My childhood and adolescence were a joyous outpouring of energy, an endless pursuit for expression, skill, and experience. 1 was only a background to the great delight of lessons in music, dance, and dramatics.
Then one night at a high school dance, a remark, not intended for my 2, injured my youthful happiness: “That girl, what a pity she is blind.” Blind! A(n) 3 word that implied everything dark, blank and helpless. 4 I turned and called out, “Please don’t feel sorry for me, I’m having lots of fun.”5 the fun was not to last.
In college years, I began to struggle with the problem of earning a living. Part-time teaching of piano and occasional giving concerts proved only 6 sources of economic support. In terms of time and effort involved, the financial return was 7. Self-doubt and dark moods sparked within me. 8 to my misery was the repeated experience of knowing my sisters and friends dating excitedly. How 9 I was to my piano, 10 I could dissolve my frustration, accompanied by Chopin, Brahms, and Beethoven.
Then one day, I met a girl, an army nurse, whose faith was to change my life. As our acquaintance 11 into friendship, she sensed my 12. She said, “Stop knocking on closed doors. I know your opportunity will come. You’re trying too hard. Why don’t you relax? And have you ever tried 13?” The idea was strange to me. I had always believed that if you wanted 14, you had to go and get it for yourself. Yet, my sincerity and hard work had yielded poor returns, so I was 15 to try anything else. Self-consciously, I performed the daily practice of prayer. I said, “God, show me the 16 for which You sent me to this world.
In the years to follow, the answers began to arrive, satisfying 17 my most optimistic expectation. One of the answers was Enchanted Hills, where my 18 friend and I had the privilege of seeing blind children come alive in God’s out-of-doors. 19 are the sources of pleasure and comfort I have found in friendship, and most important of all, I 20 closer to God and, through Him, to immortality (永生).

“BANG!” the door caused a reverberation (回声).It was just standing there, with Father standing on one side, and I on the other side.

We were both in great anger.“Never set foot in this house again!” stormed Father. With tears welling up in my eyes, I rushed out of the flat and ran along the street.

The street lights were shining rather desolately(凄凉的).I wandered aimlessly.

A young father who held a child in his arms walked past me.I felt as if I saw my childhood from another space: happy and harmonious.

But now… I don’t know whether it is because I have grown up or because dad is getting old.We differ in our ways of thinking. He always imposes his opinions and codes of behavior on me.Whenever I do something wrong, he never admits it.We are just like two people coming from two different worlds. It feels like there is an iron door between us that can never be opened.

I wandered the streets, without a destination in mind.My heart was frozen on this hot summer night. As I walked on there were fewer and fewer people on the streets, until I had only the street lights to keep me company. When I finally reached the high-rise apartment block in which I lived, I saw that the light was still on.

In fact, it was nothing.Perhaps, dad was throwing away some of his old stamps.Perhaps he thought they were useless.I never had the courage to tell him that I liked collecting stamps.I can’t stand his outrageous(蛮横的) words: “ I can throw you away, let alone these old papers.”

All the lights were off except father’s.

Dad was always like this.Maybe he didn’t know how to express himself. After shouting at me, he never showed any mercy or any moments of regret. After an argument he has the habit of creeping up in my sleep and then tucking me underneath the covers.

This was how he always was.He has been a leader for so long that telling everyone else what to do has become his second nature.

The light was still on.“Am I wrong?” I whispered, maybe… With the key in hand, I was as nervous as I had ever been.At last, I decided to open the door.As soon as I opened the door, tears ran down my cheeks.I suddenly realized that the iron door that I had imagined between us did not exist at all.Love – is second to none.

No matter how difficult the life was, she was always having a      attitude. She always had strength in the face of struggle and change. My mother was so      all those years during my childhood — she was my island in a sea of change. She is my hero.

科目:高中英语 来源:2011-2012学年浙江省高三第一学期第一次统练英语试题 题型:阅读理解

Last Sunday I made a visit to some new neighbors down the block. No specific purpose in mind, just an opportunity to sit at the kitchen table, have some tea and chat. As I did so, it occurred to me how rare the Sunday visit has become.

When I was a kid in the New Jersey of the 1960s, Sunday visits were routine. Most stores were closed and almost nobody worked. My family normally traveled eight city blocks to the home of my grandmother, where adults would sit on the front porch and chat while we children played hide-and-seek.

The Sunday visit was something to desire strongly. It was the repetition to church, our reward for and hour of devotion, and opportunity to take advantage of the fact that Dad was not at work, we were not in school, and there were no chores that couldn’t wait until Monday. Sunday was, indeed, which means that there was one day when everyone seemed to have time for everybody else.

Sunday as a day of rest is, or was, so deeply rooted in the culture that it’s surprising to consider that, in a short span of time, it has almost entirely lost this association. In my childhood, it was assumed that everyone would either be home or visit someone else’s home on Sunday. But now the question is, “What do you plan to Do this Sunday?” The answer can range from going to the mall to participating in a road to jetting to Montreal for lunch. If one were to respond, “I’m making a Sunday visit to family,” such and answer would feel strange, an echo from another era.

I suppose I should be grateful to live in Maine, a state of small towns, abundant land tight relationships. Even though folks work as hard here as they do anywhere else, the state’s powerfully rural cast(特质)still harbors at least remnants(剩余部分)of the ethic of yesterday’s America, where people had to depend on one another in the face of economic vagaries(反复无常的情况)and a challenging environment.

1.The writer’s general impression of the Sunday in the past was a day when_________.

A.everyone would pay a visit to some relative far away

B.everyone seemed to be free and could have some leisure

C.Dad was not at work while Mom was busy cleaning the house

D.nearly every adult would go to church and children were not at school

2.What can we learn from the underlined sentence in paragraph 4?

A.People nowadays prefer staying at home on Sunday

B.People in the city dislike being disturbed on Sunday

C.Such answers are rarely heard in our modern society

D.Visiting someone on Sunday might take a lot of time

3.From the last paragraph we may infer that people in Maine____________.

A.suffer more from economic depression and the changed environment

B.have abandoned their tradition and lived an absolute new life

C.have tense relationships with each other

D.always help each other when they are in need

4.What is the writer’s attitude towards the Sunday today?

A.Unsatisfied

B.confused

C.Respectful

D.Thankful
