Dear Jim,

I am so exciting that you will come to China. I will free from December 18 and will have plenty of time to be together with you. I¡¯ll meet you at the airport and then you will take Bus No. 8 for my home. You worry about the weather here in your email. In a fact, the weather here is quite different from it in your city. It isn¡¯t very cold, so you needn¡¯t bring many clothes. During your stay here, I¡¯ll take you to some places of interests and you can taste some local food. I am sure we will have greatly fun together.

Looking forward to meet you soon.

John

A recent announcement by scientists that they have successfully cloned the first human embryo(ÅßÌ¥) has caused much debate and has shocked many people around the world. On the one hand, some scientists point out that if you clone an embryo, you can produce valuable tissues(×éÖ¯) and organs that could be used to save human lives. On the other hand, many people, including some scientists, disagree and fear that if mankind interferes with (¸ÉÉæ) nature in this way, they may be on their way to producing a real-life Frankenstein's monster.

Cloning is producing an exact copy of a plant or an animal using its cells. The first mammal to be cloned successfully from an adult cell was Dolly¡ªthe sheep. She was born in 1996 and died in early 2003, at a much younger age than normal. When she was born, many people were angry because they thought cloning would create more diseases in the animal world. However, in general the scientists were praised for their wonderful scientific breakthrough.

The Scottish scientist who created Dolly, Ian Wilmut, is shocked that some scientists are now considering cloning human beings. Although he researches cloning, he has never thought of creating copies of humans. Instead, he thinks the scientists should concentrate on creating new tissues and organs that could eventually be used to cure diseases like cancer. However, some people consider that cloning human embryos with the intention of destroying them shows no respect for human lives.

While cloning human embryos is illegal in many countries, some scientists are already pushing ahead with the research so as to deliver a cloned human baby. Severino Antinori, an Italian doctor, is one of the leaders in this field of research. He has declared that he wants to be the first to clone a human being.

In China, scientists have focused their efforts on cloning animals, as well as stem cells to be used in medical research. China has succeeded in producing clones of cows and goats, and continues to research ways in which cloning can benefit mankind.

¡¾1¡¿Which of the following statements about cloning is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Cloning technology can only be applied to animals.

B. A cloned animal can live longer than a normal one.

C. People all over the world are happy about the birth of Dolly.

D. Cloning can produce valuable tissues and organs to cure human diseases.

¡¾2¡¿The reasons why some people disagree with cloning include the following EXCEPT that .

A. cloning may produce a real-life Frankenstein's monster

B. cloning might create more diseases in the animal world

C. cloning human embryos shows no respect for human lives

D. cloning can't help those who want to clone their dead children

¡¾3¡¿Who is in favor of cloning human beings?

A. Ian Wilmut.

B. Severino Antinori.

C. The author.

D. The Chinese scientists.

Most people have heard of Shakespeare and probably know something of the plays that he wrote. However£¬not everybody knows much about the life of this remarkable man£¬except perhaps that he was born in the market town of Stratford upon Avon and that he married a woman called Anne Hathaway. We know nothing of his school life. We do not know£¬for example£¬how long it lasted£¬but we presume that he attended the local grammar school£¬where the principal subject taught was Latin.

Nothing certain is known for what he did between the time he left school and his departure for London. According to a local legend£¬he was beaten and even put in prison for stealing rabbits and deer from the estate of a neighboring landowner£¬Sir Thomas Lucy. It is said that because of this he was forced to run away from his native place. A different legend says that he was apprenticed to a Stratford butcher£¬but did not like the life and for this reason decided to leave Stratford.

Whatever caused him to leave the town of his birth£¬the world can be grateful that he did so. What is certain is that he set his foot on the road to fame when he arrived in London. It is said that at first he had no money or friends there£¬but that he earned a little by taking care of the horses of the gentlemen who attended the plays at the theatre. In_time£¬as he became familiar figure to the actors in the theatre£¬they stopped and spoke to him. They found his conversation so brilliant that finally he was invited to join their company.

¡¾1¡¿In the early life of Shakespeare£¬he________.

A£®attended a public school

B£®lived in London

¡¾2¡¿Why was he forced to leave his native place according to this passage?

A£®Because he did not want to go to school.

B£®Because he left for London to become famous.

C£®Because he had stolen deer and was beaten.

D£®No one knows for certain.

¡¾3¡¿Why can the world be grateful that he left his hometown?

A£®Because he wrote many world-famous plays after leaving his hometown.

B£®Because he became a good rider in London.

C£®Because he was an actor at last.

D£®Because he travelled all over the world.

¡¾4¡¿The underlined phrase ¡°In time¡± in Paragraph 3 means________.

Almost all of us heard the story "Here Comes the Wolf" when we are little kids. What we can learn from the story is we must be honest. Therefore, there're lots of case of dishonesty nowadays.

Being honest does great harm to other people or to yourself. Take the case of fake milk powder for an example. After drink this kind of milk, the babies had big heads while their legs and arms were still thin, what badly affected their health. To my great relief, the producers got punishing so that more serious consequences could be avoided.

Living in the city, people have certain widely acknowledging advantages. They enjoy various entertainments. Besides, there are many culture activities. Also, people in the city had access to better information service and educational facilities, and many problems exist. The overcrowded population, traffic jam and other issues may resulted in nervousness and diseases. As for the country life, the first feeling crowding our minds are peace and quiet. In the countryside, people live quiet life. They are exposed to less noises and pollution. The air in the countryside is a lot of fresher than that in the city. Of course, life in the countryside is not perfect, too.
