A tourist bus wound its way into a mountain area. On the way, two passengers—a couple of young lovers—were very attracted by the beautiful scenery that they called on a stop to get off the bus. They were left behind and the bus went on. Suddenly, they heard a loud boom ahead of the road. There was a huge rock rolled down a hill that hit the bus and fell with it into a deep valley. The lovers were greatly shocked by the news that no passengers on board were survived. When they calmed down they sighed and expressed their feelings in a few words.

【题目】阅读理解。

There has been a dramatic increase in the number of natural disasters over the past few years, and it is assumed that global warming and climate change could cause even more disasters in the future. Some of the world’s leading cities are facing disasters like floods and heat waves.

London

Londons flood defences are getting older. Since 1982, the Thames Barrier(水闸)has protected the city from the threat of flooding, but it was only designed to last until 2030 and close once every two or three years. About 26 years later the barrier now closes five or six times a year and according to Environment Agency predictions, by 2050 the barrier will be closed on almost every tide if the problem is not addressed.

There are 26 underground stations, 400 schools, 16 hospitals, an airport and 80 billion worth of property in London’s flood risk area, so large scale flooding would be disastrous.

Paris

Over a six week period in July and August 2003, more than 1 1,400mainly elderly peopledied in France from dehydration(脱水)and extremely high body temperature in a deadly heat wave. Heat waves of similar intensity(强度)are expected every seven years by 2050, so what can be done to make sure such a disaster does not happen again?

One solution is to have air-conditioners installed in elderly care homes. But this is considered a short-term solution, as the increase in demand for electricity also increases carbon emissions(排放).

In Paris the local authorities are encouraging architects to design new types of buildings such as the building “Flower Tower,” which uses a covering of bamboo to act as a natural air-conditioner.

Shanghai

Shanghai is the fastest growing city on Earth. It has a population of 18 million and is only 4 meters above sea level. Sea levels are predicted to rise by 20 cm within the next century.

An estimated 250000 people move to Shanghai every year in search of work, placing extra demands on energy consumption. China relies heavily on coalfired power stations, but these emissions increase temperatures and, in turn, warmer seas increase the risk of typhoons.

【1】What problem should be settled now in London?

AHow to protect the citys property

BWhere to build its flood defences

CHow to use the Thames Barrier to protect the city

DHow to improve the function of the old flood defences

APutting up new types of buildings with a covering of bamboo

BHaving air-conditioners installed in elderly care homes

CForbidding the city to buildFlower Tower”

DEncouraging architects to design new types of buildings

【3】The major threats to Shanghai are

Aincreasing population and coal-fired power stations

Brising sea levels and typhoons

Cextremely high temperature and rising sea levels

Dextra demands on energy consumption and typhoons

【4】The purpose of the passage is

Bto give advice on how to defend natural disasters

【题目】The German company said 5,000 of the "Futurecraft 4D" shoes will be available at retail stores in the fall arid winter. As it is pressed for time,it still plans to start mass producing them next year and expects to have made more than 100,000 pairs by the end of 2018.The company would not disclose where the shoes will be manufactured.

Adidas cooperated with Silicon Valley-based start up Carbon to create the shoe, which uses a new technology called digital light synthesis(合成).

Although the common 3D printed materials are often rigid(僵硬的),the new materials are flexible with Silicon Valley-based start up Carbon's technology.

The technology works by using UV lasers to project a pattern for a midsole(鞋底夹层)liquid. It tums the liquid into a solid and the result is a flexible, but more durable midsole.

The technology could make the most of the time and money to produce the shoes in large quantities which may be loved by humans in the future.

【题目】Humans have daydreamed for thousands of years, and yet, these days, spare moments are filled with using our smartphones and other devices—going through social media, listening to podcasts, responding to emails—leaving us little time to let our minds wander.

1 When you’re in a daydreaming state of mind, you can imagine or pretend your own version of events.

My most creative moments come when my brain is allowed to rest says Megan King, a designer. But she is addicted to her smart phone. 2 According to Nielsen, Americans spend 10.5 hours a day consuming media. And UK residents are close behind at almost 10 hours a day, according to eMarketer.

3 This may seem a small change, but its effect, on the way our minds work and on our collective creativity could be serious. 4

Over years of studies, researchers have found that our brain has two separate attention systems — an external one and an internal one. The internal attention system, which is activated(激活)during daydreaming, is called the default network(默认网络).

The default network is particularly active when we are thinking about ourselves, thinking about the past, thinking about the future. 5

If both systems can’t be active at the same time and we’re spending 10 hours a day in one attention system, it begs the question: what is that doing to our brains — and our ability to come up with creative ideas?

A. Daydreaming is the opposite of our dreams.

B. This extended screen time has made some of us uncomfortable sitting alone with our own thoughts.

C. Daydreaming is how we access our big-picture state of mind.

D. In fact, it could be preventing your ability to come up with fresh, creative ideas.

E. We can’t really have both attention systems active at the same time.

F. People spend too much time on screen suffer from headaches.

G. She's not alone.
