a man coming up．He was walking without shoes on his feet and carrying a gun in his hand．As soon as he saw the bird, he wished to kill her, and he would certainly do so, but the ant bit him in one of his feet and at that moment the bird flew away immediately．It was an animal much weaker and smaller than the bird herself that had saved her life．

　　Some people do not like anything to be out of place．They are not late for work; they return their books to the library on time; they remember people’s birthdays; and they pay their bills as soon as they arrive．Mr．Hill is such a man．

　　Leonardo da Vinci began painting the Mona Lisa in 1503．He was working on a special painting for a church at the time, but the church painting was not going well．An Italian businessman asked da Vinci to paint a picture of the businessman’s second wife．This is the woman who can be seen in the Mona Lisa．

　　The woman is sitting with her knees to the side．Her head is turned to look out of the painting．Her hands are held together in front of her．This way of sitting is now used by many artists when they are painting a picture of a man or woman today．

　　Television was not made by one person．It took many years and many different people to make television work．

　　A lot of work on television began in the 1930s．England set up the British Broadcasting Corporation(BBC)at this time, and in the United States, the National Broadcasting Company(NBC)and the Columbia Broadcasting System(CBS)began．

　　In 1936, CBS put 150 televisions into homes in New York City in order to see if all of the televisions were able to get a show at the same time．This first television show was Felix the Cat．

　　Much of the work underway at the BBC during the 1930s and 1940s came to an end because of World War II．After the war, the BBC fell behind work on television going on in the United States．England had to rebuild itself after the war．

　　By 1945, there were 10,000 televisions in homes in the United States．This number climbed to six million by 1950．Then the number shot up to 60 million by 1960．

　　Today, 98 percent of all homes in the United States and Canada have at least one television．People in the United States usually watch seven hours of television each day．These people also have the choice of watching free programs, cable television, satellite television, or programs from video cassette recorders(VCRs)．
