阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。

While carrying your schoolbag on the way to school or home, does the heavy weight of your books make you less interested to learn knowledge? Don't worry. E-readers may help you say goodbye to your heavy schoolbag.

An e-reader has the memory space to hold hundreds of books. So people want to replace heavy schoolbags with small, light e-readers. For example, Cushing Academy, a high school in Massachusetts, US, got rid of most of the 20,000 books in its library last summer. The head of the library said that the school was going to replace printed books with e-books. Teachers and students will use e-readers instead.

Most e-readers are thin and weigh less than 500g. They can download an e-book in 60 seconds. “It’s so convenient. You can have so many books right at your fingertips!” said Meghan Chenausky, 16.

Chinese schoolchildren are also trying e-readers. At the 2010 Shanghai Expo, an e-schoolbag was on show. It is a special e-reader that students can use to download textbooks from the school servers. It can also send and receive homework.

Some schools in Beijing and Shanghai have tried this e-schoolbag for a few years. “It’s excellent. I don’t have to carry a heavy schoolbag anymore,” said Xiao Qi, 15, Beijing. “And it’s eco-friendly because it saves paper.”

New generation e-readers have many functions(功能) besides reading, such as Wi-Fi and multimedia. However, some parents worry that these functions may have a bad influence on their children’s study habits. “I think Wi-Fi is not necessary for kids,” says Zeng Wenwen, 43, Beijing.

1. What may help you say goodbye to your heavy schoolbag?

2. What are most e-readers like?

3. What can the students use the special e-reader to do?

4. Why does the student Xiao Qi think the e-schoolbag is excellent?

5. What does the writer mainly want to tell us?

Jim Brozina is a single father. When his older daughter Kathy was in the fourth grade, he always read to her at bedtime.____1___. He didn’t want this happen with his younger daughter, Kristen. If you bought some candy months ago but never ate it, how can you tell whether it’s still eatable? The easiest way is to check the “expiration date (保质期)” printed on the wrapper. If that date has already passed, you’re likely to throw the candy away. But is that really necessary?

According to a new report from the US Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), tons of food is wasted each year, largely because people don’t fully understand what expiration dates, or “use-by dates”, actually mean.

Food dating was introduced in 1970s because customers wanted more information about the things that they were eating. When they first showed up, use-by dates only showed freshness because producers wanted their products to be tasted in their best conditions.

However, most customers mistakenly believed that use-by dates showed how safe the food was, and they still largely do. But the truth is that these dates aren’t related to the danger of food poisoning(中毒), according to Time News. Eggs, for example, can still be eaten three to five weeks after being bought, even though the use-by date is much earlier. When their use-by dates pass, strawberry-flavored cookies may lose their crunch(松脆的口感), but they are not harmful.

“It’s an unclear subject, the difference between food quality(质量) and food safety,” said Jena Roberts, vice president of National Food Lab, a US food testing company. “Even in the food industry has workmates who are not sure about it.”

This is why scientists are calling for a standard explanation to be printed following the use-by dates. “We want this to be clearly communicated so customers are not misinterpreting the information and wasting a lot of food,” said Dana Gunders, a staff scientist with the NRDC.

But this won’t be a mistake that is easy to correct since people have believed it for so long. Another problem is that the quality levels of different foods change differently-some are still eatable long after their use-by date while others are not.

As a result, food industry officials are now thinking of changing the use-by date to a date showing when food is most likely to throw away.

