Many people are so busy these days that they have no time to cook at home. This becomes a problem
because most families love home cooking! The food tastes good and a family meal can bring everyone
together. In some families, meals are often the only chance everyone gets to see each other at the same time
during the day.
Another reason people enjoy home cooking is that it is a way of showing love. A parent who makes some
cookies is not just satisfying a child's sweet tooth. He or she is sending a message (信息). The message says,
"I care about you enough to spend an hour making cookies that you will eat up in 15 minutes if I let you."
There is also something about the smell of home cooking. The smell of cooking makes people happy. It makes
most of us feel good and loved--even if we're the ones doing the cooking! Next time you smell a cake making,
stop for a moment and pay attention to your mood (心情,心境).
1. Why do many people have no time to cook?
A. Because they haven't many things to do.
B. Because many people are too busy.
C. Because people don't like home cooking.
D. Because they are too tired to cook.
2. Home cooking is _______.
A. good and warm
B. a way of showing love
C. satisfying a child's tooth
D. Both A and B
3. The writer thinks the smell of home cooking _______.
A. makes us feel good and loved
B. makes us be interested in cooking
C. makes us excited
D. makes us love others
4. What's the main idea of the passage?
A. Home cooking is important.
B. Home cooking feels good and loved.
C. People are too busy to cook.
D. Home cooking cookies taste better.

Like most English children, I learned foreign languages at school. When I made my first visit to the
United States, I was sure I could have a nice and easy holiday without any language problem. But how
wrong I was!
At the American airport, I was looking for a public telephone to tell my friend Danny that I had arrived.
An American asked if he could help me. "Yes," I said, "I want to give my friend a ring."
"Well, that's nice. Are you getting married?" he asked. "No," I replied, "I just want to tell him I have
arrived." "Oh," he said, "there is a phone downstairs on the first floor." "But we're on the first floor now,"
I said.
"Well, I don't know what you are talking about Maybe you aren't feeling too well after your journey,"
he said."Just go and wash up, and you will feel a lot better." And he went off, leaving me wondering where
on earth I was: At home we wash up after a meal to get the cups and plates clean. How can I wash up at an
airport?
At last we did meet. Danny explained the misunderstanding: Americans say "to give someone a call", but
we English say "to give somebody a ring". When we say "to wash your hands", they say "to wash up". And

                                                   Riding the Trans-Siberian Railway
Last summer, after completing our work in China, I took a trip of a lifetime on the Trans-Siberian
Railway. Leaving Beijing early on a Wednesday morning in July, my wife and I traveled through some
awesome (令人惊叹的) countryside before we arrived in Moscow the following Monday.
The first leg took us past the Great Wall and through the grasslands of Inner Mongolia. At the Mongolian
Republic border, we had a delay (耽误) while the wheels were changed because the railway gauge is a
different size.
On our way to the capital, Ulan Baator (乌兰巴托), we saw herdsmen on horseback looking after
their cattle. There was a spectacular thunderstorm as we crossed a vast open plain. Later we had a quick
tour of Ulan Baator.
Next, the train took us into Siberia. After a stop at Irkutsk, a popular holiday resort (胜地), where a tour
group left the train, we passed a beautiful lake, the Lake Baikal. Later, we saw some lovely wooden houses
in pretty, sunny countryside. This surprised us, as we had imagined Siberia as being covered in thick snow.
Over the next few days, we passed through Novosibirsk, Omsk and other cities in the heartlands of the
Russian Federation. By now, our body clocks were losing their sense of time. We wanted to sleep and eat at
the wrong time!
At last we reached Moscow. We were too tired and slept for 16 hours that night. The next day we went
sightseeing. We saw the Kremlin and some other great buildings in the Russian capital. Then, all too soon, it
was time for us to return to our home in London.
