We use the Internet for many things: business, shopping, writing letters, talking to people, finding information and so on. In recent years, a new kind of English has grown on the Internet. There's no real word for it yet, so we'll call it e-talk.

People don't like typing too much. To save time, they turn phrases into a few letters (called acronyms). Acronyms are often used in chat rooms(聊天室). Some of them are:

BTW (by the way)

BRB (be right back)

LOL (laughing out loud)

IMO (in my opinion)

People also use many abbreviations. They are shortened forms of words. Some common abbreviations are:

info (information)

puter (computer)

pic (picture)

sec (second)

We usually don't see people when we communicate(交流)on the Net, so people have new ways to show feelings. Most people use their keyboards to drawfeelings, such as:

:-) (happy)

;-) (joking)

:-( (sad)

:-O (surprised)

These days, many forums(论坛)have picture feelings. For example:

There are even whole new words, like newbies (someone who is new on a chat board or forum). When you write something bad about someone else, it's called flaming the person.

It takes time for people to get used to(适应)e-talk. Also, different groups on the Net have their own special ways of communicating. Newbies sometimes have to ask other people what they mean. As the Internet grows, e-talk will continue to grow and change.

(1)Why do people type acronyms?

[ ]

ATo show their feelings.

BTo make jokes.

CBecause people can type them quickly.

DIn this way newbies won't understand them.

(2)What does BTW, my puter is not working well. :-( mean?

[ ]

AThe person is happy about getting a new computer.

BThe person has to go away from their computer.

CThe person is angry at somebody.

DThe person is sad that his computer is having problems.

(3)If someone is angry, what may he type?

[ ]

A

B

CLOL.

DBRB.

(4)E-talk will probably ______

[ ]

Akeep changing

Bstay the same

Cbe used by people on the telephone

Dbe easy for newbies to understand

(5)The best title for this passage is ______.

[ ]

AE-talk

BPicture Feelings

Probably you have seen photographs of the Grand Canyon(大峡谷), the great valley in the desert country of Arizona(亚利桑那州). But you must go there yourself to feel its true size and beauty. The Grand Canyon is one of the greatest natural wonders of the world.

The Colorado River formed the Grand Canyon over millions of years. Slowly, the river cut down through hard rocks. At the same time, the land was rising. Today, the canyon is one and a half kilometers deep and 445 kilometers long. The oldest rocks at the bottom of the canyon are more than one billion years old. The width varies(变化)from about 200 meters to 29 kilometers across. The rim or top of the canyon is about 2 300 meters above sea level on the South Rim, and about 3 000 meters on the other side, the North Rim. As a result, there are different kinds of plants and animals on opposite sides of the canyon. The South Rim is a dry desert country. The North Rim has tall forest.

The canyon looks different at different times of day, and in different seasons and weather, At sunrise and sunset, the red, gold, brown and orange colors of the rocks are especially clear and bright. In winter, the canyon is partly covered with snow.

The view from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon is the best. Most visitors come to the South Rim and stay in campgrounds or hotels. Every point along the canyon's edge offers a different view.

The North Rim of the canyon is quieter. It takes all day to drive there from the South Rim because there is only one bridge across the Colorado River. On the way, you go through Navaho Indian land, and a colorful pink desert calledThe Painted Desert.

You can walk down into the Grand Canyon, or you can take a boat trip down the Colorado River, and camp on the beaches at night. But whether you see the Grand Canyon from the top or the bottom, or from the North Rim or South Rim, it will be an experience that you will never forget.

I used to dream about Pisa when I was a boy. I read about the famous building called the Leaning Tower of Pisa(比萨斜塔). But when I read the word Pisa, I was thinking of pizza. I thought this tower was a place to buy pizza. It must be the best pizza in the world, I thought.

Many years later I finally saw the Leaning Tower. I knew then it was Pisa and not pizza. But there was still something special about it for me. The tower got its name because it really does lean to one side. Some people want to try to fix(整修)it. They are afraid it may fall over and they do not like the way it looks.

I do not think it's a good idea to try to fix it. The tower probably will not fall down. It is 600 years old. Why should anything happen to it now? And, if you ask me, I like the way it looks. I like the way it leans over the city. To me it is a very human kind of leaning. Nothing is perfect(完美), it seems to say.

And who cares? Why do people want things to be perfect? Imperfect things may be more interesting. Let's take the tower in Pisa. Why is it so famous? There are many other older, more beautiful towers in Italy. But Pisa tower is the most famous. People come from all over the world to see it.

Both Jenny and I are well I don’t know if I told you, in the last e-mail, that Jenny is now working in a hotel.Although she has to work hard, people there are nice and she is enjoying the work.

You may know that more people drink coffee than tea around the world. And that, after oil, it is the second biggest traded commodity(商品).You may also know that the drink comes from beans which are first roasted and then ground. But what else do you know about this popular drink?

It is said that the story of coffee started with an Ethiopian goatherd named Kaldi. One day Kaldi was surprised to see that his goats were behaving very strangely.Instead of grazing(吃草)quietly, they were jumping around, almost dancing. He also noticed some red “cherries” from a plant that the goats were eating. He tried some himself and was surprised by the feeling of extreme happiness and excitement. He felt like dancing too!

But it wasn’t used as a drink at first-it was used as food. The coffee berries, mixed with animal fat, were used by monks to stay awake during long hours of prayer. From Ethiopia, coffee was later cultivated in Yemen and the first hot drink was developed there around AD 1000.Three centuries later Muslims were keen coffee drinkers and as Islam spread, so did coffee.Coffee houses appeared in Cairo and Mecca.

For hundreds of years the plants were protected safely. But some beans were smuggled(偷运)out of Arabia and taken to India. In the 17th century, coffee was soon grown in a new continent. From India to Indonesia, a century later the beans were once again smuggled to Brazil.Brazil is now the largest coffee producer in the world.

It was the caffeine(咖啡因)that made the goats dance and kept the monks awake.Although it is found in other soft drinks and tea, coffee has the most caffeine. In the short term, a couple of cups of coffee can prevent fatigue and delay sleep. But several cups a day, every day, can cause anxiety and restlessness.

Oil

C.

Tea

(2)

Why did the goatherd want to dance?

[ ]
