　　Last summer, 15-year-old Bob had a problem．Like a lot of children．Bob was interested in doing many things．He liked dancing most and wanted to join a dancing group．But Bob’s high school didn’t have a boys’ dancing group but a girls’ group．He tried to join the girls’ group．And he made it．

　　Bob thought his problem was over after he had been one of the dancers in the dancing group．But a bigger problem was just beginning．The school didn’t allow Bob to stay in the girls’ group．“If we let Bob stay in the group,” the school said, “other boys will want to join．Soon, there won’t be any girls in the group．" They took Bob off the group．

　　Bob was very angry about it, so he went to a judge(法官)．The judge said it was not a right decision and told the school to let Bob go back to the dancing group．

　　Tom arrived at the bus station quite early for Paris bus．The bus for Paris would not leave until five to twelve．He saw a lot of people waiting in the station．Some were standing in line(排队)，others were walking around．There was a group of schoolgirls．Their teacher was trying to keep them in line．Tom looked around but there was no place for him to sit．

　　He walked into the station cafe．He looked up at the clock there．It was only twenty to twelve．He found a seat and sat down before a large mirror on the wall．Just then, Mike, one of Tom’s workmates came in and sat with Tom．

　　“What time is your bus?” asked Mike．

　　“There’s plenty of time yet,” answered Tom．

　　“Well, I’ll get you some more tea then,” said Mike．

　　They talked while drinking．Then Tom looked at the clock again．“Oh!It’s going backward!” he cried．“A few minutes ago it was twenty to twelve and now it’s half past eleven．”

　　“You’re looking at the clock in the mirror．” said Mike．Tom was so sad．The next bus was not to leave for another hour．Since then Tom has never liked mirrors．

　　We each have a memory．That’s why we can still remember things after a long time．Some people have very good memories and they can easily learn many things by heart, but some people can only remember things when they say or do them again and again．Many of the great men of the world have got surprising memories．

　　A good memory is a great help in learning a language．Everybody learns his mother language when he is a small child．He hears the sounds, remembers them and then he learns to speak．Some children are living with their parents in foreign countries．They can learn two languages as easily as one because they hear, remember and speak two languages every day．In school it is not so easy to learn a foreign language because the pupils have so little time for it, and they are busy with other subjects, too．

　　But your memory will become better and better when you do more and more exercises．

　　These days, more and more young people wish to be more beautiful, so they turn to plastic surgery for help．They spend thousands of yuan on these painful surgeries to fix their nose, to change their eyelids or to take off weight from their stomachs．

　　In fact, most people are not pleased with the way they look．Even the most beautiful actresses often wish they could change something about their looks．Should we live our whole lives believing we are ugly?Why can’t we raise our head high and believe that we are as beautiful as others?A smile is beautiful on any face, whether fat, oily or hairy．And a kind heart is much more beautiful than a pretty look．

　　No one knows why we sleep, but it’s certain that we need to．People who are prevented from sleeping begin to suffer obvious effects after a few days－they think less clearly, and they fall asleep during the working hours．

　　There are no rules about sleep．Generally speaking, grown-ups sleep about 7 and a half hours each night and probably more than 60 percent get between seven and eight hours．But perhaps eight percent are quite happy with 5 hours or less, and four percent or so find that they want ten hours or more．If you feel all right, you’re probably getting enough sleep．The important thing is not to worry how much other people get－their needs may be different．Exercise doesn’t seem to increase the need for sleep－office workers, for example, sleep for about as long as people doing physically active work．

　　Children sleep more than grown-ups－perhaps 14 to 18 hours soon after birth, going down to grown-up levels by early teenagers．Sleep patterns also tend to be different in the old people, who may sleep less at night than they did when younger, find sleep getting more broken, and often make it a rule to sleep during the daytime．

　　What will you be doing when you are 26 years old?Studying at university or working for a living?Take a look at what Albert Einstein was doing at the age of 26．

　　100 years ago．Einstein was working in Switzerland．His hobby was physics．Without much money or help, he wrote five papers for a physics magazine．Three of these greatly change the study of physics and our understanding of space, time, light and matter．His most famous work is on the Theory of Relativity．Einstein was given the Nobel Prize for his discoveries．Although he also did many other things later, the year 1905 was called Einstein’s “Year of Wonder”．It has been 100 years since then．Because of this, the UN has named 2005 the World Year of Physics．

　　Today, over fifty years after Einstein’s death, a question is asked, “Will there ever be another Einstein?It may take a long time．After all, Einstein was born more than 200 years after Sir Isaac Newton, another great scientist．Besides, physics is a different field now, and education is different, too．Even if you can’t be the next great scientist, it is still helpful to remember some of the things that made Einstein great．He thought independently and read widely．He left with us a formula for life：If A is a success in life, then A＝X＋Y＋Z．X is work; Y is play; and Z is keeping your mouth shut．

　　Fashions change as time goes．If you look at pictures of people or things from the past, you will feel that fashions have always changed．An English house of 1750 was different from one of 1650．A fashionable man in 1780 looked very different from his grandson in 1860．Today fashions change very quickly．We hear about things much more quickly than in the past．Newspapers, radios, telephones and television send information from one country to another in a few hours．

　　New fashions mean that people will buy new things, so you see there is money in fashion．

　　Mobile phone has become a problem for middle schools．Some middle schools in Australia have banned students from carrying mobile phones during school hours．

　　Mobile phone use among children has become a problem for the school this year．Several children have got mobile phones as Christmas gifts, and more students will want them．

　　Mary Bluest, an official, said mobile phone use is a distraction(分心的事)to students during school hours and it also gives teachers so much trouble in their classrooms．Teachers were also saying that sometimes students might use phone messages to cheat during exams．

　　She said some schools had tried to ban mobile phones．Some parents felt unhappy because they couldn’t get in touch with their children．

　　Are you a TV lover?Can you imagine living without TV?Well, you could give it a try．

　　A group of Americans, TV-Turnoff Network, have an idea．From April 19 to 25, they are asking children all over the world to turn off their TVs for one week．They hope children will find more interesting things to do．Maybe they can read some books, or learn to swim, or paint a picture．Since 1995, about 24 million people in the US have taken part in TV-Turnoff Network days, watching TV too much can bring big problems to schools, health and families．They want kids to watch less TV．What do you think?

　　Studies show that when children watch too much TV, they eat more unhealthy food．More children are getting overweight．Overweight children become ill more easily．Watching TV too much is also bad for their eyes．

Bad for family life

　　About 40％ of American families watch TV at dinner time．That means that they don’t talk very much when they eat together．

Also, too many violent things

　　An American study says that before a child turns 18 years old, he or she will see 200,000 violent things on TV．Some kids become violent in real life．
