Snub-nosed monkeys are a group of Old World monkeys. They mainly live in Southwest China(especially Sichuan,Hubei,Yunnan, and Guizhou) and Vietnam. They get the name from the very short nose on their round face. Many Chinese people call them “golden hair monkeys ” because some of them have golden yellow hair. They grow to 51 to 83 cm tall with a tail of 55 to 97 cm long.

Snub-nosed monkeys live in mountain forests up to 4,000 meters high. They spend most of their time in the trees. They live together in groups from 5 〜10 up to 600 members. One group don't want members of other groups come into their area. If any strange monkeys come up,they will shout at them. Sometimes the whole group will shout at the strangers with one voice.

The food of these animals mainly includes tree leaves, young bamboos and wild fruits. At birth,a baby monkey’s hair is black. When it is young,it hardly leaves its mother, and is often carried here and there by its mother. Young monkeys become adult ones in about six to seven years. People still don't know how many years they can live up to. These animals like to look for food and play together, and take care of each other. In face of danger the young ones are usually protected by being put at the center of the group while the stronger adults go to the scene of the alarm. They have thick hair and often sleep close together to keep them warm in freezing weather. They often sleep in the lower places of the trees where it is less windy and cold.

Snub-nosed monkeys are highly endangered because their living area is becoming smaller and smaller and their food is becoming less and less. They are the finst class (一级) national protected animals. China has already set up many protection areas to protect these lovely animals.

                             A

Mountains are usually not so good places for people to live in,mainly because the weather in high mountains are worse than that in lower lands. In the mountains there is less ground to grow plants, and plant growing is not often successful because of the bad weather. Fewer people live in mountains above 2,500 meters. The higher a mountain rises, the less air there island it is more difficult for people to breath. If a mountain is higher than 8,000 meters, like Qomolangma, there is not enough air to support human life. This is known as the“death zone (死亡区域) ”.

As we all know that most of the world’s rivers are fed from the snow and rain water of the mountains. More than half of the people in the world depend on mountains for water. Mountains are also rich in minerals (矿产) ,which are important for people there to make a living. More recently,a lot of national parks and ski fields (滑雪场) are built in mountain areas. A lot more people go to the mountains to spend their holidays during the hot weather, because it is much cooler in the mountains. So mountain tourism (方游业) are developing very fast.

Mountain climbing as a sport has a history of more than 150 years. It first became popular in England and soon all over the world.
