　　Peter was an English boy．His hobby was collecting stamps．He had stamps from many countries．Peter’s favourite stamp came from France．He had every French edition(版本)from 1960 to 2004 except a 1974 special edition stamp．It was very hard to find．He looked for it everywhere even in stores, at street markets and on the Internet．He asket his friends and relatives to help him．But nobody could find the stamp．It made Peter very sad．

　　“Don’t worry, Please have patience(耐心)，”his father said to him．“You’ll find it someday．”

　　“I hope so,” Peter said．

　　Peter also liked making friends．He had a penfriend named Victor who was in France．They wrote to each other every month．Victor knew Peter liked collecting stamps．One day Victor’s mother Laura gave him an old French stamp．It was a big, green one．He used it to post a letter to Peter．

　　As soon as Peter received the letter, he looked carefully at the stamp．He was very amazed to see that it was the 1974 special edition stamp．

　　Peter was to happy!He told the good news to his sister and his parents．

　　“You see,” his father said, “you did find your stamp in the end．So you know, it’s good to have two things in life．”

　　“What are they?” Peter asked．

　　“Friends and patience, ” his father answered．

　　Shenzhen is a city in South China．It is not very big, but it has attracted people of the whole country and the whole world as well．

　　Just about twenty years ago, it was only a small fishing village．There were not many people there．Most of them lived on fishing．Things have greatly changed since the 1980’s．It became the first special economic zone(经济特区)in China．

　　Because of the opening policy(政策)，economic changes between China and the outside world have increased greatly．People can come and go easily between Shenzhen and Hong Kong．Both foreigners and Chinese have built a lot of factories, companies and tourists’ attractions there．People all over the country have come to find jobs．Many of them have settled down in this new booming(兴起的)city．

　　Shenzhen is developing so fast that it has become a well－known metropolis(大都市)in China．

　　If you are like most people, your intelligence(智力)changes with the seasons, You are probably a lot sharper in the spring than you are at any other time of year．A famous scientist, Ellsworth Huntington(1876－1947), concluded(总结)that climate and temperature have an effect(作用)on your mental abilities(智力)．

　　He found that cool weather is much more favorable for creative(激活)thinking than summer heat．This does not mean that all people are less intelligent in the summer than they are during the rest of the year．It does mean, however, that the mental abilities of large numbers of people tend to be lowest in the summer．

　　Spring appears to be the best period of the year for thinking One reason may be that in the spring man’s mental abilities are affected(受影响)by the same factors(因素)that bring about great changes in nature．

　　Fall is the next-best season, then winter．As for summer, it seems to be a good time to take a long vacation from thinking．

　　Jack went to a barber’s shop and had his hair cut, but when he came out, he was not happy with the result．When his friend Bob saw him, he laughed and said, “What has happened to your hair, Jack?”

　　Jack said, “I tried a new barber’s shop today, because I wasn’t satisfied with my old one, but this one seems even worse．”

　　Bob agreed．“Yes, I think you’re right, Jack．Now I’ll tell you what to do when you go into a barber’s shop next time：look at all the barber’s hair, find out whose hair looks worst, and then go straight to him．”

　　“Why shall I go to him?” Jack asked．“But that would be foolish!”

　　“Oh, no, it wouldn’t,” answered Bob．“Who cut that man’s hair?Just think it．He couldn’t cut it himself, could he?Another of the barbers cut it．So you know he can’t be the worst barber．”

　　It was Monday．Mrs．Smith’s dog was hungry, but there was not any meat in the house．

　　Considering that there was no better way, Mrs．Smith took a piece of paper, and wrote the following words on it, “Give my dog half a pound of meat．” Then she gave the paper to her dog and said gently：“Take this to the butcher(*person whose job is selling meat)．and he’s going to give you your lunch today．”

　　Holding the piece of paper in its mouth, the dog ran to the butcher’s．It gave the paper to the butcher．The butcher read it carefully, recognized that it was really the lady’s handwriting and soon did it as he was asked to．The dog was very happy, and ate the meat up at once．

　　At noon, the dog came to the shop again．It gave the butcher a piece of paper again．After reading it．he gave it half a pound of meat once more．

　　The next day, the dog came again exactly at noon．And as usual, it brought a piece of paper in the mouth．This time, the butcher did not take a look at paper, and gave the dog its meat, for he had regarded the dog as one of his customers．

　　But, the dog came again at four o’clock．And the same thing happened once again．To the butcher’s more surprise, it came for the third time at six o’clock, and brought with it a third piece of paper．The butcher felt a bit puzzled．He said to himself, “This is a small dog．Why does Mrs．Smith give it so much meat to eat today?”

　　Looking at the piece of paper, he found that there were not any words on it!

