    13．THIS is an adapted excerpt（摘录）from Eman Mohammed's speech at TED （Technology，Entertainment and Design），a non-profit conference，in 2014．She is one of the few female photo journalists in the Gaza Strip（加沙地带）．
        When I was 19，I started my career as the first female photojournalist in the Gaza Strip，Palestine．My work as a woman photographer was considered a serious insult（侮辱）to local traditions．The male-dominated profession made me feel unwelcome by all possible means．They made it clear that a woman must not do a man's job．Photo agencies in Gaza refused to train me．
        Three of my colleagues went as far as to drive me to an open air strike area where explosions were the only thing I could hear．Dust was flying in the air，and the ground was shaking beneath me．I only realized we weren't there to document the event when the three of them got back into the armored（装甲的）Jeep and drove away，waving and laughing．Leaving me behind in the open air strike zone．
        For a moment，I felt terrified，humiliated，and sorry for myself…
        I started paying closer attention to women's lives in Gaza．Because I am a woman，I could go where my colleagues were forbidden to go．Beyond the obvious pain and struggle，there were healthy amounts of laugher and accomplishments．
        In front of a police compound in Gaza City during the first war in Gaza，an Israeli air raid（袭击）destroyed the compound and broke my nose．For a moment，all I saw was bright white．I thought I had either gone blind or I was in heaven．By the time I managed to open my eyes，I had documented this moment．
        Mohammed Khader is a Palestinian worker who spent two decades in Israel．As his retirement plan，he decided to build a four-floor house．By just the first field operation（军事行动）in his neighborhood，the house had been flattened．Nothing was left but the pigeons he raised and a bathtub．Mohammed put the bathtub on the top of the rubble（瓦砾）and started giving his kids a bobble bath every morning．
         My work is not meant to hide the scars of war，but to show the full unseen stories of Gazans．As a Palestinian female photographer，the journey of struggle，survival and everyday life has inspired me to overcome the community taboo（禁忌）and see a different side of war and its aftermath（灾祸）．I became a witness with a choice：to run away or stand still．

    10．There are moments in life when you're in the middle of some activity and think，"I love doing this．Love it!"Maybe it happens on the golf course，or camping，or when you're having dinner at a favorite restaurant．There are so many things to love about modern life．
        I'm in love with 35 miles per hour．
        It's a difficult kind of love to talk about in the present age of TV commercials and big-budget movies that constantly promote and glorify images of vehicles with roaring engines and smoking tires thundering across city streets in endless pursuit of adventure．
        My personality has never had a fast-and-crazy side．I vividly recall going to Disneyland as a young teenager and being emotionally thrashed on the Matterhorn roller coaster ride．Other kids were howling with delight at the sharp turns and steep drops while I was mentally repeating the phrases"Please be over soon"and"I don't want to die"．
       Do not，however，assume I spend most of my road time trembling behind the steering wheel．Freeway fright is not my partner．After 45-plus years on the road，I can handle a vast range of traffic hardships．I've had my share of rigid joints and sweaty palms but not one accident since a curving fender（挡泥板）incident in college．I go with the flow．
       But in private situations，alone on some suburban avenue or country lane，I like to ease off the gas pedal，settle in at a smooth 35 mph．
       It's a speed that allows me to appreciate my surroundings because the scenery doesn't flash by in a blur．There's also a significant safety factor because slowing down means I have more time to react and avoid holes，bouncing balls，wild animals，or other risks that may appear unexpectedly．
       This is my way of pushing back against the insistently increasing pace of our high-intensity，on-demand society．Think of it as a car drive on a trail．When you load up for a trip，you don't race across the countryside at a full dash．It's much nicer to wander along and find pleasure in the journey．

    7．I'm not an athlete，but I am a lover of the Olympics．My biggest sports moment ever didn't require me to be the fastest，the highest，or the strongest．It just required me to be in the right place at the right time，and catch the opportunity when it came to me．It was to carry our national flag for the Olympic Torch Relay．

        As a flag bearer，I was supposed to run out in front．Though the flag was fairly heavy，I picked it up and ran with it．I ran past rows of people．I ran through television cameras．It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life，being able to carry our national flag in an international event like thp Olympics．I was very proud of it．
        I had never been able to attend the Olympics，and I might never be important enough to carry an Olympic torch or anything like that，but I did get to carry  our national flag in the torch relay，although I will no longer have the opportunity to carry the flag in the Olympics，and that would be one sports experience that would be difficult to forget．

    Shortly he arrives at a checkpoint．Tanks sit by the side of the road，the sight of which sends a marked coldness through his backbone．A bunch of soldiers armed to the teeth stand by．A foreign soldier signals him to stop．He calms himself down and pulls over．During the past few days，nearly no civilian（平民） vehicles come out of the capital city，his car the only one on oads．

    "It won't take long．We'll soon give all of you in the capital the true freedom．"The soldier breathes a deep mouthful．He seems to have spotted the photo in the car，"The cigarette is not bad at all．Are those your wife and kids？I have two of my own，roughly the same age．"
    "Oh，yes，they are mine and they are constantly on my mind．They left the city a bit earlier，and I'm on my way to be reunited with them．Perhaps I'm never coming back．Driving a cab around during war times is too dangerous．I'm giving up the business．"He looks at the soldiers，still smiling．
    "After we overthrow your dictator（独裁者），you won't have that to worry about，you can come back and pick up your life again．"The soldier is leaning on the door of the car．It is perhaps the first time in many days that he has seen a happy face among the local people．It cheers him up．
    "Maybe，but I have to go to see my family．If you would pay us a visit，my wife will prepare a good meal for all of you．Come with me，this is going to be my last business run and I won't even charge you．"
    "Can't make it．We're on duty．Give our regards to your wife and kids．"The soldier is a bit excited，thinking maybe quite some locals have open arms for them after all．"Oh，yes，I almost forgot，the south is battle-infected，where IS your family？"
    Still smiling，he picks up the broken picture frame，presses a kiss on the photo，then turns around，staring into the eyes of that soldier，not quite himself from excitement，and the other foreign soldiers holding guns．Words drop out of his lips slowly but firmly：
    "Paradise．"
    Perhaps the last thing he sees is the confused，fearful，twisted expression on the face of that soldier，and the cigarette end dropping from his fingers．