1. What does the writer mainly want to tell us in Paragraph 1?

A. When we throw the food away.     C. How we check the expiration date.

C. How we know if the food is eatable.  D. Whether we have to throw the food.

2. The underlined word “misinterpreting” probably means_________.

      A. paying attention to       B. taking no notice of

      C. making guesses about    D. having a wrong idea about

3. What can we learn from the passage?

   A. Most customers have a clear idea of what expiration dates mean.

   B. Most customers now care more about freshness than food safety.

   C. Even after their expiration dates pass, some foods are still safe to eat.

   D. “Expiration dates” were first used to show when food was likely to go bad.

 4. What is probably the best title for this passage?

A. Customers and food.

B. Food quality and freshness.

C. Use-by-dates and quality levels.

D. Expiration dates and food safety.

Happiness is a feeling that lights up your eyes, makes your steps light and makes you want to sing for no reason. Everyone wants to be happy. But sometimes, a guest comes in without invitation. It’s unhappiness. Don’t let it get you down. Send it away!
When you are happy, the world feels like a better place. As the saying goes: When you smile, the world smiles with you; when you cry, you cry alone. Wearing a smile will make you more charming and help you to win lots of friends. A good mood always gives you hope, which makes trouble and problems easier to handle.
No matter how happy you are, it’s normal to feel angry, sad or gloomy once in a while. Life is full of ups and downs. We can’t change the way life is, but we can do our best to change a bad situation into a good one. To help us do this, it’s good to know some of the factors (因素) that influence happiness.
One of the biggest factors is social relationships. People who are close to family and friends are happier than people who don’t have those relationships. Talking and sharing is a good way to relax and build confidence. Knowing someone is there for you will make you braver and more outgoing.
Another factor is work or school. If you enjoy school, even if you have lots of homework or extra classes, you will still feel that your school life is meaningful and happy. But if you hate school, your negative attitude may cause you to feel bored and upset that you have to do so much work.
A third factor is your attitude towards life. How do you feel if you fail in an exam? Maybe you think it’s unfair because you always study hard and should get a good mark. You can't stop blaming(责备) yourself. Or, maybe you accept it. You go through the paper carefully, find out why you made stupid mistakes, and tell yourself, "Take it easy! I’ll do better next time!" Your attitude makes a big difference.

Do you smile a lot or wear a long face most of the time?

1. What can we know from Paragraph 3?

A. We often change bad situations in life.

B. We often go upstairs and downstairs in life.

C. We have both happy and sad moments in life.

D. We spend neither happy nor angry time in life.

2. The writer probably agrees that _______________.

A. we can’t be happy if we are busy with our studies

B. we should accept our failure and try to do better next time

C. we should keep blaming ourselves when we fail in an exam

D. we will feel less happy when we are closer to people around us

3. What is the passage mainly about?

A. How to control our bad feeling.  B. What factors make our life easy.

C. What factors influence happiness. D. How to make our own happiness.

Alma, our lovely dog, isn’t with us any more. She died several years ago. But while sharing our home, she brought such joy and love that we still miss her.
It was an autumn day in Minnesota, US. We were hit by a big snow fall for which no one was prepared.
We have two apple trees in our backyard. Alma loved apples. When she went outside, she’d hold an apple and take it into the house to save for eating later. The apples had been on the ground and were often dirty. So I wasn’t always happy that Alma had brought them into the house. Feeling my displeasure, she would turn her head so I wouldn’t see her hidden treasure. It was our little game.
One day it snowed too early in the season, and Alma went outside and I noticed that she was madly digging holes and bringing the apples to the surface so they could be seen above the snow. She seemed busy digging up as many apples as possible during her yard time.
When I called her back into the house, she had her usual one apple in her mouth. About five minutes later, I looked outside. The yard was full of birds. Alma had dug up all those apples for her bird friends to eat. She knew that they didn’t have enough food to live through such an early winter. As I saw this, tears filled my eyes. Alma knew how to serve life with such kindness.

1. There was a big snow fall in Minnesota, US _______.

A.in spring  B.in summer  C.in autumn   D.in winter

2. Alma dug up the apples in the snow because________.

B.she liked digging holes and eating apples

C.she wanted to save more apples for eating later

Where to eat

There are a number of different places to eat in the shopping center.

The Noodle House is small, but very popular. The noodle soup tastes very good, and the fried noodles with roast pork are delicious. Everything is clean and the staffs are friendly. Prices are good too, but you may have to wait quite a long time as the restaurant is so busy.

Roma is a new restaurant. It is very smart, but the pizzas here do not taste good. We didn’t eat our fish as it smelled bad. The waiters looked angry and we thought it was very expensive. This restaurant has to improve.

The Tokyo Restaurant has been here for many years, and the staffs bow to customers when they enter and are very kind. The fish is very fresh and most of the food is delicious. The amount of food you get is quite small, but it always looks nice on the plate.

The Golden Dragon is a large Chinese restaurant. It has a lot of different food. The sweet and sour pork is excellent, the Beijing Duck is famous, and the winter melon soup is good. Go there for a really good meal, but expect to pay a lot. Prices are high.

The Come in Coffee Shop is very modern. There are many sorts of coffee and  if you like sweet things, wait until you taste their cakes and cookies! You can also have sandwiches-I enjoyed the egg sandwiches a lot. They have modern music playing, but it is very noisy, so it is quite difficult to have a conversation.

1. How many places can you eat in the shopping center?

     A. 2   B. 3   C. 4   D. 5

2. Where can you eat Beijing Duck?

   A. At The Noodle House.     B. At Roma.

C. At The Tokyo Restaurant.  D. At The Golden Dragon.