　　Most parents don’t think their children feel lonely．If parents attentively listen to kids talking about their feelings, they may be surprised to learn just how many kids feel lonely．

　　A seven-year-old girl, Christa, who when asked to draw a picture of disappointment, gives an image of a friend throwing snow in her face and says that, “True friends don’t do that．I’m going to find a new true friend．” The story shows a major cause of a childhood sense of loneliness－hope for friendship．

　　Children also feel lonely, and even disappointed at home．Kids may complain that, “Dad is frustrated and Mom yells a lot,” or, “My dad is on the computer all the time．Dad works too much．” The kids feel lonely in this environment of parents’ stress．

　　If a child does something wrong because of loneliness, punishment will make her more lonely．She needs to understand why her parents couldn’t give her enough attention at that particular moment and that she wasn’t the cause of their bad feelings．So parents had better not punish children who are feeling lonely and disappointed, but try to help their children and also themselves be relaxed and comfortable．

　　Truly, all parents need to pay more attention to how their actions impact their friends, daughter and sisters, but the most powerful way lies in giving children like Christa the tools to feel good about herself and know that she is worthy of true friends, caring parents, and loving sisters．In your children’s lives they will not be able to control others, but they can control how they feel about themselves．Self-confidence will bring “true friends” on the present-day playground and for the rest of their lives, which is a gift that will make kids’ biggest dreams come true．

　　Mother Teresa is a great woman．She spent her whole life helping the poorest of the poor．Today, she is respected around the world．

　　Mother Teresa was born on 26, August 1910．She grew up in the Serbian town of Skopje, which was a poor country at that time．Her whole family was Christians．When she was twelve years old, she expressed her wish to become a nun．As she wanted to be sure on her wish, she spent six years thinking about this decision．At last, she made up her mind and worked as a nun to help the poorest people in India．

　　After becoming Sister Teresa, she said that she received a message from God that God wanted her to go to live with the poor．Her work started．She took part in an organization which helped the poor, the sick, orphans and even the aids patients．Mother Teresa was not afraid of infection(传染)．She looked after the patients herself and loved them．

　　Her work was made known to the world．Some people supported her but some didn’t．She didn’t care．She continued her work．She gave love to all the poor in other parts of the world, not only in India．Although she was seriously ill, she never stopped helping the poor．Her work was recognized by the world when she was awarded the Nobel Prize in peace in 1997．She contributed all the money she received．

　　Mother Teresa died on 5, September 1997．Millions of people over the world were sad about the loss of this great woman who was a shining example of goodness and love all her life．

　　Sometimes the most difficult thing about feelings is sharing them with others．Sharing your feelings helps you when your feelings are good and when they aren’t so good．

　　Before you can share them with anyone, you have to figure out your feelings．When you’re trying to figure out your feelings, it might help to remember something that happened and think about how it made you feel．Then you can say, “I feel sad when my friend doesn’t play with me” or “I feel angry when my brother always wins at baseball．” This can help you figure out your own feelings．It also gives the person you’re talking with more information about what makes you angry．

　　It can be really hard not to tell anyone that you’re feeling sad, worried, or angry．If you keep feelings locked inside, it can even make you feel sick!

　　But if you talk with someone like your mom or dad, you will always start to feel better．Now you’re not all alone with your problems or worries．Your mom and dad want to know if you have problems because they love you．What if a kid doesn’t want to talk with mom or dad?Then find another trusted adult, like a relative or a counselor at school．

　　If you think you’ll have trouble saying what’s on your mind, write it down on a piece of paper．A kid doesn’t have to share every feeling he or she has, but it is important to share feelings when a kid needs help．You don’t have to solve every problem on your own．Sometimes you need help．Talking about your feelings can be the first step．

　　There was little rain in some place for two years and a lot of people died of hunger．So a man reported a famine(饥荒)to an official(官员)．The official asked, “How much wheat have you harvested?”

　　“Thirty percent of the normal yield(正常产量的30％),” the man replied．

　　“How much cotton?”

　　“Twenty percent．”

　　“How much rice?”

　　“Twenty percent．”

　　The official got mad, “You’ve already had seventy percent of the harvest, how dare(敢)you trump up(谎报)famine then?”

　　The man said, “I’ve never seen such a terrible famine in my life of a hundred and several scores of years．”

　　“How could you have lived so long?” asked the official．

　　Mr．King is a tall and strong man．He teaches P．E．in a middle school．He wears a long beard(胡子)and takes good of it．

　　It was Sunday yesterday．There was a big football match of the year on the playground in the centre of the city．Mr．King likes the game very much and of course he was going to watch it．With his friends’ help he got a ticket a few days ago．After breakfast he hurried to the bus stop, but a lot of people were waiting there．A bus came and he hardly got on．There were plenty of people in it and it was difficult for them to put their feet．He had to grip(抓住)a back of the chair．At the next stop a boy got on the bus．He was short and couldn’t grip anything．Suddenly the bus stopped and the boy hardly fell to the floor．He looked around and saw Mr．King’s beard and grip it．The man found it at once and called out, “Let go of(松开)my beard, boy!”

　　“Are you going to get off, sir?” asked to boy．
