【题目】阅读理解

阅读短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

Some scientists say that animals in the ocean are increasingly threatened by noise caused by human beings. The noise that affects sea creatures comes from a number of human activities. It is caused mainly by industrial activities under the sea and ship engines. Such noises are added to natural sounds. These sounds include the breaking of ice fields, underwater earthquakes and sounds made by animals themselves.

Decibels (分贝) measured in water are different from those measured on land. A noise of one hundred and twenty decibels on land causes pain to human ears. In water, a decibel level of one hundred and ninety-five would have the same effect (效果).

Some scientists have suggested setting a noise limit of one hundred and twenty decibels in oceans. They have observed that noises at that level can frighten and confuse whales.

A team of American and Canadian scientists discovered that loud noises can seriously injure some animals. The research team found that powerful underwater explosions (爆炸) were causing whales in the area to lose their hearing. This seriously affected the whales’ ability to communicate and find their way. Some of the whales even died.

Many researchers whose work depends on ocean sounds object to a limit of one hundred and twenty decibels. They say such a limit would mean an end to important industrial and scientific research.

Scientists do not know how much and what kinds of noises are harmful to ocean animals. However, many scientists suspect that noise is a greater danger than they believed. They want to prevent noises from harming creatures in the ocean.

【1】 According to the passage, which of the following is increasingly dangerous to sea creatures?

A. The manmade noises.

B. The sound of earthquakes.

【2】 What is discussed in the second paragraph?

A. The ocean animals’ reaction to noises.

B. Human ears sensitive to all types of noises.

C. Different places with different types of noises.

D. The decibels measured differently on land and in the ocean.

【3】 What does the underlined phrase object to in Paragraph 5 probably mean?

A. Contribute to. B. Agree with. C. Be against. D. Put forward.

【4】 According to the passage, what will scientists most probably do in the future?

A. They will set a noise limit.

B. They will work hard to decrease noise.

C. They will study the effect of different noises.

D. They will protect animals from harmful noises.

【题目】阅读理解。

读短文,从每题所给的四个选项ABCD中,选出最佳选项。

A

On a stormy day last August, Tim heard some shouting. Looking out to the sea carefully, he saw a couple of kids in a rowboat were being pulled out to sea.

Two 12-year-old boys, Christian and Jack, rowed (划船) out a boat to search for a football. Once they’d rowed beyond the calm waters, a beach umbrella tied to the boat caught the wind and pulled the boat into open water. The boys were worried and tried to row back to shore. But they were no match for it and the boat was out of control.

Tim knew it would soon be swallowed by the waves.

Tim took off his clothes and jumped into the water. Every 500 yards or so, he raised his head to judge his progress. “At one point, I considered turning back,” he says. “I wondered if I was putting my life at risk. ” After 30 minutes of struggling, he was close enough to call to the boys, “Take down the umbrella! Let’s aim for the pier(码头),” Jack said. Tim turned the boat toward it. Soon, waves crashed over the boat, and it began to sink. “Can you guys swim?” he cried. “A little bit,” the boys said.

Once they were in the water, Tim decided it would be safer and faster for him to pull the boys toward the pier. Christian and Jack were wearing life jackets and floated on their backs. Tim swam toward land as water washed over the boys’ faces. “Are we almost there?” they asked again and again. “Yes,” Tim told them each time. After 30 minutes, they reached the pier.
