Do you have a QQ number? Many people like to chat online using QQ. In fact, QQ has changed a large
number of Chinese people's communication habits (交流习惯). Do you know who invented QQ? It was Ma
Huateng.  
    Ma Huateng was born in 1971 in Guangdong. When he was very small, he showed a great interest in
astronomy (天文学). However, he chose to major in (学习…专业) computer science when he entered
Shenzhen University in 1989. In his eyes, computer science was closer to everyday life compared to astronomy. He worked hard and became the best student in his class.
     Ma worked as a computer programmer in a company in Shenzhen for five years after he graduated in1993.
His job was not bad and he could make a lot of money every month. However, Ma left the company and
started his own in 1998. It was difficult at the beginning and he had to work hard every day. After he invented
QQ, his business got better and better. It is said that now there are at least two hundred million people using
QQ. It is a wonder that even he himself never predicted (预测).

     Qu yuan, an official and a famous poet lived about 2,000 years ago. As a kind, wise and patriotic
(爱国的) man, he was loved by the common people (百姓). 1.

quickly in order to save his life. 2.             In the Chinese culture, dragon means power and authority
(权威), so fishermen used dragon boats to scare the fish away from Qu's body. They also threw Zong Zi,
or rice dumplings, into the water to feed the fish. 3.            But they were too late. Qu Yuan died. 
     From then on, people hold Dragon Boat (龙舟) races, eat Zong Zi on the anniversary (纪念日) of
Qu Yuan's death: the fifth day of the fifth lunar (农历的) month. 4.

     AMPAS, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences（美国电 影艺术和科学学院）, presents the 
Oscars each year. About 6 000 people who work in the movie industry belong to the organization. It was 
established in 1927 to support the film industry. The Academy began presenting awards（颁发奖项）in 1929. 
At that time, films were just starting to have sound.
    The awards were not called Oscar until much later. In 1951, a  woman who worked in the Academy library 
said the statue (塑像) looked like a family member - her uncle Oscar. A reporter heard of this story and wrote 
about it. Some people said the reporter and the librarian named the statue Oscar.        
    Each year, the American film industry will honor some of its best.  The steps of choosing award winners 
begin with members of AMPAS. These people work in 13 different professions. The members choose among 
people doing the same kind of work they do as candidates (候选人) for Academy Awards.  All Academy 
members choose the final winners among those candidates.      
   The awards are presented every spring. Important people in the movie industry,such as famous actors and 
actresses, attend the ceremonies (仪式).  Crowds of people wait outside the theater to watch the famous 
movie stars as they arrive for the ceremony. Camera lights flash.  Actors and actresses smile for the 
photographers and television cameras.      
    During the ceremony, famous actors and actresses announce the names of the winners. Then the winners 
walk up onto the stage to receive their Oscars. Their big moment has arrived. They cry. They laugh. They 
thank all the people who helped them win the award. These winners will go home with a golden Oscar.

    The customs in different countries are rather different. If I have dinner with a Chinese host, he always
puts more food onto my plates as soon as I have emptied it. That often discomforts me greatly. I have to
eat the food even if I don't want to, because it is considered bad manners in the West to leave one's food
on the plate. I have already noticed that when a Chinese sits at an American's dinner party, he very often
refuses the offer of food or drink though he is in fact still hungry or thirsty. This might be good manners
