A small boy at a summer camp received a bag of cookies in the mail from his mother. He ate a few, and then put the rest under his bed. The next day, after lunch, he went to his tent to get a cookie. The box was gone. That afternoon a camp leader saw another boy sitting behind a tree. He was eating the stolen cookies! "That young man," he said to himself, "must be taught not to steal (偷)."He returned to the group and found the boy whose cookies had been stolen. "Billy," he said, "I know who stole your cookies. Will you help me teach him a lesson?" "Well, yes. But aren't you going to punish him?" asked the puzzled boy.

"No, that would only make him hate you," the leader explained. "I want you to call your mother. Ask her to send you another box of cookies." The boy did as the leader asked. A few days later, he received another box of cookies in the mail.

"Now" said the leader, "the boy who stole your cookies is down by the lake. Go down there. Share your cookies with him."

In many cultures white often means something positive (禾只极).A white-collar job, for example, is the kind of job many people look for, working with your brain and not your hands.

White represents purity. That is why doctors and nurses usually wear white uniforms. Women wear white on their wedding day. Sometimes white is used in expressions that are not good, like "whitewash". At first, "whitewash" meant to paint something with white paint to make it look better. However, it means something different today: to hide or to cover up mistakes or failures. A "white elephant" is another example. In ancient Thailand, a white elephant was regarded as a sacred (神圣的)animal, but it was very expensive to keep. The kings of those days gave a white elephant to the people they wanted to ruin (毁掉).Once they received this holy, royal animal as a gift, they were not allowed to sell or kill it. Today, a "white elephant" means something that is big, useless and unwanted. In America, when people want to get rid of (丢弃)their furniture or clothes, they often have a "white elephant sale".

I don’t often lose things and I’m always careful with money, so I was quite surprised when I searched for my wallet and it wasn’t there. At first, I thought it was possible that I could have left it at home. Then I remembered taking it out to pay the taxi, so I knew I had it with me just before I walked into the restaurant. I wondered if it was possible that it could have dropped out of my pocket while I was eating dinner. I turned and walked back to the table where I had been sitting. Unluckily, there were several people sitting at the table at that time, so I had the waiter go over to the table to see if my wallet was on the floor. While the waiter was looking for it, the head of the restaurant came up to me and asked me if anything was wrong. I told him what had happened. He asked me to report the missing wallet to the police. I told him I didn’t want to do so, and I was in a hurry because I had to reach my waiting room before two o’clock, where some people were waiting to see me.
